    Actually, my argument is that maybe Hernandez is "taking a bullet" for everyone else. Maybe nobody wants to lead off or maybe no one is suited for it. Too much pressure. So the other 8 hitters benefit by not having to lead off. I completely agree that Hernandez's stats are not at all what you want leading off.

    Fascinating discussion on the batting order, so I hope I'm not disrupting things too much by pointing out that the current Sox lineup (actually, lineups) leads MLB in runs scored and OPS. In other words--and prepare yourselves for a shock--it's entirely possible that Hernandez leading off is a plus not a minus. Leadoff is always a tough slot, and I think moonslav has said the 2d thru 6th slots are more important than leadoff.

    My concern is with the computerization of MLB as depicted in the movie Moneyball, as demonstrated in every game by very specific shifts for each batter and in how bullpens are employed. Computers told one of the managers in a 2019 WS game to pull his starter after 6 innings regardless of how well he was pitching. O judgment! Thou art fled to brutish beasts, And men have lost their reason. That quotation doesn't quite get it, but my point is that baseball is marching toward the dehumanization of the game.

    I like the comments above from Bellhorn04 and TylerD. Despite Richards' 6 walks, 1 HBP, and 1 WP and Taylor's lousy 9th inning, it was a good game to watch.

    Jays have the lowest team ERA in the American League, so this loss is entirely on Richards.

    No lie. When my wife drops by to just check on the game, the Sox usually rally, especially during the earlier streak. Last night she stopped and watched Bogie hit the 3 run dinger. Tonight I begged her to drop by, and right after she did Bogie hit another dinger.

    You know, it's just possible the Sox bullpen isn't awful. And my goodness what a contrast with Richards. In the most recent 13 innings they have given up 1 run.

    Completely bush league at bat by Dalbec. Looks at two strikes and swings at one a mile outside that might have hit him in the foot. About on a par with Arroyo's.

    Looking back, I have to wonder if Cora wouldn't have been better off starting a reliever to give Richards more time to warm up. I mean he had an HBP that was no where near the plate and a wild pitch that was just as bad--as well as 6 walks. Pretty lousy pinch hit by Arroyo who couldn't hit that 85 mph fastball. First he looked at two right down the middle, then swung and missed at the third. All fat pitches.

    There's got to be a reason why Porcello's 2020 salary was just $10M and he was still so bad that nobody wants to sign him as a free agent. Never did like him, myself. Good mix of pitches, but all hittable in part because he just never learned how to keep the ball low. To me his signature, this-is-who-I-really-am season was 2017. In 2016 he got the Cy Young Award, and in 2017 he had the same number of starts, 33, but his ERA jumped up from 3.43 to 5.53, for which he was paid $20M.

    I don't like Richards one bit. But I gotta hand it to him for not only getting to 1b, but for stretching to get the 2d out. Holding the Jays to 1 run is a fantastic save by Richards.

    I like 6 and 3 mostly because of the 6, which saves the bullpen. But the game is changing. Managers don't want to overextend their starters arms. More than that is the dreaded, perilous third time through the batting order. I seem to recall that in the 2019 WS one of the managers, whose team lost, said after the game he pulled his pitcher--who was pitching brilliantly--after 6 innings largely because he decided to do so before the game. I thought that manager was imbecilic, but just about everybody else on talksox disagreed. So, if 6 innings is the new complete game or tantamount to it, then a lesser number of innings makes sense as a "quality start."

    I use the NOAA map, which says what you say except that to me it seems to be showing the bad stuff moving NNE, which could bypass the Fens. A late start is fine with me.
