  1. Agreed. I think several teams would want him- just not on their 25 man roster. I'm wonder what the best we can get for Swihart & Ockimey. Or, try to upgrade Johnson or Velazquez by trading one of them with Swihart and Ockimey. Or, upgrade Hembree by trading him with Swihart & Ockimey. Maybe try to cut some budget by trading Moraland or Nunez with the same two players for a cheaper option.
  2. Thanks! No A's or A-'s and only 5 B's. I broke them down by estimated time of arrival: 2019: B Chavis B- Shawaryn C+ Lakins C+ Poyner Late 2019: B Dalbec B DHernandez C+ Ockimey 2020 B- Chatham D Feltman Late 2020 B- Houck 2021 B Mata B Casas B- Groome (?) C+ DReyes C+ Duran C+ JDiaz C+ KCrawford 2022 B- A Flores (?) C+ Decker C+ Howlett
  3. True, but .366 is better than our .312 OBP from our 9 slot this year. I also think Beni should keep getting batter as he gets nearer prime.
  4. The big issue is the budget. Does DD have the authority to go past the $40M mark or even go over by a little? If yes, he can spend a little on a FA pen arm and maybe trade a couple out of options guys like Johnson, Swihart or Hembree for a better pen arm than we have now. If we have only $4-5M to spend, then we may be looking to save it for mid season needs and try to fill a pen role via trade that does not add salary or better yet, lowers it.
  5. Me, too. I often am a contrarian, especially when people make blanket statements using the superlatives words or "always and never." JD is a great hitter and is a different type of hitter than Betts. To me, Betts is better up second, because he gets on base a little more and has better speed (which is not part of my "best hitter" statement, but should be a part of the choice, when things are close). JD may be a slightly better RBI guy, but even if he's even with Betts in power and driving in runs, I put Betts second. I'm okay with Betts at leadoff, but I think the extra RBI opportunities batting second outweigh the extra PAs he would get up first. I like Bogey up 3rd. He's found some power, has decent speed and just seems like a great fit in front of JD up 4th. I have a lot of faith in Devers having a monster or near monster year in 2019. He's up 5th for me with Pearce batting 5th vs LHPs (if he's not up 3rd).
  6. Clear difference and huge divide are not the same thing. Plus, I was just razzin' ya.
  7. I'm encouraged by the fact that he was ready to pitch at the end of the playoffs.
  8. I don't think it is so radical. I like Pearce vs LHPs much more than Beni. I'd be okay with Beni 3rd and Pearce 5th vs lefties.
  9. Agreed, but the good thing is, we have an opening at 1B next year, if Devers's defense does not improve. He did show signs of getting better in the second half of 2018, but the sample size was small.
  10. I've always been a huge Devers fan (more than Moncada). I was glad we kept him. I was high on Kopech, but he was a needed piece to get... Chris Freakin' Sale! Both Moncada and Kopech may end up being great or very good players when all is said and done.
  11. I was mildly surprised they did not protect Ockimey. We will have an opening at 1B in 2020, and that would match up with his estimated time of ML readiness, if ever he does become ML ready. I realize we have Chavis and Dalbec. I don't count Travis, and in some ways, I'd rather we kept Ockimey than Travis. We might work out a trade, but the draft starts soon.
  12. I didn't realize this. I guess he wasn't as good as I remembered him to be prior to 2016.
  13. I used to think the best overall hitter (BA, OBP & SLG) should go 3rd, the best power guy 4th and the highest OBP first, but I have changed my views. I think this would be the best line-up for 2019: vs RHPs 1. Beni LF 2. Betts RF 3. Bogey SS 4. JD DH 5. Devers 3B 6. Moreland 1B 7. Bradley CF 8. Pedey/Holt/Nunez 2B 9. Vaz/Leon C vs LHPs 1. Bogey SS 2. Betts RF 3. Pearce 1B 4. JD DH 5. Beni LF 6. Devers 3B 7. Pedey/Holt/Nunez 2B 8. Bradley CF 9. Vaz/Leon C 7.
  14. MLBTR reports... The Red Sox re-signed infielder Tony Renda to a new minor league deal, Baseball America’s Matt Eddy reports. After playing in 32 games for the Reds as a rookie in 2016, Renda didn’t make it back to the majors until this season, when he appeared in a single game for Boston. The lone appearance was a notable one, as Renda entered the game as a pinch-runner in the 10th inning and scored the winning run in a 5-4 win over the Yankees on August 5. (Renda even received a World Series ring for his modest contribution to Boston’s championship season.) After hitting a combined .318/.373/.453 over 292 PA at the Double-A and Triple-A levels in 2018, Renda will return to the organization after being outrighted after the season.
  15. Should I start a new thread for Renda?
  16. I wouldn't say "no value," but he's not as highly valued as some here think he is. The Mets do need catching, and Swihart may be better than what they have now, at least as their best back-up guy. I'm wondering if Vaz, Johnson and Chavis would do the trick.
  17. He was pretty darn good in 2 of the previous 3 seasons before that dominant one: 2013: 2.03 ERA/1.18 WHIP 2015: 3.67 ERA/1.25 WHIP 2016: 2.15/0.94 No doubt, his velocity spiked in 2016, but he did show he could pitch okay without it. My point was about us maybe not needing a lefty specialist out of the pen. Here is Thornburg's splits: Year vs LHBs/ vs RHBs 2013: .479/.684 2014: .458/.808 2015: .741/.709 2016: .413/.635 2018: .800/.972 3 years under .460 vs LHBs shows some promise. I understand that with Tyler, nothing is for certain.
  18. Thanks. I'm surprised I was asked to explain.
  19. True, but then subtract the RBI's Beni loses, and as Kimmi points out, the differences are minimal. I like Betts 2nd. It's where studies show the best hitter should bat. Beni has improved his base running, so I'm okay with him up 1st. I'd probably have Bogey lead off vs LHPs, but I'm fine with keeping it simple.
  20. Berrs is ideal at any slot. Beni and Bogey are close. JD is ideal for any slot but #1. I'm happy with Devers, Pearce and Moreland sharing the 5 slot. I think Devers busts out this year- in a big way.
  21. Google image of best hitter. The foto is Betts.
  22. I think you might be surprised how much money is made "off the books" or through separate entities. Then, there is the massive growth in each team's worth when the owner goes to sell the team.
  23. I agree 100%!
