  1. 1,000 Harold Baines's would make the Hall worthless and futile. Just one comes close.
  2. I understand your feelings, and I hope Betts retires in a Sox uniform. I don't think it should be an automatic decision to match any offer made to our aging stars, however.\\ I was glad to see Nomar go and predicted the trade would bring us a ring based on a massive improvement to our SS defense.
  3. Yes, it's a good starting point with possibilities to have great gains without adding any new players. Of course, someone will get hurt, but it will take a lot of injuries to cancel out the above additions, and I didn't even mention Pedey.
  4. Ah, come on! You didn't like... "Instead of building newer and larger weapons of mass destruction, I think mankind should try to get more use out of the ones we have" "I think the mistake a lot of us make is thinking the state-appointed shrink is our friend" "If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason." "One thing a computer can do that most humans can't is be sealed up in a cardboard box and sit in a warehouse" "If I had a mine shaft, I don't think I would just abandon it. There's got to be a better way." "Broken promises don't upset me. I just think, why did they believe me?" "When I found the skull in the woods, the first thing I did was call the police. But then I got curious about it. I picked it up, and started wondering who this person was, and why he had deer horns." "The people in the village were real poor, so none of the children had any toys. But this one little boy had gotten an old enema bag and filled it with rocks, and he would go around and whap the other children across the face with it. Man, I think my heart almost broke. Later the boy came up and offered to give me the toy. This was too much! I reached out my hand, but then he ran away. I chased him down and took the enema bag. He cried a little, but that's the way of these people." "Laurie got offended that I used the word "puke." But to me, that's what her dinner tasted like." "The face of a child can say it all, especially the mouth part of the face"
  5. Harvey signs with the Angels for $11M /1 year with $3M in possible incentives.
  6. I get that, but 2 ER for 1 more IP is an 18.00 ERA. I doubt the staffs suffered to that extent.
  7. Maybe hire Jack Handy for even more deeper thoughts!
  8. No team would claim him, but he might end up like Pablo- playing for min wage as we pay the remainder of the salary owed. (I'm guessing that salary would count against our luxury budget.)
  9. I think the Sox also understood the theory of diminishing returns as players age. If there is one area the Sox have excelled in, it seems to be knowing when to let their best players walk. They've swung and missed on a few, for sure, like Lester, DLowe and Beltre, but by and large, we've done an excellent job knowing when enough is enough and not overpaying our aging stars for past value. Even the Damon departure made sense, as he could only DH or play LF for us in his latter years, and we had those slots filled up. I hated seeing Pedro go, but we knew his arm was held together by a thread. We paid Schilling $8M to not play his last year. The Manny trade worked. Dumping Beckett and CC brought us the 2013 ring. (Even trading AGon worked as Napoli did better.) A walking Ellsbury was a godsend. Trading Nomar in the nick of time. He sucked afterwards and cabrera brought us a ring in 2004, and his comp picks were Ellsbury & Lowrie! Bill Mueller walked and played just one more year. Jason Bay quickly imploded after we let him walk. Papelbon had some good years after leaving but turned into trouble.
  10. We could see this increase in playing time for 2019 (assuming no injuries): Pearce (.901) 165 PAs to over 350. Vazquez (.540) 269 PAs to over 350. Devers (.731) 490 PAs to over 550 or 600. Holt (.774) 367 PAs to over 450. (Betts and Bogey missed some time in 2018: both could gain 50-100 PAs.) Eovaldi (3.33) 54 IP to over 150. Sale (2.11) 158 IP to over 190. ERod (3.82) 130 IP to over 170. Wright (2.68) 54 IP to over 140. Brasier (1.60) 34 IP to over 60. Thornburg (5.63) 24 IP to over 50. Poyner (3.22) 22 Ip to over 40.
  11. They were some of the greatest players of their time. They should be in. I guess it's all relative. Many disagree with where the line for "greatness" begins and ends.
  12. Not any dumber than Baines being in the same hall as Babe Ruth.
  13. 5 IP and 1 ER is better than 6 IP 3 ER, even with the added stress factor to the pen.
  14. Even 5 IP 2 ERs is better than 6 & 3. Or, something like this... 5.0 - 0-1 ER 5.2- 2 ER 6.2- 3 ER 8.0- 4 ER
  15. Good. One- The Hall of Fame The other- The Hall of Excellence
  16. There's no way to ever boot any of these guys out of the Hall, so there will forever be lame arguments that if one undeserving player made it in, then other similar players should be in, too. The whole thing is a mess. It can't be fixed, except for going forward, but there seems to be no meaningful drive to correct the system.
  17. Likely PAs and IP'd lost from 2018 PAs 195 HRam (.708) 143 Kinsler (.604) 27 Phillips (.520) Possible gains: More PAs for Pearce, Pedey, Holt, Nunez (Vaz may take some PAs from Leon & Devers could get more.) IP 74 Pomeranz (6.08) 66 Joe Kelly (4.39) 62 C Kimbrel (2.74) 17 W Cuevas (7.41) 14 C Smith (3.77) 6 Jalen Beeks (12.79) Possible gains: More IP from Eovaldi, Wright, Johnson, Velazquez, Thornburg, Poyner, Workman
  18. Boggs was a hitting machine. It was hard not to like what he gave the Sox, but as great as he was, I never really was a huge fan of his. He also hit .259 the season before leaving. His OBP was still .353, but that was over 70 points below his career .415 OBP. He played 7 more years, 5 w NYY & 2 w TBR, and he only had an OPS over .778 twice, and both of those years he had under 545 PAs. It sucked seeing him play for the Yanks, but in hindsight, it was no great loss.
  19. That rule was changed last bargaining session, too.
  20. True, but paying Pablo to play in SF and having his salary count on our budget is way worse. BTW, where is the list of DFA's player's pay?
  21. One could argue that quality start was his second worst start out of this 6 game stretch: IP - ER 5.0 -0 5.0 -1 6.0 -3 (Quality Start) 3.0 -7 5.1 -1 5.0 -2
  22. I doubt it.
  23. No. They changed the rules. His contract would still count on 2020.
  24. Yes, I get it. I was just adding the part about his 2020 salary, too.
  25. It's a minor league deal- no risk.
