  1. No, I don’t “know” about a separate mold. Bloom was only given a fat wallet starting about 15 months ago, so it hard to say anything about a trend or M.O. I’m not saying I am sure he will spend big on a SP next winter, but I don’t think 15 months locks in anything. If you look at 2020, 2021 and even 2022 up to the Story signing, Bloom spent a big chunk of his meagre budget on SPers. We were bitching about him never spending on the pen. We saw that changed, so why not think a change in spending at the top of the rotation might occur, soon?
  2. They did break the mold everywhere but SPer, but you are right. I expected more resources directed at the rotation.
  3. History doesn’t always repeat itself but Turner has been a second half hitter most of his career and was one of MLBs best second half hitters, last year. JD has not always faded in the second half, but he did last year. I would bet against Turner passing JD
  4. My guess is, some crappy team would snag him, depending how he looks in rehab, and whatever time he shows pitching for the Phillies.
  5. Devers has had very similar slumps, almost every year, and if .697 is as low as he gets for 26 games, I'm not going to get upset. I would not ask Devers to do anything he doesn't usually do when slumping. I don't think it is entirely true he swings for the fences on every swing. I think teams benefit from having differing approaches in their line-up. I like his demeanor and calmness at the plate. He reminds me of Manny, who rarely got angry at himself or the umps. I like his approach, as is. Would it work for every hitter? NO.
  6. We've seen several long term deals, counting last March's Story signing- Yoshida & Devers. We've seen more 2 year deals or 1 with option years than one year deals, this season. I think the mold might be broken, next winter.
  7. Jimmy da man, though.
  8. He'd have to clear waivers, first... Not every club will make a selection, but those that do pick a player must pay $100,000 to the club from which said player was selected. Rule 5 Draft picks are assigned directly to the drafting club's 26-man roster and must be placed on outright waivers in order to be removed from the 26-man roster in the subsequent season. Should the player clear waivers, he must be offered back to his previous team for $50,000 and can be outrighted to the Minors only if his original club does not wish to reacquire him.
  9. Not to be. My Bucks and your Celts got beat my Mr. Clutch- Jimmy Butler.
  10. I may have to rethink my belief that we should have an easier time catching Texas than Houston and Baltimore than the Yanks. The second place team from the ALW might be too hard to pass, no matter who it is. BAL may have lost Mullins, today, and are still a couple games up on the Yanks, but with all the Yanks out hurt, maybe setting our sites on them as the number one target makes the most sense. Of course, Sox fans don't need an extra reason to hope the Yanks lose, but when they play BAL, HOU or TEX, I think we may need them to lose for us to have the best chance. One week could change all this, or course.
  11. Another winter "near miss" for Bloom, apparently... The Mets and Red Sox each “pushed hard” to sign Willi Castro this past offseason, Darren Wolfson of SKOR North reports (Twitter link), but the utilityman chose to sign a minor league deal with the Twins. The move has nicely paid off for both the player and the team, as Castro has hit .258/.324/.452 over 103 plate appearances for Minnesota, with two of his four home runs coming in today’s win over the Blue Jays. Castro’s versatility has also been a boost to an injury-riddled Twins club, as he has seen action as a shortstop, second baseman, third baseman, and in all three outfield positions. -MLBTR
  12. Kavadas has 8 HRs in May. His OBP is at .400, again. Some doubted he could do this at the AA level, and it took him a while to adjust, but he may be ready for AAA, soon.
  13. Garza might be close. If anybody takes on part/most of the remaining salaries or Kluver, Pivetta or Bleier, we could deal them for nothing but salary relief. Freeing up more budget space for the deadline might be helpful. I still have Ort ahead or Sheriff and Garza on my DFA list.
  14. According to SPs, Reyes has no options. DFA’ing Reyes or demoting Valdez makes sense when Story returns, but doing it for Duvall leaves our IF depth thin. When is Arroyo due back? Valdez may be demoted for him, leaving 2 infielders without options remaining when Story returns.
  15. Logan Allen pitched a gem and CLE beat BAL. Stroman pitched a one hitter to beat the Rays. HOU is losing. The Yanks play SEA, tonight.
  16. I do, too, but the question might come down to losing Tapia for good vs keeping Duran in the system but at AAA. I prefer Duran in MLB but keeping all options has advantages, too. DFAing Reyes and keeping both sounds great but we’d severely limit our IF depth.
  17. Let's see where Volope is when trade talks begin.
  18. One point that might affect the choice might be who plays 2B, when Story returns. My guess it will be Kike, but they could uses a Valdez/Arroyo platoon and use Kike in the OF as much as possible with some play at 2B. If Kike is viewed more as an OF'er, that would change the L-R dynamic of the OF: LHP: Verdugo FT RF Yoshida LF/DH Duran AAA? Tapia Traded? RHB Duvall CF/LF Kike CF Refsnyder LF/ some RF It's not so lopsided, anymore.
  19. I hate days off, and we've had a lot, recently. No more scheduled days off for a while, CORA!!!
  20. Let's assume we stay with 13 pitchers and 13 everyday players and everyone is healthy. I'd go with... McGuire/Wong Casas/Turner Kike(OF)/Arroyo Story Devers Yoshida/Refsnyder Duvall/Tapia Verdugo I'd prefer trading Arroyo and maybe Tapia and Reyes (DFA), but I think Duran & Valdez sent to AAA. C: Wong & McGuire continue as is 1B: Casas v R and some L/ Turner v some L 2B: Kike near FT (CF some games) SS: Story FT 3B: Devers FT RF: Dugo FT CF: Duvall vs most L and all R (Kike some) LF: Yoshida vs all L and most R (Duvall some) DH: Turner v all R and some L No starting roles: Ref/Arroyo/Tapia
  21. Some Sox 2023 Numbers Pro-Rated to 162 games: .455 81 283 Duvall .303 21 104 Yoshida .242 42 142 Devers .292 15 66 Verdugo (120 runs) .297 13 85 Duran .265 19 63 Turner .243 18 62 Valdez .286 5 86 Refsnyder .243 21 55 Wong .200 21 56 Casas .235 13 67 Kike .136 28 76 Chang Pitching IP W-L Pitcher 188 17-6 Sale 185 6-12 Crawford 179 10-13 Houck 178 17-17 Whitlock 172 10-10 Pivetta 171 14-9 Bello 158 11-11 Paxton 122 7-0 Winckowski
  22. Agreed. It would be "a lot of money for a meh pen arm," and would not be given out. He needs to prove he's worth $5.5M in the pen (unlikely) or work his way back into a 4.50-4.75 SP'er, this year (perhaps more likely but not anything I'd bet on.) I think we save some money by non-tendering Pivetta and not giving Kluber his option. (BTW, no buyout on Kluber's option was telling.) We can see a massive addition by subtraction in 2024 with no Kluber, Pivetta, Brasier, Bleier and Ort. Who we add will be the points of debate.
  23. Doubling down on this is going to keep this running for a few more pages.
  24. Yes, Duvall hits RH'd, but he's got one year left, and our OF is overloaded with lefties. I really like Tapia, and if Duran can snap out of this funk, what's not to like about him, too. Duran has options, but if it comes down to Tapia v Ref, I'm keeping Ref. When Story returns, the RH'd option in the OF increases and does make keeping Ref somewhat redundant, but I gotta stick with our wRC+ leader from 2022-2023- better than Devers, Bogey, JD, Dugo, Yoshida and everyone else. Yes, smaller sample size, but he started more games vs RHPs than LHPs in that sample size, so it's not tainted by that.
  25. Plus, we are clearly weaker vs LHPs, so he is a high need player in that respect.
