  1. I used to not like Maddon because of the sneaky stuff he pulled. But now I'm beginning to like him. That was such a great move to get rid of Quintana.
  2. Nah. Joe Maddon worked that particular piece of magic by pulling Quintana.
  3. Thanks, Joe, very much. You have given the Sox top of the order new life because, no doubt, your computer told you to never, ever let a pitcher go thru the order 3 times. Joe Maddon ties it up with a 3 run dinger by Devers!!!!!
  4. So, 1 out, 1 on, and we are back to the execrable top of the Sox order--so far, anyway. Me, I would have left Quintana in, but the all-seeing, all-knowing Joe Maddon is bringing in a fresh arm, who promptly got screwed on the sinker.
  5. Bottom of the order comes thru again. Chavis can be expected to K, but Devers too? And no help from the 3, 4, 5, and 6 hitters either.
  6. Still a good at bat, 11 pitches, by Gonzalez.
  7. He's always had a good arm and not much range--perfect for LF at Fenway. We've seen him make some good throws from RF too.
  8. Today we are seeing the old Chavis, the one who deserved not to start the season in Boston. That said, I think Quintana has pitched well despite the hits by Gonzalez, Plawecki, and Arauz.
  9. 7, 8, and 9 hitters get the first 3 hits, then 1, 2, and 3 hitters crap out. With Chavis it's expected, but not Devers.
  10. Baloney. Chavis is an embarrassment. So too are Chavis and Devers at bats with a man on 3b and no outs and then one out.
  11. Eovaldi covers 1b nicely.
  12. Meanwhile, Quintana looks every bit of a MLB starter. He doesn't have Eovaldi's heat, but he has what Eovaldi doesn't have: good breaking stuff and command.
  13. Absolutely not. Set up or closer, you need 2 good pitches, and Eovaldi doesn't even have 1. I am exaggerating of course because some days he does have good stuff.
  14. Well, that's certainly something to shoot at--a 4 run deficit.
  15. A couple more runs, and Eovaldi's ERA will go over 5.
  16. All four hits off fastballs. The one out on a slider. The HBP on the splitter.
  17. OK, maybe good grief Nate today.
  18. Ok, splitter not working.
  19. Wow. Eovali mowed 'em down in the 1st, so now he wants to shake off his catcher--and then HBP.
  20. Chavis is back!!!! Three pitches and a K. Mr. Reliable.
  21. Gotta go with you on this issue. When jacksonianmarch says the Sox are in dire need of an ace, he is thinking like a Yankee fan who loves ownership spending tons and tons of money. As moonslav reminds us, the rotation is doing their share in both innings pitched and results. The bullpen, except for Barnes and probably Ottavino, is a little dicey.
  22. So they say. And very few leadoff hitters say they don't feel that pressure.
  23. Statistically, I think your strong conviction is on firm ground. There's a well known college basketball statistician named Ken Pomeroy, and he includes a stat called "luck" to explain why a team does or does not win close games that season.
  24. Sale still doesn't have a changeup, but I think he is the most professional pitcher I've seen throw for the Red Sox. He has great stuff, good command, and does a great job fielding his position, going to 1b on the grounders to the right, etc. ERod used to be notorious for not covering first on time.
  25. Funny thing about the pressure of leading off. I agree it's real and daunting. But you can really only lead off once in a game--in the first inning. Thereafter, almost anyone can lead off the next inning.
