  1. On Bogey's defense... He has looked pretty steady this year, but I'm not sure I'd say he is above average Lindor is excellent on defense. Numbers aren't everything, but here are some... UZR/150 (32 SSs with 500+ innings) 2. Lindor 13.3 14. Bogey 2.7 DRS 3. Lindor +14 T31 Bogey -16 2016-2018 (33 SSs with 1500+ innings) UZR/150 2. Lindor 11.7 19. Bogey -0.3 DRS 3. Lindor 36 33. Bogey -37 (32nd place is at -22)
  2. I don't believe in jinxes....knock on wood!
  3. I guess there's a chance Sevy and Tanaka get their act together and CC does his thing, but I doubt they all do, and I think you need all 3 to be on top of their game. I like our top 3-4 starts as much as anyone's, if not more. I like our offense more than anyone's. Our defense ranks #1 in UZR/150. I'm happy thinking they are a top 6 defensive team in MLB. Our team base running is pretty darn good. Our closer has struggled, but at least he's not on the DL or jail-worthy. Our pen has been shaky but still ranks pretty highly despite not having many big names besides Kimbrel. I am very high on Cora. I think we have less holes than anyone else, and our weakest links are still pretty darn good.
  4. He looked as good as I've ever seen in the one game back after the first DL (5 IP- 1 H- 0 ER- 12 Ks- 0 BB). I'm hopeful he will be super sharp again, but I think the Sox want to minimize any chance he gets hurt during the regular season. My guess is he starts 2-3 games brfore the playoffs start.
  5. The Guardians have 4 starters out of the top 12! The Astros have 4 in the top 17. The Red Sox have 4 in 30. The Yanks have 4 from #15 to #26. The A's have 3 from #11 to #20, but one is out hurt. We don't hear much talk about the Guardians. They have 4 top starters, Miller coming back from injury and two of the best hitters in MLB in Ramirez and Lindor. They also have 3 guys on pace for over 30 HRs and 95+ RBIs.
  6. A look at the AL Starting Pitcher ERA- rankings of the 5 contending teams: 1. Sale 44 3. Bauer 50 4. Kluber 62 5. Verlander 67 6. Clevinger 70 7. G Cole 70 9. Rodriguez 75 10. Morton 77 11. M Fiers 79 12. Carrasco 79 14. Price 81 15. Severina 82 16. Sabbathia 82 17. Keuchel 85 19. Manaea 86 20. Cahil 87 22. Tanaka 89 26. JA Happ 91 30. Porcello 94
  7. I wasn't trying to imply the 365 day sample size is better that the 2 year, 3 year, 2 month, 3 month sample sizes. I know Devers has struggled for a pretty long time. I'm just not one to put a ton of value on just relatively small and recent sample sizes. I like to look at several sample sizes together. If Devers hits poorly in September, I'll almost certainly change my mind. Sometimes some of the wildest, rawest and/or most undisciplined players are the ones that get to great pitchers who are wowing everyone else down. (Or not, something we haven't heard for a while.)
  8. I think his knee has not bothered him all year.
  9. I'm pretty sure college beats HS, but maybe the very best might be HS. Just my guess.
  10. I'd be a lot more flexible on that than on whether to start ERod or Eovaldi game 4.
  11. ERod does well vs the Yanks. (3.16 ERA) He's way better than Eovaldi. ERod is my 3rd starter ahead of Porcello, unless something major happens.
  12. Last year, I'd say it was the Devers HR vs the Yanks. This year, one moment? Maybe Beni's ground ball 10th inning single to finish the sweep of the Yanks after the Sox tied it in the 9th on an error.
  13. There have been some good 1st overall picks out of HS on this 30 year list: 2017 Royce Lewis 2016 Mickey Moniak 2014 Brady Aiken 2012 Carlos Correa 2008 Tim Beckham 2005 Justin Upton 2004 Matt Bush 2003 Delmon Young 2001 Joe Mauer 2000 Adrian Gonzalez 1999 Josh Hamilton 1993 Alex Rodriguez 1991 Brien Taylor 1990 Chipper Jones 1987 Ken Griffey Jr. College 2018 Casey Mize 2015 Dansby Swanson 2011 Gerrit Cole 2010 Bryce Harper 2009 S Strasburg 2007 David Price 2006 Luke Hochevar 2002 Bryan Bullington 1998 Pat Burrell 1997 Matt Anderson 1996 Kris Benson 1995 Darin Erstad 1994 Phil Nevin 1989 Ben McDonald 1988 Andy Benes
  14. We have no great bench base stealers on the 40 man roster. How about these numbers? They're all kind of close. Last 365 days: 1.049 Betts .861 Bogey .827 Beni .768 Moreland .727 Devers .702 Holt .678 Nunez .598 Vaz .576 Swihart .559 Leon I'm not just talking bottom of the 9th. I think Devers is a better hitter than Nunez and Holt. He went through a rough stretch before going on the DL; certainly, if he looks bad in September, I'll agree with your position, but I'm not one to think a player is only as good as his last month or two numbers say he is..
  15. Nunez has looked better on defense, of late, but he's not a major improvement on defense over Devers. I'd rather have Devers up to bat in the bottom of the ninth, especially if a home run is needed, over Nunez or Holt... assuming he doesn't hit .100 in September.
  16. I did, now. Pretty impressive. I concede.
  17. Is there ever really a "blue chip" HS player? Anytime you take a HS kid, it's a gamble. The Phillies took Mark Appel first that year. The Twins took Kohl Stewart 4th. Clint Frazier was 5th. I'm not sure there was anybody that screamed, "Take me!" by the 7th pick. Aaron Judge was taken 32nd, but I doubt anyone looked at him like a 7th pick.
  18. College Player of the Year is near meaningless. If it was what it was, he'd have gone first or second. It wasn't like Ball was not highly regarded, at the time. All-in-all, Ben's drafts were about average. His international signings grade as an A to A-, despite Castillo. His trades were pretty good (Dodger dump, ERod...) His FA signings were D-, at best.
  19. Except for Koji.
  20. I get that. Pom certainly helped us get to the dance last year, and that had value, despite us not winning a ring. Had he done what he did the first half of 2016 in the second half of 2016, we might have gone farther. He's been no help this year. One very good season, one half okay, and one horrible. I was kinda hoping for better, but with Espi's injury, the trade looks good for Boston. Espi still has a chance to change the hindsight argument.
  21. Would you trade Pom for Espi right now?
  22. Good pick with Beni, though.
  23. And Wright can be used as a pinch runner. I've seen him dive back to a base, unlike other pitchers. He's a warrior. How about a Pete Rose type barrel into the catcher at home plate?
  24. Thanks. JD, Betts, Bogey and Beni will play every inning of every game, unless they get hurt, or it's a blow-out. Moreland & Pearce are locked in at 1B (lefty-righty), although Pearce could move to OF in a pinch. Nunez & Devers will pretty much split time at 3B- maybe lefty-righty. Kinsler looks locked up at 2B. The only position I see a PH'er being needed- beside the 1B/3B platoons is catcher (maybe Kinsler at 2B).
  25. While true, his numbers are still better than Nunez and Holt-- as is.
