  1. One of the biggest arguments against CERA and related debates is that catcher don't really tell the pitchers what to pitch, since they can always shake 'em off. While that's true to some extent, even guys not like Sale go with what the catcher calls more times than not. Keeping opposing batters guessing, off stride or distracted in some way is something impossible to measure with numbers. Pitch framing and blocking wild throws is just part of the whole CERA debate.... maybe a small part.
  2. Isn't it wonderful?
  3. The best way to use CERA is to look at the numbers with each pitcher one-by-one. That way, it takes way the fact that some pitchers have pretty much their own caddy-catcher. Pitch-framing is measure somewhere. I'm not sure where the numbers are, but I think Leon has been consistently plus in that area. I agree on the "feel for pitching" aspect of his game, something that cannot be measured by data. Pitcher just love pitching to him, and that can't be bad, can it?
  4. How about the NL Wild Card (and some division) race? 76-53 Cubs 73-57 ATL 72-58 AZ 73-58 STL (-4.0 NLC) 73-59 MIL (-4.5 NLC) -1.0 71-59 COL (-1.0 NLW) -2.0 70-60 PHI (-3.0 NLE) -2.5 70-61 LAD (-2.5 NLW)
  5. MLBTR reports.... As of Saturday, Red Sox pitchers had a 3.08 ERA when Sandy Leon was catching, compared to a 3.84 ERA with another catcher. Leon’s game-calling and defensive abilities have made him a favorite of the Sox rotation, Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald writes, and the team hasn’t lost a beat with Leon taking the bulk of playing time with Christian Vazquez on the DL. Mastrodonato’s piece also delves into Leon’s early development as a player, and how his quick grasp of English helped him easily learn how to work with pitchers
  6. Maybe it's good for the players to think long and hard about it.
  7. No. I'm not expecting he ever reaches the majors.
  8. Okay, then add to the list: Devers, Marco Hernandez, Vaz, Wright, Smith, Thornburg, Maddox and others.
  9. We've done very well vs many of the leagues best pitchers. Most teams, including the Yanks, struggle vs good pitching. It's natural. To me, it bugs me more when we lose to unknown pitchers than good ones like Snell. Yes, we will face better pitching once we reach the playoffs, but so will the Yanks, Stros, Guardians and A's. I'd hate to have to face Sale twice in a series. I'm glad we don't have to do so.
  10. Probably a lot, if the stadium is withing 30-40 minutes drive.
  11. 31 Dalbec (424 ABs) 20 Ockimey (380) 16 Campana (409) 14 Tendler (349) 14 de la Guerra (368) 11 Witte (352) 11 Olt (238) 10 Ohlman (232) 9 Chavis (152)
  12. The minor league Rule 5 draft pick leads Portland with 61 RBI, while his 14 home runs put him second. -soxprospects.com
  13. Day off, Sale and ERod returning soon, each OF'er got a day off from the turf in the Trop, I think we're primed for a nice winning stretch, again.
  14. It's like everyday these guys homer.
  15. I think there's something like 2 million people in the triangle area. That may be enough, since Carolinians love baseball. The Tampa metro is something like 3 million.
  16. He had a good month before going down hurt.
  17. He'll never be a plus fielder, but it's not hard to be as good as Devers is right now on D. I still look forward to Devers return and think he'll be a plus going forward.
  18. Why be surprised by a guy returning to who he is-- good or bad?
  19. NC must have about 15 minor league teams. They love baseball. A park near 40/540 could draw enough from Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill might work. I'm not sure Charlotte could draw enough by itself, and if you place the stadium on the way to Greensboro or the triangle, say Salisbury or Ashboro, you may not get enough people from Charlotte to make the trip. It's about 45 mins to Salsibury and 90 minutes to Ashboro... way too far. It;s about 90 minutes from Raleigh to Ashboro, making it a nice central location but too far from anywhere, except maybe Greensboro & Winston-Salem. Salisbury is about 45 minutes from Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Greensboro. That might be too far for both. Charlotte may be the best single location, but it's too far from other NC cities to get a sizable draw from elsewhere. I know many Sox fans travel from Maine, NH, VT and CT, so maybe it might work. Maybe place the park as far North East from Charlotte as possible so as to not lose many city fans.
  20. I'll still take Devers over Nunez/Holt at 3B, despite the fact that Nunez seems to be heating up a little bit.
  21. There were some penciling Eovaldi into the second slot of our playoff rotation with Price in the pen. It never ceases to amaze me how some posters continue to fall for the most recent short sample size buzz over and over and over, and then scratch their heads and wonder...
  22. Dream on... You guys suck vs weak teams. This will be a cake walk.
  23. North carolina probably could support a ML team, but the problem is where to put the team where a few cities would go to the games. I'm not sure just one NC city would be enough. I wonder about Indianapoli or Buffalo. Maybe San Antonio, San Jose or try Montreal again.
  24. I, for one, see many more flaws in traditional stats and trying to place value of league-wide rankings based solely on personal observations and a few flawed stats. Although I realize the flaws in WAR, I believe they are less than other methodologies I know about.
  25. I thought plays were ranked by difficulty and more points were awarded for making the more difficult plays, or is that just Inside Edge Fielding? Maybe I need to go back and study.
