  1. The cliff is real. It was worth it. 2018 was the best Sox team, ever! Hopefully, the rebuild will not take too long.
  2. I was hoping we get a solid closer and set up man. It looks like we may not get either, unless by trade. We better get Odorizzi to lessen the pain of not boosting the pen by as much as we had hoped.
  3. Can we stay under the limit by signing Odorizzi, Richards, Colome, Pillar & Kike? (maybe by trading Beni for a cheap RP'er or OF'er?)
  4. Devinski to AZ TOR looking at Brantley. (You think they'd be looking for a SP'er.)
  5. Assuming we keep Beni or replace him with another OF'er plus maybe adding Pillar and Kiki, our 4-5 man bench might be: Plawecki Arroyo (Hernandez is starting 2Bman) Renfroe Chavis (if not traded- maybe Munoz is added back to 40 man, if Chavis is traded) 5th bench slot and only 12 pitchers: Wilson or Puello/Gettys would have to be added to the 40 man roster (no big issue) (We could also use Arauz as the 5th sub, making Kiki more usable in the OF, when not playing 2B.)
  6. Indeed. It appears most of the AL East is getting worse. If we do spend $20-30M more, we should gain on everyone, even if just slightly. A lot will depend on heath and rebounds, but we don't need everyone to stay healthy and/or rebound- just 2 or 3 out of the 6 to 8 in that category need to play well for us to gain significantly over every AL East team, except maybe the Jays. Just 20-25 total GS'd from Sale and ERod combined could be a major boost over 2020. It's not a big stretch to 2 from imagine Devers, JD and Beni to return to 2018 or 2019 form. One can even imagine Bogey or Verdugo going nutty great in 2021. It's possible Dalbec competes for ROY. DHern could finally lower his BB rate. Taylor could return to 2018-2019 form. Maybe Eovaldi starts 25 games. Lots of ifs and maybes, but almost every AL East team has as many as we do.
  7. So is the best we can hope for is Odorizzi, Colome, Kike and Pillar, then maybe trade Beni for a RP'er or lesser RP'er and CF'er/RF'er?
  8. I'd be okay with Tanaka or Odorizzi. I just don't see Tanaka wanting to play here. I guess you could say Paxton is as good as Odorizzi, so maybe he'd be okay. I'm hoping for Odorizzi, the guy I thought might be the best SP'er for the money, this winter. If we don't get Hand, and it looks like we won't, I'm not sure there is anybody left I'd view as a lock down closer.
  9. If we sign Hernandez as OF depth and nobody else, he'd be the 4th OF'er not Renfroe. If we trade Beni and add one OF'er plus Hernandez, Kike will be the 4th or 5th OF'er- not Renfroe. If we see a net gain of 2 OF'ers and still sign Kike, Renfroe may be the 4th OF'er and Kike the 5th, depending on how good the two we get. Ideally, Renfroe is a platoon LF'er. I'd rather not see him get much time in RF, but even there, it should only be as a platoon.
  10. How are the Rays and Yanks better, as of right now? At worse, we gained slightly on both, so far, even if by getting worse by less. To me, they have gotten worse by more than us replacing JBJ with Renfroe. The Yanks replaced Tanaka, Paxton & Happ with a guy coming off a major injury- Kluber. The Rays lost Snell. We will be spending over $20-25M, soon. They are both about done spending. The Jays improved but lack a solid rotation, even if they all do as well as can be expected.
  11. Sale and ERod gave us zero in 2020, so they can't really get worse, unless they both pitch at a 5.50 ERA or worse. Losing JBJ and gaining Renroe looks to be a minus, but who knows how well or poorly JBJ will do in 2021. Let's have this conversation after we add a few more players.
