  1. I like Moreland at 1B and JBJ on the bench too. I think Hembree has good stuff, but lacks command and, in tough spots, confidence. He walked two guys last night after getting 1-2 counts. And that balk spoke volumes about his state of mind. But I would still rather have in the bullpen than Johnson. I wouldn't mind seeing Poyner back, for that matter.
  2. The only viable defense for keeping JBJ in CF is that the Sox have won games with him out there. I disagree completely that a great outfield can compensate for a mediocre infield. What compensates is the great hitting by the top six guys--sometimes 5 and sometimes 7--in the lineup. JBJ and both catchers can't hit spit, and Nunez so far is subpar for him. It is false to say the Sox have been "scratching out runs" this year when they are 2d in MLB in runs scored. I think the law of diminishing returns will overtake him this year and maybe this spring. His WAR ratings for the last five years, 2014 (when he was our regular CF) to 2018, have been and are-- .6 2.2 5.3 2.8 -.3 Oh, and I would take Devers and his "horrid" defense over JBJ every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
  3. CF. A perfect fit defensively, plus he is a .900 OPS hitter.
  4. The Yankees came into last night as borderline invincible and could barely squeak out a 3-2 win with their ace on the mound against Pom, who has struggled this year. Tonight we have the edge with Porcello, but Tanaka can be tough. We'll see. If it's tied in the late innings, I think the Yankees have the better bullpen. Maybe a lot better.
  5. Moreland is likely to play tonight, and one assumes JBJ sits and Leon catches Porcello.
  6. I like Moreland at 1b, Hanley at DH, JD in LF, Beni in CF, and Bradley on the bench, but last night we had three lefty bats in the lineup and they struck out 7 times with 1 single, so I'm not so sure Moreland was going to turn the tide. We got 2 runs off Severino, which is about par for the course and lost the game because of the bullpen. This game was way closer than it should have been with Pom going up against Severino, a complete mismatch. Between them, Vazquez and JBJ left 6 guys on. The other 7 hitters left 8 guys on. The bottom of the Sox order continues to be a problem even though Nunez had 2 hits.
  7. Second longest game thread of the year, the longest being the Yankees game we lost when the benches erupted, as did talksox, after Bogie got spiked and Kelly plunked the miscreant. There are no good losses, but Pom was definitely a plus last night, and, really, so was the lineup that scored 2 off of Severino with help from the guy who relieved Severino. Hembree blew it, but Kelly wasn't that impressive either. Devers error did not hurt, but his bat did.
  8. You betcha, and before the game I predicted he would get killed by that Yankee lineup.
  9. The hitting coach says JBJ is close, but I sure don't see it. I think Swihart probably is a better hitter than Vazquez, given enough at bats, but I don't think he was a better choice tonight. I too would have liked to see Moreland out there, Hanley at DH, JD in LF, and Beni in CF with JBJ on the bench.
  10. I predicted a blowout and could not be happier to be wrong. A lot of good things in this game. It was great we tied it, but I honestly thought before the game that the Yankees had the better bullpen, and they sure did tonight. Theirs gave up 0 walks in the 3 innings, and our gave up 3 in 2 innings.
  11. Scratch away. I blame Hembree for choking big time. He walked two guys he had 1-2 counts on.
  12. Truly one of the great insights from this game. Cora is hanging on by his fingernails as it is.
  13. Do you? Vaz had a very hard hit single tonight while Bogie and Devers just flailed away at the ball. Swihart has a lower OPS this year than Vazquez. What I will agree on is wondering why the heck Swihart is on the roster and not playing when literally everyone else is.
  14. I say again, Vaz called no pitches tonight. They all came from the bench.
  15. One more shot. If a loss, a great game except for Hembree who absolutely choked, walking two guys on whom he has 1-2 counts. Plus the balk. Plus the incredible amount of time between pitches. Can't forget, though, that all the pitches are being called by the dugout.
  16. Boy, did Kelly a great a break. Hard hit but right to Hanley.
  17. Rested Sox bullpen self destructs.
  18. Is this a Sox bullpen disease? First Hembree losing two guys despite 1-2 counts. Now Kelly loses 1 despite and 0-2 count.
  19. Yankees have a pretty good bullpen. Still, a way better game than I expected.
  20. Hembree melted down immediately after the double. But he seems to have this special ability to get a 1-2 count and then walk a batter, which he did twice in a row while committing the balk.
  21. He cannot handle pressure. And boy does he need to speed up.
  22. Hembree will not be rushed. A pitch every 3 or 4 minutes. And it cost him. He forgot where he was.
  23. I'll be honest--Hembree would not have been my choice for the 8th. He has good stuff, but he doesn't use it well.
  24. Exactly. That's what I saw too.
