  1. Dude, Devers is not going to be a DH at 25. He will be a plus defensive 1Bman, if he continues to suck at 3B D.
  2. Okay, but we aren't paying him to play for another team. Add his contract and it's still only about 15%- significant, but not the reason we look so bad.
  3. Not really. $16M/yr for Price $2.8M Beni That's less than 10% of $200M.
  4. All that, and we still have a budget over $200M! Thanks, Dave!
  5. I doubt it. The depth beyond those 26 is basically non existent.
  6. As bad as things are, we're one behind the Yanks with 158 to go.
  7. LOL, went back and fixed it.
  8. For argument's sake, let's say we extended Betts at the same exact contract he got with the Dodgers, even though that is far from a given happening, and we were also made to stay under the luxury tax, this year. Here is what our 2021 roster might look like, subtracting Mookie's $30.4M a year from this past winter's spending budget: No Richards $10M No Ottavino $8.9M No EHern $7M No Renfroe $3.1M No Sawamura $1.5M SP: ERod, Perez, Pivetta, Houck, Seabold RP: Barnes, DHern, Taylor, Abdriese, Whitlock, Brice, Valdez, Brewer, M Hall C: Vaz, Plawecki 1B: Dalbec 2B: Arroyo 3B: Devers SS: Bogey LF: Cordero/ Marwin CF: Duran RF: Betts DH: JD UR: Chavis/ Arauz (No Downs in the minors, either.) Now, there's a playoff team!
  9. I think a select few teams, maybe even the Sox, might have offered what the Dodgers gave him as a FA.
  10. Nope. He doesn't play 3B, 2B and SS.
  11. Agreed. Yes, we over-killed it in 2018, but we got a ring. We'll "go for it," again, at some point- hopefully sooner rather than later. There's no way I can agree that "every fan should be concerned how Henry spends his money." The guy has single-handedly revived the Sox from decades of frustration and agony. If he chooses to just spend $200M a year for a while (still top 3 to 5), instead of going all out every year, I'm 100% fine with that. When we get close enough to being 1-2 big players away from winning, then I'm thinking Henry will okay a pounce.
  12. Re-signing or not has nothing to do with the trade. It is a separate transaction. Yes, one can say that the Dodgers were able to extend him as a result of the trade, but they also forked over a ton of cash. The Sox saved the cash by not extending him. Look, I'd rather we had Betts at what the Dodgers paid, but it came at a price that is not a no brainer win. The contract evens out what Betts will give over the whole length of the deal. We have Verdugo and Downs and the money to spend that would have gone to pay Betts vs Betts alone. That's the deal and signing view. In reality, we traded one (60 game season) year of Betts for Verdugo, Downs and Wong.
  13. If he sucks at 3B, this year, I can't see why he'd be against the idea.
  14. I've felt all along this was the year Devers proves he belongs at 3B or not. I liked the idea, because he had shown long stretches of being a plus-range 3Bman who had some throwing issues that were okay, at times and brutal at other times. Those who think he cannot play 1B are being very pessimistic. 1Bmen do NOT need great or accurate arms. I think Devers can be a plus 1Bman in a very short time. He may DH in his mid 30's.
  15. Probably, but the whole COVID thing changed the dynamic, and we don't know if that changed Betts's mind about going to free agency.
  16. Come on! This is absurd. We traded one year of Betts, and it was a 60 game year. We also dumped half Price's contract. It's a win, if just Verdugo is a regular plus.
  17. Jacked up about being 1-1. Love it!
  18. I'm not sure they've worked him out at 1B any. It's not as easy a move as it may seem, and it's usually something done over the off season with players who have never played a new position, unless they can are in the minors. I think it is sink or swim with Devers at 3B for 2021. DH'ing him would mean playing JD in LF, Verdugo in CF and Renfroe in RF (or Cordero in CF and Verdugo in RF). I'm not for that idea, either, but it might be more doable than throwing Devers to 1B , cold turkey.
  19. Yes, the farm is still below #15, but we took a big step up from #29 or #30. One can't expect much more. We may make some deals at the deadline to strengthen the farm, but yes, the draft and a long-awaited good IFA cycle is much needed.
  20. Devers sits vs the lefty. How is Gonzo a better hitter than Renfroe is vs lefties?
  21. Gotta beat thus lefty. Could this be the line-up? 1. Kike CF 2. Verdugo RF 3. JD DH 4. Bogey SS 5. Devers 3B 6. Renfroe LF 7. Gonzalez 2B 8. Vazquez C 9. Dalbec 1B
  22. I didn't mean my comment to be directed at you. I think we both have similar views on the level of the 2021 Sox team. I have no issues with anyone who felt or feel like we cannot make the playoffs. I only felt like we could compete with near perfect health and almost everything going right. There's not much difference in our outlooks. I was directing that comment towards anyone who changed their views based on these two games or are suggesting a radical realignment of the team based on Devers looking bad on defense in two games (not that he wasn't bad before).
  23. No two games should ever change someone's mind,unless it's like game 6 & 7 of a playoff series.
  24. It's nice seeing baseball, again- weird with just 10% fans. (I think it could be 20-25% and still keep groups apart.) I thought, if everything goes right, we could compete for a WC slot. We still can, but what are the odds everything goes right?
  25. NESN sucks. Eck is good. That's it.