  12. Yankee Rotation on opening day: Cole 30: Solid, durable & great Kluber 35: 37 IP the last 2 seasons Montgomery 28: 75 IP the last 3 seasons German 28: 143 IP the last 2 seasons Garcia 21: 34 IP, last year. (111 IP in minors in 2019: 4.28 ERA/1.347 WHIP) King 25:30 IP MLB in last 2 seasons (24 IP in 2019 minors: 5.48 ERA/ 1.239 WHIP) (IL) Severino 26: 12 IP the last 2 seasons. Excellent beforehand. Yankee IP leaders 2019 (SP'ers) 182 Tanaka 4.45 161 Happ 4.91 151 Paxton 3.82 142 German 4.03 107 Sabathia 4.95 69 Green 4.17 2020: 73 Cole 2.84 49 Happ 3.47 48 Tanaka 3.56 44 Montgomery 5.11 34 Garcia 4.98 20 Paxton 6.64 27 King 7.76 (13 IP in relief) Tanaka, Happ, Paxton and CC totaled over 592 IP in 2019 (76% of SP'er IP). Tanaka, Happ and Paxton totaled 118 IP in 2020 (40% of SP'er IP).
  13. Angels to sign Quintana. Looks like Odorizzi is the only guy left, for us, IMO.
  14. Agreed, but adding Kluber while losing Tanaka, Paxton and Happ is not an improvement. They have as many questionable starters as we do. Some are young with a lot of potential, but we all know how that can work out. They are not done, but if they are being truthful about staying under the tax line, they have less than $6M left to spend to our $30M. They kill us in pen comps, but our rotation is close, assuming health, and that's before our expected addition. Our offense is close. Our defense sucks. Our pen is way behind.
  15. More likely, Hernandez would be part of the 2B mix, and yes, Chavis should be traded, and our 4th OF'er. Depending on how well Arroyo or Chavis do, and if we have Beni or some other OF'er, Hernandez could become our FT 2Bman or CF'er- NOT both.
  16. Our healthy rotation also compares to the Yanks rotation. Maybe not better, but not all that worse, either, especially if Sale can come close to Cole. Our offense was fine, last year, despite down seasons from several key players- like JD, Beni & Devers. If most of our players just return to their better form of 2019 or 2020, not to mention 2018, we could make massive gains in win totals. That's with no additions and just decent health. That's the optimist view. There is plenty to worry about, too, and some key additions can help put some of those to rest.
  17. Every team has many "ifs." I'm not disagreeing with your point. We seemed to have more than our fair share of injuries and "bad years" from too many players. Expecting a return to the norm is something that is probable not just wishful. We are also not done setting our opening day roster. I'm convinced we will make some significant additions. We should easily pass the O's (no biggie) and come closer to the rest of the AL East than we were in 2020. Only the Jay s seem to have improved by more than us, on paper, so far. The Yanks appear to want to stay under the tax line, so they have much less "budget space" than we do- going forward. They also lost Tanaka, Paxton & Happ. We lost JBJ. The sky is not falling on Sox Nation.
  18. Kike could fill the CF & 2B role or 2B/4th OF'er. Yes, Moreland will likely get closer to $3M than 4 or 5.
  19. TB and the O's have gotten worse. NYY has still lost more than they've gained. We might be even, as of now. TOR has gotten better.
  20. Yes. I agree. $13-15M SP $6-8M solid RP $3-5M RP $3-5M CF $3-5M 2B $3-5M Moreland?
  21. I could see us spending to a point just under the tax line, but if we are in the race at the deadline, we might spend enough to end up over the line. Likely? Maybe not- but possible.
  22. I'm thinking he gets $15M/2 or $20M/3. I wouldn't go that high.
  23. Yes, and even with the small moves we've made, it's more positive than the O's and Rays, so far, for 2021. Hopefully, we spend the $30M wisely. We shouldn't just sign the best players on the market, because they are better than the others. Most felt CC was the best OF'er available, Pablo was better than Headley and on an on... If most of the players some posters have been clamoring for us to sign end up being duds, will they remember being upset when we "let them go?" I remember one poster going nutty over our need to sign Hosmer. Yes, we need a SP'er and closer, but are the ones already signed by others really the ones to lead us to vast improvement? Sure, the list of available players is shrinking quickly, but there is enough left to move us up in the standings. There are also trade possibilities.
  24. A lot of money. We could have used him, but I can't see paying that much.
  25. Depends what we get for Beni. If we get a pitcher and then sign Renfroe, we'd be better off.
