  1. Not expecting it to carry over and not giving him a chance next year are not the only 2 choices. Not counting on him to start is a good plan. Counting on him to make platoon in RF or LF or DH would be a reasonable plan, as long as you plan for the chance he returns back into a pumpkin. He would have to really suck in ST'ing, or get hurt, to not make the opening day roster. Whether he stays there long, is more debatable. Others have said similar things about Schreiber, and with the volatility of fringe RP'ers being so high, I could certainly see him not staying on the 26 all 2023, but for now, he's got a slot and has to work his way off it. He'll make the opening day 26, too.
  2. Maybe not closer to $400M but likely more than $365M. Yes.
  3. One problem was that they did not even attempt to fill the budget gains after trading Betts and Price. In fact, they cut more beyond them for the 2020 season. Had they kept spending as high as it was in 2019, they'd have, in theory, replaced Betts & Price 9addition by subtraction) with Verdugo and $43M in yearly FA spending. That alone would have doubled winter spending in 2020 and 2021 and added $43M to 2022, too.
  4. Another case shattering the eye test theory.
  5. No, but JD and Nate have very likely seen their better days. I'm not against brining them back, but only at the right cost. I do not think Nate is worth $18M (the QO), and although the risk is mitigated by just being one year, it is a raise over the $17M a year he barely earned over 4 years. I'd love to see Bogey and Devers back, too, but I'm not privy to the longer term spending plans and would not want Bogey back, if it meant we'd not be able to provide enough of a supporting cast to go for a ring in the next few years. Devers is different, because he's younger, and his "window" is wider. In theory, I think I'd rather have Nimmo for $20M x 4 plus Swanson for $20M x 4 than Bogey for $26M x 8 with no money for RF and subtracting from other areas.
  6. A sign that our system is improving and deepening.

  9. Rich Hill wants to pitch, next year, and says he'd like to return to the Sox. I guess a few players weren't turned off by all the supposed clubhouse rancor.
  10. More than $25M and why worth it?
  11. That was the widely accepted thought. I've never seen any evidence to contradict this. The Sox likely figured he'd make more as a FA than their highest offer, and decided to trade him before it got that far. I do not think they upped the offer after Bloom joined the team, so "continuing negotiations" does not seem right, to me.
  12. Players age and decline. You don't get better by keeping everybody out of some attachment to their past glory years. BTW, there are constraints on spending. Just because they are self imposed does not make them some fantasy. We could bring Bogey, Nate and JD back, and they all could decline. There is actually a good chance 2 of the 3 will decline. That's not a winning startegy, unless their cost is still worth it. You know it is possible to replace players we've come to like and still get better. I grew attached to JBJ, but knew it was time to say good bye. I only wish Bloom & Cora didn't pine for him to come back.
  13. The pandemic might have had something to do with Mookie signing for $365M and not closer to $400M.
  14. Certainly some GMs are much better at building farms and finding low cost gems than others. DD's history is not known for quick and strong farm-building. I think the Ben hiring was similar. They weren't in an "all-in" mindset when they hired him, too.
  15. I'd be fine with 34 K's if the OBP and HRs are high enough.
  16. They don't excite me either, but if we end up improving at enough other positions, we may still be fine, and if healthy, this OF alignment should be better than this year's.
  17. I'll always be grateful to Nate, but there comes a time when good bye is the best choice. We can bring everyone back, and why will we be better? We can't even afford bringing everyone back. let alone add enough to get back to glory. This is no fantasy team: it's the Red Sox future at stake.
  18. You owe us, bigtime! (Although the 6-1 vs SEA was what led you to needs us to beat BAL, in the first place.)
  19. Now, let's sweep the other divisional bastards!
  20. IMO, he was let go, because he is not an expert at building up the farm, and that was the plan after going all out from 2016-2019.
  21. Sale was his "boy." The others were here before DD. IMO, DD wanted Betts, but he set a price that all agreed on, and when they knew he wouldn't take it, the plan was to trade him, even before Bloom took over. I don't see how this led to DD's firing. If JH wanted Betts signed over Sale, he would not have allowed the Sale signing. If JH wanted to offer more, but JH said no, why would that be grounds for firing, unless DD called JH a dick or something.
  22. Who drops out of the top 10? Paulino? Walter? Yorke?
  23. I don't see where DD's position was different from others and that it caused his departure.
  24. Hey! We end up 10-9 vs BAL for the season. So much for losing records vs all ALE teams! YEEE- HAW!!!
