  1. You said our pen was bad last year, and yours was the best. How did that work out?
  2. Going over by $300K and losing $500K in slot money is further evidence that the Sox probably felt they had squeaked under the line. It might be a factor in trying hard not to make the same miscalculation this year.
  3. So, we basically chose to go over by $300K and got penalized 10 draft slots plus the slot money that goes with that? I think a miscalculation was made. We insisted on money from Toronto and TB, of all teams, when we traded for Eovaldi and Pearce. The Sox don't usually demand money back, but to me that was a clear sign we were pinching pennies to stay under the $40M line and not to avoid paying a tax on $2M instead of $300K.
  4. You act like our starters go less innings than others, and when Kimmi points out we were 6th in innings by starters and that our current top 5 starters go 5.7, you don't respond. You say we should do everything possible to maximize our chances. We've already spent way more than everyone else over the 2018-2019 season, so why not ask why the Yanks are not going all in, when you guys are the ones that are current underdogs and are well below the max penalty line.
  5. The All Are Healthy Line-up: 1. Beni 2. Betts 3. Bogey 4. Martinez 5. Devers v R/Pearce v L 6. Moreland v R/ Devers v L 7. Pedroia 8. Bradley 9. Vaz (w Porcello/ERod & Eovaldi)/ Leon (w Sale & Price)
  6. Assuming everyone is healthy, here's my opinion on what the depth chart looks like right now: SP Sale Price Porcello ERod Eovaldi Wright Johnson Velazquez Shawaryn D Hernandez (AA) Shepherd C Vazquez Leon Swihart Centeno Hernandez A Rei (AA) 1B Pearce Moreland Holt Swihart (JD?) Chavis Travis Ockimey (Dalbec) 2B Pedroia Nunez Holt Lin Hernandez Renda dela Guerra 3B Devers Nunez Holt Chavis Dalbec Witte SS Bogaerts Lin Holt Hernandez E Ramirez LF Benintendi Martinez Holt Swihart Pearce/Moreland Nunez Lin G Hernandez CF Bradley (Betts from RF) Holt Lin RF Betts Martinez Holt Swihart Lin Brentz DH Martinez Pedroia Pearce Devers Chavis/Dalbec Nunez
  7. If all 5 starters are healthy, here are our pen options: Barnes Brasier Hembree Thornburg Workman (starters>RP'ers) Wright Johnson Velazquez Shawaryn Erasmo Ramirez Poyner Lakins Brewer Walden Putman Runzler Ellington Feltman (AA)
  8. I agree 100%. I'm think of the "I told you so" aspect of the issue. If we made some move to make our pen better, and it didn't work, then at least we could say we tried, and the naysayers' arguments would be hard to make. I love our team, as is. We have a little budget wiggle room for the mid season. I'm ready for the season to begin.
  9. Worst case scenario: we take too long going through all our options and we lose the division and have to play-in to make the playoffs due to all the experimenting. I still am fine with this plan. I don't want to see our draft pick lowered two years in a row. I don't want every other fan in the world using our insanely high budgets as evidence in the "Sox buy championships" argument. I don't want our rebuild years to be harder than it already looks like it will be. I like our odds this year. Back-to-back!
  10. Certainly, if we start off slow due to poor pen performance, and we end up losing the division by a game or two, there can be a strong argument made that it was a mistake waiting to make a move to strengthen the move mid season, but I think DD did a great job making us a super strong team. Fixing the pen is probably one of the easiest mid season fixes, although several times those deals don't work out too well. I know avoiding the play-in game is a worthy goal, and it is risky putting serious pen issues on the back burner by "waiting it out," but we've already done a lot to build this team to the top, I'm not going complain about one weak area on paper in February.
  11. Let's all have a round of Kimmi's lager.
  12. Somebody they didn't foresee getting it? I think we went over by $300K. I think a mistake was made, but it's all so complicated with pro-rated ML -minor league salaries, bonuses, etc...
  13. It would be nice to have Buttrey now, assuming he what he showed for a brief sample size last year, but look at what we got from the 5 players for those 5 partial seasons. To me, it looks like a steal.
  14. Here is what we gave up for Eovaldi, Pearce (plus some cash), Nunez, Reed & Kinsler (with some cash): Ty Buttrey, Jalon Beeks, Shaun Anderson, Jamie Callahan, Gerson Bautista, Stephen Nogosek, Gregory Santos, Santiago Espinal, Williams Jerez (On a side note: I think the cash we got along with Pearce and Kinsler was an attempt to stay under the max line. I think us going over by such a small amount may have been a miscalculation by the Sox.)
  15. I agree, but IMO, we have a need for at least one solid pen arm. I'm fine with waiting to see if someone steps it up, but making a deal now or in the summer would not be a panic move, unless we had t o part with someone really important or spend foolishly to do so.
  16. The panic option may very well be adding a reliever or two before the trade deadline. Why would holding off until the deadline to get more bang for your buck be a "panic move?" I think it might be our most effective option remaining. Have the best team by the playoffs. I know winning the division is very important, but look what we've got in mid season deals the last 2 years: Eovaldi Pearce Kinsler Nunez Reed
  17. Okay. I shouldn't have said "no limit". If there really was no limit, why aren't you screaming for Machado and Harper? We could move Devers to 1B and trade JBJ for a RP'er? The "limit" is to be prudent. It's okay to go over the line, if the cost is prudent. No way $29M for Kimbrel is prudent. Signing someone for $3-5M is another point, but on that point, the mid season pick-up is probably a better idea in the context of more bang for your buck and being prudent.
  18. I agree, but he's done pretty well vs RHPs of late, and Moreland has been hurt or playing hurt a lot since joining the Sox. OPS Vs RHPs only Year Pearce/Moreland 2018 .828/ .780 2017 .767/ .784 2016 .795/ .700 2015 .765/ .876 2014 .856/ .692 2014-2018 vs RHPs: .802 Pearce .774 Moreland vs LHPs .884 Pearce .690 Moreland If we could trade Moreland, we could have some more money to acquire a RP'er(s). We'd probably have to pay some of his salary, but any budget relief could help. (Plus, we have Chavis and Dalbec to fill in for Moreland, and Holt & Swihart (amybe JD?) can play 1B.)
  19. Their value would be infinitely better than Brady.
  20. If he waits until July 31st, the cost should be about 1/3 or $2M for a 6 million dollar man. He could get two and still be under the max line.
  21. His plan might be to simply fix the pen mid season at a reduced cost. Look what we gave up for Eovaldi last summer. I'm not saying that type of deal can be easily duplicated, but that sort of deal is better than paying Kimbrel $29M and being bumped down in the draft for the second year in a row.
  22. Because $29M for Kimbrel is insane. The article also says what Ottavino would have cost. Also, I said no limit but be prudent. I have no beef with the arguments on why he's not signing someone at $3M, but maybe he thinks trading during season will net a better RP'er for the money, and being strong for the playoffs is more important than being strong in February.
  23. Even if any GM had no spending limit, none would pay Kimbrel $29M for 2019.
  24. Maybe Henry told DD there is no spending limit but to be prudent, and DD does not want to pay Kimbrel $29M for 2019.
  25. Yes, and if things look bad in May or June, it is possible to make deals then, if needed.
