I think it's about having Gio for the playoffs and not positioning for a preferred slot in the playoffs. These types of choices occur all season, when a manager chooses not to use their closer or a certain RP'er, because they are looking at the long game not just that one game's results.

We need Gio to start a playoff game. That is a no brainer. We start De Leon and try to win.

DHam has 2 pluses: 1. Baserunning, but Eaton is nearly as good at that. 2. Defense at 2B, but Romy is good enough at 2B and might play their FT. The only issue might be that Romy could play 1B vs LHPs, since Lowe really sucks vs lefties, but again, DHam sucks vs LHPs, too, so no way I play him over Lowe. Sorry, DHam. You sit this out. You did nothing to earn a slot.

We probably only need 11 pitchers- 12 tops, but we'll need an innings eater, in case someone(s) gets yanked early or we want a mop up long relief guy. I'd go with 2: Early and Harrison. That makes 11 with your 9. The 12th and maybe 13th guys would be between Murphy, Tolle and Kelly- in that order, in my opinion. (Kelly out and maybe Tolle, too..) The bigger flaw is giving division winners a higher initial seed that teams with better records. The playoffs should be seeded by record. 1. TOR or NYY vs winner of 4-5 seeds. 2. NYY or TOR vs winner of 3 (SEA)-6 seeds. TOR and NYY earned the two best records by being the two best team. They played in the toughest division against tougher opponents.

Unless Bregman totally collapses after deciding to stay with BOS, he will still get another deal afterwards. He's getting so much from us, that if you add what he might get in his next contract to this one, it could easily outweigh what he might get on a 4-5 year new deal, this winter.
