  1. They had a good enough roster to "compete" in 2021, but I don't think they expected us to win 92 games and go as far as we did. (I'm not a believer in the playoffs are a crapshoot idea.) I think their number one priority was to plan for 2023-2024, keep the reset in place and see what happens. They gave Cordero and Dalbec (and others) longer looks than most "contending" and spending teams would have done. Now that spending is back on the table, I think they feel better about 2022, but the main priority is still 2023 and beyond. I don't expect us to trade good prospects, this deadline, even if we look like a very strong contender. We may pick up a Schwarber type player or maybe better pen help tan Robles/Davis of '21, but I still don't feel like we have gone "all in," yet. BTW, I have explained my breaking down of competitiveness vs high competitiveness philosophy.
  2. These guys have a longer plan. I don't think they expected 2021 to be so good. I'm thinking they both need to get to 2023 and 2024 to get a real feel for how good they are. This next winter will be very telling, as we lose some top talent and top salaries, too.
  3. Kinda says it all.
  4. We had him for 6 years. I don't see adding 2 years as being called "long-term." One could say the 6 years were "long term" to begin with." A 2 year extension is not long term, IMO. I'm fine with you and other thinking it became long term by adding 2 years. It's nice deal, no matter how we word it.
  5. Some red hot starts to the minor league season (note: very small sample sizes) OPS (AB) 2.121 Fitzy (11) 1.915 Hamilton (10) 1.714 Lugo (14) 1.338 Mieses (11) 1.299 Binelas (11) 1.236 Franchy (26) 1.231 Mayer (13) 1.126 Rafaela (13) .970 Jordan (11) .899 Refsnyder (15) Under 10 ABs: 1.467 Howlett (5) 1.458 Cottam (6) 1.278 Bonaci (4) 1.250 Davis (4) 1.000 Jimenez (9) 1.000 Duran (8) 1.000 Wong (4) 1.000 Mejicano (4) .967 Baldwin (9) .900 Hickey (4) Pitching (OPS Against 4+ IP) .192 Walter (5) .227 DHern (5.2) .544 Winckowski (5) .556 Santos (5) .690 Murphy (4) .694 Van Belle (4)
  6. No player should be solely judged on one season, especially with scattered 136 PAs in MLB. He his .931 in 334 PAs at AAA, last year, and is on fire, early this year. I'm not arguing to call him up. I was just wondering about him getting another chance. Will it take an injury to an OF'er or JD?
  7. But, Fitzy can play OF, even CF.
  8. I always felt Houck should close and Whitlock start, but it's a close call/
  9. Out hit 11-5 and still pulled it out!
  10. Someone claims his bat has slowed, too.
  11. Would be nice to bust this open, now!
  12. I'm not sure we can judge him on just 2021, although most of us thought he got more than enough opportunities, last year. The way Fitzy is playing, Cordero might not ever get another chance like '21 with the Sox.
  13. We need another capable starting pitcher. That takes an enormous strain off the pen, and maybe even moves Houck to the pen. That's not to say the pen is fine, as is, but let's not think only the pen need addressing.
  14. What does Cordero need to do to be called up for another chance? (I'm not saying I think the time is now. I'm just wondering.)
  15. Okay! I did not know that part. This is much better. 3 years beyond arb control is nice. I'm still not sure I'd call it long term.
  16. Except this is not really a "long term investment." Didn't Whitlock still have 5 years of team control remaining? 2 pre-arb and 3 arbs? This is really a one year extension and takes away arb year estimating and haggling. Don't get me wrong. I like this deal, but we didn't really add much.
  17. I agree 100%. Had we signed more RP'er or a decent starter, so Houck could be in the pen, we might have 2 wins, right now. Also, 7.1 innings in 2 games has seen some good pen pitching, so far, and Barnes & Taylor were not even available.
  18. For the first start of a season with a very short ST'ing, I would think some context is needed with your "very low" statement.
  19. ..and outspent on the pen.
  20. Pen Numbers, so far: 7.1 IP 4 H 1 ER (+2 ghost runs) 1.23 ERA 3 BB 9 K 0.955 WHIP .160 BA Against .267 OBP Against .320 SLG Against .587 OPS Against It's just 2 games, but the pen has not been even close to the main reason for either loss. Our bats have come alive, early, then poof. Our starters have given up the long ball, too often. Let's hope Houck can right the ship.
  21. Another tough loss. I'm glad we have 160 games left.
  22. I agree, but the pen is not very trustworthy, either.
  23. I'm getting the feeling our farm is going to jump in the rankings, this year. We are much deeper, now and have some real talent at the to, too.
