    Yes and no. Cora does like to plan for the whole season, but most of his decisions deal with the here and now--what lineup to use, what sequence of relievers, when to pinch hit, when to pull a pitcher, etc. I think he blew it in ST, pure and simple, because his rotation so far stinks and shouldn't. But he also said his bullpen would be fine, and they have been, mostly. He as much as DD gave Swihart a slot over Leon, and Swihart already has 3 errors at C.

    We're kind of in May already. Last year's team didn't lose their 8th game until May 1. People forget that last year we needed that 17-2 run because the Yankees caught up to us in May. You middle of May could be right because maybe it will take that long for the rotation to get their mojo back.

    Bring on those rattlesnakes, I double dare ya. The thing about a small sample size like this one is that it's the only one we've got right now If you want to swing back to 2018 and tell me how great we were a year ago, I'm with you, but will remind you 2018 was successful in part because the Sox went 17-2 in the first 19 games and didn't take their 6th loss until April 27th. The Sox got their 6th loss in 2014--the year after winning the WS--on April 10th. All that said, I continue to believe there is no way this year's model won't get to the postseason. Too much talent.

    Porcello ® vs. Godley ® First things first: this sucker starts at 7:10 EDT, and it's not a school night. Bad as Rick was/is (ERA 13.50) , Godley is right there with him (11.81). The Sox have a horrendous run differential of -19, but Arizona's is -13. However, they are 3-4 (all road games) and we are, oh, yeah, 2-6. And how many lefty bats can Cora count on? I see six: Beni, Devers, JBJ, Holt, Moreland, and Swihart. I don't think it's time to rest Mookie, JDM, or Bogie.

    Not sure how a MLB manager kicks butts in this day and age and just 8 games into the season. The horrible outfield gaffe yesterday was just one of those things. Mookie's attempt at 3d was born of trying too hard and not thinking quickly enough because it was an instantaneous decision once the ball dropped in. As it was, it took a perfect play and throw to get him. How do you kick butts to get better hitting? Anyone? Anyone? Ditto fixing bad starts by our rotation which everyone thought would be gold.

    Focus is definitely the right word because I think it has to be hard to maintain over 162 games of interminable lengths.

    I'd rather have moonslav predicting an 11-0 run than that dipstick max saying 5-6.

    FIRE & DESIRE is such b.s. because it's completely undefinable and way too much of a catch all. In fact, Betts's running error last night was, if anything, too much fire and desire--which, by the way, I think he still has plenty of. I think it was in Seattle that he tried to make a catch on foul fly/liner that had him crashing into a wall, but he slid at the last moment to avoid injury. To me fire and desire works better in football and basketball, but baseball depends so much on technique to hit those corners from 66 feet while throwing the heck out of the ball--or simply to hit a round ball with a round bat squarely.

    Sure. When Lewis and Clark went out west and met some real Indian chiefs, they told them to go to DC and check out the guy there. Of course, by then it was Jefferson and Washington had died, but, yeah, our Presidents were once also Indian Chiefs, sort of. And some of the real Indian Chiefs did in fact make it to DC.

    Target on Oakland--it did indeed start out as coastal terrace prairie and oak woodland. No longer. Less population than Huntsville, AL. Seattle was named for an Indian Chief--just like Washington was.

    So far the OP is borderline prescient. It's never too early to guess at the number of wins. Guess is an especially apt word because right now the Sox look fully capable of finishing dead last in the AL East. Given last year's stupendous season and the return of just about everyone important (except Kimbrel, whom I never liked because he was such a prima donna), that seems impossible. Until you watch the Sox right now and especially yesterday. I mean, bring on the clowns, already.

    Actually, I did know that. Chicago was intended to make it easier for the big customers to come calling at Boeing headquarters, but they don't make no planes in Chicago. The body and heart are in Seattle. I think Boeing is still trying to find where the heck they left their brain, to say nothing of their conscience.

    Back to a realistic appraisal of this year's Sox. Despite my griping, this should be a really good team because the only agreed-upon weakness is the bullpen, and they have been great in the first 8 games. We have a solid gold rotation, however, that is looking like unpolished brass, a lineup that's actually a linedown (ooh I like that ), and a defense that bad enough to give pitchers nightmares despite those gold gloves last year (besides, Kinsler's gone).

    Actually, I'm fine with inexplicable--bad juju. San Francisco is a great name, but Oakland? Depressing. Seattle is a good name, but it's the home of amazon and maybe the most perfidious and unconscionable corporation in America today--Boeing. Ok, so maybe all the sellers of opioids come first.

    All this crap about a west coast trip makes it sound like Magellan trying to sail around the world. The truth, I believe, starts somewhere in ST when actually winning a game was clearly the furthest thing from anyone's mind. It's ST, so who cares? All we have to do is get some swings or pitches in, do a little infield, maybe play some golf, and the regular season will take care of itself. To be honest I'm somewhat sympathetic to that approach if only because the 162 game season is an unbelievable grind. Whatever the cause of this bad start, the last thing I would blame it on is the horrors of having to play in Seattle and Oakland. I mean, come on.

    I laid it on so thick I was sure no one would miss my real intent. Right now the Sox stink.

    Well, today’s game certainly allayed my fears about a slow start to the season. Oh, the Sox lost of course. That was almost a given. But I loved our enthusiasm for going for that extra base in the 9th and the complete avoidance of a collision in right center field in the 4th inning. With that combo of zest and just plain smart baseball, the Sox are going to win their share of games.

    Highest payroll in MLB and our Sox only have 3 things they don't do well--hit, pitch, and field. Bring on the clowns.

    Nope. He threw a gopher ball to the same guy who homered in the 3d and he hit it deep. Yes, it was catchable, but ERod threw a very hittable pitch.

    I not only am getting a whiff, I said it on another thread. This team is better of course, but they sure aren't playing that way. It's kind of like they're still playing at Fort Meyer and getting ready for the season to start.

    I think Cora has got to learn not to trust ERod when he puts the first two men on--especially the first one he had him 0-2 and walked him--with no one out, it's a close game, he's already given up runs, and he's thrown 60 or more pitches.

    Les incompetents. A matched set--hitting, pitching and fielding. Time for Casey Stengal to come onto the field and ask, "doesn't anybody here know how to play this game?"
