  1. Tanaka meanwhile threw one straight pitch in his first 7 pitches--for 2 easy outs--but a lot of sliders, cutters, sinkers, etc.
  2. We are down because the Yankees love ERod's fast ball even more than he does.
  3. Tanaka of course is using his full repertoire, which means that Rodriguez is officially a one legged man in an ass-kicking contest.
  4. Fastballs, fastballs, and more fastballs. Serve them up you piece of s***.
  5. Yankees love his fastball even more than ERod does--all three hits off that stinking fast ball. Now with the damage done he is throwing breaking balls but none are in the strike zone. Another fastball and a sac fly to CF. This of course also lies at the feet of Leon and the pitching coach. They all love his fastball way too much.
  6. I like Betts in 4th because he is good protection for Ortiz batting 3d. Plus he is second on the team in rbi's with 104 and second in dingers with 30. That said, I would not be opposed to moving him back to the top if it will help him snap out of this slump. Ramirez might be hot, but last night he was had in 3 strikes with men on 1st and 3d.
  7. Don't agree on career because he is so young and is having his breakout year as we speak. The past is irrelevant in my judgment.
  8. Me, I leave Betts in the lineup from here on out and probably keep him batting 4th to protect Ortiz batting 3d. Ortiz had several IBB's earlier in the season, but none since Betts moved to #4. I think Betts is our one and only five tool player. He has 13 assists to 1 error and leads the team by a bunch in SB's and in runs scored. He also leads the team in hits and total bases, is second in home runs with 30 and 2d in rbi's with 104. And he plays smart, focused baseball. Let him work through his slump.
  9. Nope. His OPS's are great (.870 and above) when he bats 6th, 7th,8th, or 9th and are lousy (under .700) when he bats 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th, or 5th. Most of his at bats are in the 6th and 9th positions--OPS .872 in 6th and OPS .970 in 9th. JBJ has 30 rbi's in 129 at bats when hitting 9th, 34 rbi's in 199 at bats when hitting 6th. He has 7 rbi's in 87 at bats when hitting 5th.
  10. To me our one big liability right now is youth/inexperience. We have a decent to good rotation--see moonslav's stats for the 2d half of this season--and a bullpen that's rounding into shape. The lineup, while inconsistent, outscored everyone else in MLB this year. Waiting in the wings are both Benintendi and Moncada. In other words, I don't think DD needs to make any great overhaul of the roster this offseason. Of course, we could also try to get the great Jacoby Ellsbury back here to replace JBJ in CF. 3B is an issue, but hardly a disaster.
  11. We'll be fine tonight because only two kinds of pitchers give us problems--lefties and righties.
  12. Right now Tanaka is definitely earning his pay.
  13. It looked to me as though Gausman's fastball, 2 and 4 seam, had some movement. As I said on the game thread, he threw several right down the middle but still got guys out with ease.
  14. Pretty much agree with all you said.
  15. I whined a lot during the game, but I have to say that fastball, which he used a lot, gave everyone fits. Then he would throw a slider in the dirt for the 3d strike. The worst time was when we had men on 1st and 3d and Ramirez K'd on 3 pitches. Our 2, 3, and 4 hitters were hitless. I'm not sure, but I think Bogaerts hit the ball hard twice but Machado made solid plays on both of them. Also interesting to me: we have 5 righties in the lineup and they had 3 of the 4 hits/singles.
  16. I would have been one of them but honestly was reluctant to second guess the FO. I certainly never expected Porcello to be this good.
  17. Tanaka tonight. Another shut out?
  18. Porcello showed me a lot tonight. He gave up that early dinger, but never buckled under and went 8 innings. I think Price is our ace, but have to admit Porcello is also a good choice--and a better choice for the Cy Young. This was a big game, and Porcello delivered.
  19. I honestly can't be sure. You can read the article yourself at espn. Jones says explicitly MLB is a white man's game. Beyond that is conjecture on my part because the Bryant article reads as though he trying to provoke agreement, from JOnes and others, with his notion that white owners want to keep MLB white.
  20. Whatever Gausman was throwing, especially the fast ball, our guys just could not hit. Four singles. And lots of fastballs down the middle that were missed or fouled off. Porcello pitched well.
  21. With men on 1st and 3d, Sandy Leon gets 2 fastballs right down the middle and swings and misses both of them.
  22. Meh. Jays are 3-7 in their last 10 games. Orioles are 6-4 as are we.
  23. I might be the world's leading advocate for throwing changeups, sliders, etc mixed in with the fast balls. But tonight the Orioles seemed to hitting Porcellos breaking balls with gusto. That pitch to Trumbo is the first inside pitch the ump has called a strike. He's giving them outside stuff, but calling the inside ones closely. Nice 1-2-3 for Porcello.
  24. Right now Guasman has our guys mesmerized.
