Nobody is saying give money to every guy who rakes or pitches great in AAA. Hell, some guys get it over AA numbers. The Sox have not had many nationally & highly ranked prospects, so we are talking about a limited number of prospects. The Bello & Rafaela extensions were not mega deals and not given to national-high ranked prospects. Out of Anthony, Mayer, KC, Tolle and Early, we've signed 2, so I'm not seeing the "sign em all" philosophy on display and the need to criticize it. Of course, when KC starts out looking crappy, it looks like an awful idea. The bad month by Anthony, basically one bad month out of 3 or 4, should not be used as proof the idea has no merit or no "reason." I'm fine with disagreeing, but to say there is "no reason" is what I was questioning. -
How does this line of reasoning suggest we extend non-promising players and prospects or even mildly promising ones? Okay, maybe Bello was just mildly promising, but I'm not defending every extension- just saying there is a reason with merit. Health status is a factor, too. To suggest there is no reason to extend young and very promising players is what I am addressing. Many said the same thing we hear about Bello about Ceddanne, too. Not much talk on him, anymore.

Agreed, but to me it's kinda hard to put much of the blame on a guy who seemingly made good moves over the winter. I also think it's disingenuous to blame a guy when he made better moves than most of us wanted made. I'm not calling you out, and I have been critical of Brez, too, after suggesting guys like ESuarez, Polanco & KMarte. So many players are under performing 2025 numbers and/or 2026 expectations. I guess the GM is supposed to foresee that and make choices based on knowing this. Yes, they hold the ultimate accountability for the team success. I think Cora was let go (first) because the underperformance is usually blamed on the manager and not the GM, firstly.

The point being made is that many who are highly critical of Brez and his winter choices wanted guys that are not doing well or are doing worse than who he added, except Durbin & Oviedo.

Well said, but as this pertains to having some players in leadership roles, would Bregman be telling batters something different from Fatse? Or was he just a confidence builder we never replaced?

As of now, they are very close: .766 Duran (,258 in 12 PAs in playoffs) ,760 Yoshida (1.143 in 7 playoff PAs)

The thing is, if Roman was at .700, I would not be concerned, so it's not like he's way off. I think he will have a nice season and continue to improve as he nears prime.

The JH can and should spend more money is a separate issue. I think you are putting too much stock into one month production. I'm concerned, too, but time will tell.

I do think they counted on too much from ANthony, but it's not even May yet and you are acting like it's a foregone conclusion they made a big mistake, yet in an earlier post you said you think Anthony will bounce back. They did add Contreras (not Alonso,) and you don't mention that. I did hope we got a bigger bat to support Willson, Roman, Wilyer and Jarren, so I'm not thrilled with the idea of needing them all to do well, but we did spend on Suarez and Gray instead of a big bat, and the way Crochet & Bello have looked, where would we be without them and Alonso/Bregman/Bichette, instead? We'd be complaining Brez left a hole in the rotation.

You may not like the reason, but there was one with merit. Lock these guys up before they will demand even more money, or gasp... bolt to greener pastures. It's easy to say we could have waited on Bello and KC in hindsight, as we could have extended them for less, now, or simply not extend them at all, if we waited, but... 1. Their contracts are not over and the results are still TBD, despite the outloook being very poor. 2. If the argument is over the philosophy as a whole, then we'll have to wait many year and judge the totality of all these extensions at that time- as a whole. I know the Crochet extension looked like a no-brainer and that is apples to oranges, but using the same 2026 sample size as Bello, how does his extension look, now? I wouldnt be writing KC off, either, but I agree it doesn't look too good.

I've been super high on Willson- perhaps too high. I was glad we got Suarez over what we offered Bregman and certain over what he got. I like Durbin, but he's not the big bat we needed. He may work out fine. When I look at this last winter's moves, while I think we left a big hole on offense, I liked the overall additions. That makes it hard for me to then turn around and blame Brez for not doing better than what I thought was good. Let's hope teh additions more than make up for the power slot hole that was left unfilled.

"Can't miss players" do not have a 1 in a hundred chance of hitting it big. Nobody is asking to lock in Casas, now. There was some talk earlier, and he is an example of why you don't/shouldn't lock every promising prospect up long term. The other aspect is how much are you paying them? Take Bello and KC, who seem like the most likely to be busts. Neither got superstar pay or even good star pay. Remaining pay: Bello: $6M, $8.5M, $16M, $19M then $1M buyout for 2030. That's $50M/4 remaining. What would Bello have gotten as a 26 year old FA coming off a 3 season with a 105 ERA+ and a 6.6 bWAR? Campbell: 26:$2M, 27:$3M, 28:$4M, 29:$6M, 30:$9M, 31:$13M, 32:$16M, 33:$19M club option ($4M buyout), 34:$21M club option (no buyout)

Did the JD raving stop in 2019 and 2022? No, because they weren't having career years in those seasons. Who did Casas rave about when he had a couple nice seasons? How about Abreu who was better in '23-'24 combined than '25? O'Neill & Duran had great seasons in 2024. Who helped them?

Woo is getting lit up- mostly Noah Song & Seth Martinez. KC is 2 for 3, so far. Arias is falling off a cliff- no HRs and just 2-4, so far. Ziehl has gone 6 IP, allowing just 1 run. SAL is up 4-0 in the 7th, as Patton went 5IP 2H 0ER 2BB 6K. Heyman & Azocar homered.

Another comp might be... Bregman + Alonso= 6 WAR or Bichette + Alonso= 6WAR vs Contreras + Mayer/Durbin= 5.9 WAR

No doubt, and he still may work his way into Sox fans' hearts. I'd have been fine adding a big bat AND trading for Durbin. (Maybe no IKF?) In hindsight, BLowe or Donovan might have been the best choices. Hoerner was mentioned as a trade target, and I still think Paredes will have a couple very nice seasons. -
