  1. I agree. My biggest splash, this year, might be Taillon, but he only has 2 more years of control.
  2. I can't see us winning in 2022 or 2023 without adding an excellent SP'er to the rotation. Counting on Sale, Eovaldi and ERod to hit the trifecta in any given year is a long shot. Name 2 adequate starters: Odorizzi & Paxton/Walker/Lester? I'm not sure they'd take short deals, and I'm not sure I want them on long deals.
  3. I mentioned 1 year deals that would bridge us to the hopeful return of Sale and maybe even ERod & Eovaldi's better chances at doing well in 2022 more than 2021. Then, as you suggested, we make the big splash SP'er addition. Yes, it wouldn't hurt to add a durable SP'er, now, that could help in 2022 and maybe beyond, but that could be something we do in 2022, as well. I'm not seeing many capable and durable SP'ers on the market, right now, and I'm not big on building a winning rotation by seeking out good 5th starters.
  4. Of course, they don't verbalize their strategy, but if we acquire one big name and a 2-3 decent role players, we actually can be competitors for a wild card slot in 2021. Our eyes would still be on not making any major deals that may hurt our chances in 2022 or 2023 and beyond.
  5. 2 separate deals could amount to the same thing.
  6. We may look for 1 year deals like these guys or other more durable but not spectacular pitchers to bridge us to the time frame you are talking about: 2022 or 2023 and beyond.
  7. I'm all for looking more longterm, but I think Sox management wants to give the impression we can compete in 2021 as we build up for bigger and better things for 2022 and beyond. If we can trade for a pitcher with 3+ years of control, it's worth looking into. It won't be easy.
  8. That Hosmer signing really bit them in the arse.
  9. Don't stop: you're on a roll!
  10. Word is Pitt is trying to move Stallings ©, Frazier (2B) and a SP'er Musgrove or Taillon. If we can get a third team involved (Philly? STL?) that will send prospects to Pitt along with maybe 1 or 2 second tier prospects from us, maybe we can get what we need without leaving a gaping hole at catcher.
  11. STL also has quite a few salary dump players that could be added to make the return much less. STL has a lot of underwater contratcs. Philly has 2Bman Kingery (17.7) or McCutchen (-18.0). I'm not sure how much they'd give us to take on one of those deals. The trade value site accepted these trades: 3WAY BOS: Bader & Fowler from STL Taillon, Stallings & Frazier from PITT STL: Vaz & Beni Pitt: Chatham, Bello & Groome from BOS Herrera & Woodford from STL ______________________ BOS: Kiermaier, Anderson & Manchan PHI: Vaz & Beeks TB: Abel, Bello & Flores ______________________ 2 WAY BOS: Eflin, Abel, Matchan, McCutchen or Kingery PHI: Vaz, Pivetta & Beni ______________________ BOS: Hasely, Marchan, V Velasquez PHI: Vazquez ______________________ BOS: Bader, Hudson, Fowler, Knizner STL: Vaz, Beni, Ward, Groome, Pivetta ______________________ BOS: Bader, Herrera, Knizner & Fowler STL: Vaz, Beni & Groome ______________________ Not accepted: Vaz for Kingery, Hasely, Abel, Marchan & $3M
  12. Do they use WAR and projected WAR? If yes, bWAR or fWAR.
  13. I doubt Vaz goes to TB. Philly maybe.
  14. cots has Torres with 3 years of team control (all arbs) and Castillo with just 3 arb years. Although Torres will likely make more in 4 years than Castillo makes in 3, you'd think the extra year would make Torres gain value over Castillo. That Trade Value site must just think Castillo is way better than Torres.
  15. I'm still thinking that in these times, the best strategy may be to hold back and then mop up on several bargain deals after the major dominoes fall. I know that's not what many want, and big splash names increase viewership and ticket sales, but there are several ways to get competitive. I could see us signing 4-5 bargain basement free agents that are decent to good and trading for one big name SP'er.
  16. Of course. Those were depth signings you really have very little faith in Bloom.
  17. I think we trade for a SPer like Taillon and sign 2-3 RPers
  18. I agree it is likely we add a2b man and CFer but it’s not a sure thing. We may avoid adding a 1Bman.
  19. Hernandez is very capable at 2B and in CF. I could see him playing about 50-50 at each. While Arroyo does not excite me, either, neither does Beni in CF or Renfroe playing RF FT and Verdugo in CF. If we add only Hernandez and no other OF'ers what's worse? Arroyo/Munoz/Chatham/Arauz/Chavis at 2B or a not-ready-for-prime-time Duran in CF or Beni in LF FT, Renfroe in RF full time and Verdugo in CF? Now, if we add a CF'er and Hernandez, I agree, Hernandez is the FT 2Bman. On Munoz, if he does well in AAA, he could very well end up back on the 40 man roster and playing 2B/Utility for the Sox in 2021, especially if we don't add a 2Bman.
  20. RIP, Phil. Also, we missed KC Jones.
  21. Another factor to consider is whether the struggling player is taking up a roster spot that someone else on the 40 man roster looks capable of filling well. As of right now, our roster is not deep with players I'm thinking deserve a shot over Beni, JD or anyone else that may be struggling. As for Beni & JD, I wouldn't count their 2020 struggles as a full season. Plus, Beni was dealing with injury issues. Their trade value is pretty low, right now, so we'll roll the dice and see what happens.
  22. I like that he can play a good defensive CF, as well. If Arroyo or Munoz do well in 2021, maybe he'll spend a lot of time in CF. He can also spell our starters at 3B, SS, 1B and corner OF. He'll make having a DH only DH easier to handle. He'll make other roster decisions easier, due to his flexibility. I hope we sign him.
  23. By all accounts, Bloom is working hard to fine the right pieces needed to get us back to the top. It may take some time, but I think we'll do pretty good along the way to our next ring.
  24. Hernandez has a bit of pop in his bat. He averages about 25 HRs per 700 PAs- career. He has a .744 OPS over the last 4 seasons. Here are his defensive metrics (some small sample sizes): 2B (1263 innings) -6.2 UZR/150 and +18 DRS CF (1109 innings) +8.4 UZR/150 and +4 DRS LF (603 innings) +18 UZR & +14 DRS SS (536 innings) +10.4 UZR & +3 DRS RF (342 innings) +11.9 UZR & +3 DRS 3B (155 innings) -28.4 UZR & -1 DRS 1B (89 innings) +17.4 UZR & -2 DRS
  25. He can play 2B & CF, among many other positions, so it makes sense. Maybe he's the only new, non pitching piece we add, this winter.
