I always thought lowly of Piazza after that- for not going after Roger. Clemens is such a dick. He clearly yelled to the ump, "I thought it was the ball!" The lamest excuse ever given in the history of mankind.

Exactly, unlike Clemens throwing a broken bat at a player (Piazza), then telling the ump, "I thought it was the ball!". ' What? Did he think he was playing kickball, where you can throw the ball at the runner?

I guess keeping all 3 was worth $2.4M. Catchers always get hurt. I do think we have a nice cushion already for a July trade. $2.4M more might be needed, but I like still having Leon in the system. As much as I have been tough on Swihart, I hope he proves himself and finally shows us that his potential becomes helpful reality. Vaz will likely catch Sale, Price and either Eovaldi or Porcello (or both). My guess is Swihart catches ERod and maybe some or most of the starts by Porcello or Eovaldi. Maybe a 70-30 split.

This is different from what others are saying. If you are right, then I wonder why we decided to pay him $2.4M to play in AAA and be insurance. That $2.4M added to what we have could have made a big difference in July.

Which makes a huge difference. He'll make $40M over the next 2 years (would have been arb years of $17M + $23M). He then makes $33.5M for 2 years before opt out chance. Then, $30.5M and $32.5M after the opt out and counting the option year. That's more than Sale gets,

Makes you think that when they offered him the $2.4M, they either expected him to make the 25 man roster, or they thought $2.4M was worth having at AAA as a catching insurance policy. Or, maybe Swihart's "improvement" surprised management and forced a change of plans. I'm glad we have Leon as insurance, but as much as I like having him on the team, I think that $2.4M could be better used at the deadline on a pro-rated contract. In a sense, $2.4M can get a $7M pro-rated contract on July 31st.

For a catcher over 7 years...certainly better than above average. How about 4.1, 3.8 and 3.5? Those were his best 3 seasons. Is that "a few above average seasons" or a few "great" seasons?

I misquoted you, sorry, but I'm not sure there's much difference in the two. Maybe your criteria for "greatness" is different from mine. He had the third best WAR for a catcher in those 7 years. Yes, that's above average, but to me, it is exceptional and great. 32 catchers with 1500 PAs 3rd in WAR at 18.2 (top 9%) 5th in OBP at .357 (top 16%) 7th in SLG .453 (top 22%) 7th in OPS at .811 (Only 3 catchers had an OPS higher than .811 last year. Tek averaged that over 7 seasons.) To me, this is certainly closer to "great" than just "above average."

For 6-7 years. I guess the word "great" is subjective, but to me an .811 OPS from a catcher is great. It was 3rd best in that period. Add that to his defense and the intangibles he brought to the game, I maintain he was great for a period of time. If you want to say very good, I wouldn't argue, but "barely better than average" is way off.

Of course, but I'd say the consensus opinion before "hindsight" was that it was an underpay and for less years than open market expectations. Do you disagree with that assessment? Would you be happy, if the Yanks got him on those terms?
