  1. I do think shedding the Hicks contract might allow us to get Alonso over Naylor or Hoskins. I'm not saying Alonso will cost $24M less (plus Duran's money) than these two, but the savings might be enough to keep us under the tax line. Sign Alonso, Torres and trade Duran, Hicks and others for a solid SP'er and we can still reset the tax line.
  2. Soxprospects.com names their 2025 All Star Pitchers: Tolle, Early, Fajardo, Holobetz & 4 RP'ers... https://news.soxprospects.com/2025/10/2025-soxprospectscom-all-stars-pitchers.html
  3. Teoscar was 2025 money. Santander had better recent numbers than Alonso, last winter.
  4. Differed money is not worth as much, but even $40M is not really an outlier.
  5. Why not compare Alonso's last winter signing to .... $26M/7 W Adams $31.7 AAV for Bregman 22 x 3 Teoscar (OPS+ 146, 131, 128, 108, 135 in previous seasons) $18.5 5 Santander (coming off 120, 121, 131 OPS+ seasons) Now, it looks closer to the "norm." Soto was an outlier. There seems to be 1-2 a year.
  6. No. I do not think Soto or Vladdy set the market rate for everyone. Why are you just looking at the top two signings? Nobody else came close to Soto, even Alonso.
  7. Spotrac assigns these market values (AAV) to UFAs: 40.1 Tucker OF 33.3 Framber SP 29.4 Alonso 1B 26.9 R Suarez SP 26.4 Cease SP 24.9 Schwarber (DH but can play 1B) 23.3 Bichette SS (Can TOR afford him after Vladdy?) 18.7 Gallen 16.2 Eflin 15.9 M Kelly, 15.5 Bassitt, 15.1 Naylor, 15.0 E Suarez Options/Opt Outs... 30.4 Bellinger 30.4 Imanaga 25.9 Story 25.0 Bregman 24.2 Bieber
  8. His best OPS+ seasons (all 680+ PAs seasons) 147 2019 146 2022 144 2025 Yes, his 122 and 123 seasons before 2025 did not help, but he still hit 80 HRs with 206 RBI. I like the fact that he's a RHB and would be within a sea of LHBs with the Sox- much like Manny, When I speak of us trying to do more big deals than a bunch of moderate one, Alonso is near the top of my thoughts, if not #1. He turns 31, soon, but that does not bother me. I'd like Schwarber, but I think Alonso is more likely to sign with a new team, despite the Mets deep pockets. I don't think he gets anything near $300M. He might get $200M/6- maybe $210M/7, but I seriously doubt it.
  9. I don't want us to trade Rafaela, and I agree the contract looks good for the team. Campbell's is in doubt, but I still think most GMs, who can afford him, would take him and his deal for something useful going to us. Duran's $8M + 2 arbs is a big plus to almost all but a handful of teams. Maybe find a big spending team and offer a Duran+ Yoshida or Duran + Hicks package. Just do better than the Betts + half Price deal's return.
  10. I'm confused why we offered Soto $600M and not Alonso $100M/3.
  11. Think of it as a massive overpay for Soto that does not set the "market rate." Nor might Vladdy's deal.
  12. You think the Mets paid Alonso $30M/1 and next year he gets $70M a year?
  13. Brez was a genius to drive up the price- never intending to sign Juan.
  14. Alonso was 100% an unrestricted FA after 2024 after playing 162 games in 2024 and hitting a huge HR in the playoffs. He got an optout after year one and $30M/1 w player option for $24M from one of the two biggest spending owners in MLB history.
  15. He can spend close to $40-45M and reset. We can trade for one major slot fill. We could try to dump some salary, like Yoshida and Hicks, but would be lucky to save $10M AAV on both combined. Trading Duran saves $8M AAV, Campbell $7.5 or Rafaela $6.25M. If we could save some on Yoshida/Hicks and trade Duran & Campbell, we'd be nearing $65-70M.
  16. One owner overpaid Soto. That does not mean every elite hitter gets $70M.
  17. Alonso got $70M? Alonso got only $30M from the one of the richest owners in MLB, last year, and now he's a year older. How is he getting $70, next year? $70M/2 is not even happening. Alonso plus Schwarber might get $70M a year. Suarez is getting old. He might get $70M/3. Tucker might get $45M x 5, $40M x 6 or $35M x 7.
  18. Anthony ($16M AAV) + Hicks ($12M AAV) is almost what the Devers tax hit was, but Hicks is done in 2 years. We still have the Bregman money (32M)... ooops... Crochet's extension +$24.5M + Campbell's extension ($6.5M) But hey, what about Buehler's $21M + Gio's $19M? That's $40M, right? Ummmm, right? Hello, hello! Are you there, JH? "Just nod, if you can hear me. Is there anyone at home?"
  19. IMO, we have 3 major holes, and in theory, losing the contracts of Devers, Bregman, Buehler and Giolito should allow us to fill them, despite several large extensions kicking in, next season. If we focus all resources on just 3 slot (4 tops) instead of trying to go cheap on 5-6 additions, I think we can improve enough to be considered a top 4-6 team. (This year, we were a top 8-12 team.) 1. 3B or 2B (Suarez, Bregman, K Marte, Torres is borderline) 2, SP2 3. 1B (Alosno, Schwarber, Suarez with Hoskins and Naylor as borderline) ( optional ) 2B or 3B (We'd have to count on Mayer, Romy, Sogard, Eaton & DHam to fill a slot, instead) If we add 2 borderlines, we'd need 4 tota
  20. To me, all these guys would be better at DH than another position: Yoshida, Refsnyder (if he returns) Duran, Casas, Campbell and maybe even Romy. Or 1B options are Lowe (high arb cost projected, so might be nontendered) Casas, Romy & Campbell. Assuming we count Mayer at 3B or 3B (Or Mayer at SS and Story at 3B or 2B) what else do we have as options? DHam (2B only) Eaton (3B) Romy (2B, 3B?) Sogard, Grissom (yuck)
  21. I'd say not by enough to make a big difference. No matter how big we go, we will likely be depending on several players returning from the EOY IL list. How well they rehab and get back into a groove could mean everything.
  22. Is this an unreasonable plan? Sign Hoskins and G Torres Trade Duran, Clarke& Sandlin for Joe Ryan. Next question: is this enough to make us better? (Minus Gio, Bregman, Wilson and some low performers like Buehler.) Crochet, Ryan, Bello, Sandoval, Crawford/Dobbins/Early/Harrison/Fitts/Perales Chapman, Whitlock, Slaten, Weissert, Tolle, Bernardino, Criswell, Hicks/Moran/Wink/Murphy/Kelly/Guerrero 1. Anthony LF 2. Torres 2B 3. Abreu RF 4. Story SS/3B 5. Yoshida/Romy DH 6. Hoskins 1B 7. Mayer 3B/SS 8. Narvaez C 9. Rafaela CF Bench: Wong, Romy, JH Garcia, DHam/Campbell
  23. I am near the bottom of the list on those who play the blame game. I defended Devers and spoke to the language and cultural barriers. If you think he's totally blameless, fine.
  24. I would not be surprised if we pass on any RP'ers other than minor league depth signings. I thinking we convert starters to the pen and we rely more on Moran, Murphy, Kelly and Guerrero than we did in 2025. I think Fitts, Criswell and Tolle might be pen arms, at some point in 2026.
  25. Agreed. I'm not hanging this all on Cora for not doing it. I'm not sure of Brez told him to, or not. This was a serious ding on management, for sure. (Devers was not blameless, either. His willingness to play 1B w SFG exposed that.)
