  1. Something about Florida and "hanging chads!"
  2. I never understood why they did not trade him. Was it because of the salary? If they paid part of it, and that player was on another team's MLB roster, would our portion be counted on our Lux Tax line? Was that it?
  3. I was there for opening day for the infamous closer by committee season, where we blew a big lead late in the game. It was pretty full, that day, but yess, I was able to move around. I actually liked the stadium and atmosphere. There were no catwalk incidents that game.
  4. Around Tampa, there are a lot of "transplants-" people who recently moved there from places like NY and Boston. Many are die-hard Yankee, Sox and other teams' fans, already. They will never convert to Rays fans. They may only watch or go to Rays games, when the Rays play their team. I suppose one could say the same about Bruin and Rangers fans re-locating to Tampa, but I'm not sure the numbers are quite the same- not the fan loyalty. I might be wrong about the baseball-hockey comp and loyalty status, but it's what I think. Of course, nearly everything I think and write is wrong, in your opinion. You seem to be an even bigger contrarian than I am- and I thought I was a bit extreme.
  5. Nice swing. Maybe this guy will jump levels and arrive sooner than we even hope for (not this year, of course.)
  6. I was talking about baseball not hockey. I was talking about the stadium not being as ugly as people might think. I do think they'd draw better in a better location, but I doubt they ever reach the top third of teams. I don't know about TV viewership, but maybe it's higher than expected because they don't go to the games.
  7. There is nothing special about it, but I didn't think it was ugly or uncomfortable. I'm just not sure that even the best stadium in the best location would create a big enough fan base to sustain a healthy budget. Even here in Houston, there is not as big of a fan market ass the population suggests it might- due to Sox fan like myself moving here.
  8. Agreed, and that's why I called a "slim chance" at finding fame.
  9. I've been to their stadium. It's not nearly as bad as many think it is, IMO. Their fanbase problem is not about the stadium: it's about having a nearby population of transplants who are already fans of other teams. Just the Yankee and Sox fans in the area are enough to significantly affect how many people are left that can or might become Rays fans. Just my opinion.
  10. His best chance at playing in the bigs might have been if we traded him to a team that had no lux tax issues.
  11. Our last 3 first round picks have been great: Mayer Yorke Casas (DD)
  12. I think most would choose riches over a slim chance he might have found fame had he played more often. He never showed all that much in the minors, but maybe he was deflated.
  13. Kinda sad. Wonder how often he thinks, "Coulda ___/ Shoulda ____?"
  14. Had he not had the lux tax issue, he might have gotten a chance to play more in Boston.
  15. Many years ago, I proposed the Florida team play half its games in Tampa and half in Miami. The other one could move to NC or elsewhere.
  16. I agree. I'm not sure if the greater depth in the Yankee system outweighs our top heavy advantage, but I don't think jacko can blast our farm, anymore. Thanks Bloom & DD!
  17. fangraphs has this: NYY 60 Volpe 50 Peraza, Medina, Dominguez, Vargas 45+ Schmidt, Y Gomez, Pereira, A Gomez 45 D Garcia, L Gil, O Cabrera, T Sweeney, K Waldichuk 40+ (5 players) 40 (7 players) 35+ (12 players) They have not scored the Sox, yet, but I doubt we are this deep.
  18. Being top heavy is not a bad thing. Most of the very best players come from the top 90 or 100. We do drop off quickly after our 4th best prospect, but we have a lot of hopeful prospects that might deliver 1-2 to the top 100, maybe, after the 2022 season ends. (Duran will graduate from prospect status.) Bello, Jordan, Downs, Seabold W Gonzalez, M Bleis
  19. Speaking of Rusney... MLBTR: The Nationals signed former Red Sox outfielder and one-time top prospect Rusney Castillo to a minor league deal earlier this month. The 34-year-old Cuban defector, who spent 2021 playing for NPB’s Tohoku Rakuten Goldean Eagles, will most likely begin the season with Triple-A Rochester but could be given a chance to compete for a bench role.
  20. I think Bloom will spend big, at some point- maybe not this winter, but he almost has to, next winter.
  21. Maybe he was forced to be someone he was not while in Tampa. If given a bigger budget there, maybe we'd have seen a "different" Bloom. I do think he has different tendencies than someone like DD, for sure.
  22. That's for them to determine. Maybe they would not count any players with less than 1 year of team ownership. Just a thought to "compromise."
  23. I certainly think what Old Red is saying could very well be this winter's plan, but I do think they will make a move, if they think the player is a long term fit and the money is reasonable. (I think Suzuki might fit that role.) I'm not sure I believe the Story rumors.
  24. Could they come up with a threshold between $180-210M but with exceptions granted for keeping your own players?
  25. Wanting to keep Devers long enough expresses a willingness to offer a 3+ year contract. Whether they offer enough to get him is another story. The point is about there being a firm commitment or a mandate not to sign anyone to more than 3 years. There seems to be some evidence they are willing to make 3+ year offers. Again, I am thinking they probably will not offer enough money to get any longer term players, this winter, except for MAYBE Suzuki, but I think it "might" happen.
