Like when, whoever does well the last week or two plays? This makes zero sense, to me. All good players go through slumps. If we benched every player who slumped, we'd have nobody left to play. We are going to go with the horses that got us here. Hopefully, Cora will get players rested or not rusty by game 1. I have confidence, despite our resent struggles on offense.

But, the gain we get on the other end of the catching spectrum is so fantastic, it makes no sense to give that up for a couple hundred OPS points, at most. Plus, the cost to improve our catching position will keep us from signing RP'ers.

Yes, he could be great for 5 more years. I get that. I did hear the same thing about Papelbon years ago, and nobody is crying about letting him walk. One could easily argue Kimbrel is already showing signs of decline, despite last season's great numbers. His career xFIP- is 2.15. He had a great 2017 with a 1.50 number, but he's been over 2.15 in 4 of his last 5 seasons. 2.24 2.46 3.48 1.50 3.00 He's had his 3 highest HR/9 rates of his career in the last 3 years, and it's getting worse: 0.68 0.78 1.03 This year's numbers could be a lot worse but for the .218 BAbip this year, when his career mark is .261. I'm not trying to predict an immediate or eventual decline, but there are signs it has already begun. It's not just age progression warning charts. Look, I'd love to have Kimbrel for 3-5 more years. It's just going to cost too much and the risk-reward is just too scary for my liking. Offer him the QO. Take the draft pick and then use the $20M plus $10M more to sign 3-4 solid RP'ers, including 1 or 2 with closing experience (maybe a Cody Allen type).

Because we are super tight with our budget, we have to spend wisely. We cannot fill every need area, unless Henry decides to radically depart from his history. I get the sense this $39.9M over the luxury tax thing is just a 1 or 2 year plan. Extending a multi year contract to Kimbrel pretty much forces us be $39M over for whatever his contract length is, or totally pack it in and accept the cliff. I suppose we could trade Kimbrel after 2019, but I doubt that is a plan. If Kimbrel bolts, we'll have enough money to sign multiple players, several of them would be solid RP'ers to shorter term deals. I think that is the way to go. I'm almost positive Kimbrel will get 4-6 years somewhere. He will likely get $18M+ per year. That's just way too much for team looking to keep the likes of Betts, JD, Sale, Bogey and others coming up to free agency as final arb years in the next 2-3 years. I firmly believe this is an either or situation, and I'd take Betts, JD, Sale or Bogey over Kimbrel every day of the week.

Again, why do people assume those players that are slumping will continue to do so? A player's recent week, 2 weeks or even 2 month sample size is not a good indicator of what is to come. Yes, it is part of the equation, but not the dominant one. You don't throw out great results from our staff just to try and gain a little bit of offense from the catcher position. I'm hopeful Moreland and Kinsler turn things around, but we do have Devers showing life, and Pearce hitting righties better than ever. We also have Nunez and Holt taking up some slack. I'm confident our offense will be fine. Maybe, I'm just being a homer, but our guys are getting some rest, and I think that should help.

I certainly understand the frustration with Vaz. I feel it, too. I'm hopeful this is just an off year (D & O), but if he keeps playing like this, his defense is not outweighing his poor offense. He either need to get back up over .700 or get his defensive act back together. Since he just signed the contract, I'm thinking we give him one more year. I'm also thinking Leon is going to remain Sale & Price's caddy for at least another season.

Yes, I thought it was assumed it was just my opinion. If Henry is willing to stay near or go over the max penalty line for several years in a row, then I'm fine with bringing Kimbrel back for 3-5 years. I will say, I think he's bound to decline starting pretty soon, but he is one of the best, for sure. To me, it's likely an either/or situation. If we bring back Kimbrel, it means we don't keep someone else or sign someone else. I realize this is all conjecture, but I would not want a large percent of our payroll budget going to a closer who is likely to begin declining in a year or two.

You and notin are probably right. I'd take Workman or Poyner over him, but I think Cora sticks with Kelly.

I can't see why he'd ever settle on 2 or even 3 years. This is his big payday. he's cashing in. Somewhere else is what is best for us.

I think the A's give us a better chance, especially when you figure they will have used a top SP'er and will have less rest and more travel before game 1. That being said, I'd like to beat up on the Yanks. -
In light of the fact that we will be using just 4 starters in the first round 5 game series and should have ERod or Eovaldi in the pen as a long reliever, here's a question I have for those who think we need 12 pitchers not 11 for the playoff roster: How often can we use these pitchers with this game schedule: 5 days off Game 1 Game 2 Day Off Game 3 Game 4 Day Off Game 5 Kimbrel ___ Brasier ___ Barnes ___ Kelly (or ?) ___ Workman ___ Eovaldi/ERod ___ Wright ___ My opinion: Kimbrel for 1 IP 4-5 games Brasier for 1 IP 4-5 games Barnes for 1 IP 3-4 games Kelly for 1 IP 3-4 games Workman 1 IP 3-4 games ERod/Eovaldi 2 IP x 3 gms or 3-4 IP x 2 gms Wright 2 IP x 3 gms or 3-4 IP x 2 gms If we go extra innings, we might end up using ERod or Wright once for 4+ IP, or we could have Velazquez or Johnson on the roster, instead of Kelly.

There is absolutely no reason to believe there is a bigger chance this happens with Wright vs Barnes, Hembree, Kelly, or any other Sox RP'er not named Kimbrel (or maybe Brasier).
