  1. Eduardo Rodgriguez (L) vs. Zach Wheeler ® Definite edge to the Phillies, but last night we had the pitching edge, a better record, etc, and almost didn't win, even with Barned in for the save. Baseball is like that. You gotta play the games, which is why guys like us have become addicts. OK, maybe not addicts. Maybe connoiseurs of the fine art of our national pastime and the only sport that Ken Burns thought worthy of 9 segments. So today allow me to introduce you to a somewhat different flavor in lineups, one with piquancy rather than robustness: Kike Hernandez 2B Danny Santana CF Rafael Devers 3B Christian Vazquez C Hunter Renfroe RF Marwin Gonzalez SS Bobby Dalbec 1B Franch Cordero LF Eduardo Rodriguez P No Bogie, no JD Martinez. Day game after a night game. and a whole lot of baseball ahead of us.
  2. He's going against Wheeler, who is tough. But you never can tell because you gotta play the games.
  3. Vazquez once again catches Barnes in the 9th when he wasn't the starting catcher. Good job by both of them under pressure. Great catch of Dalbec's throw by Bogie. I just don't buy this stuff about how terrible the Phillies are. They win half (48%) their games, which means they are always a threat to win, which is what we saw tonight. I despise Bryce Harper and am delighted he is in a real slump, but that won't last. Tomorrow the Phillies go with Wheeler, and the Sox send out Eduardo Rodriguez, so a sweep ain't gonna be easy. Meanwhile, the low-down, no good, rotten Rays--who, it has been said on talksox, aren't even as good as the Jays--are on a 9 game winning streak and 1 game behind the Sox. But you know what's neat about that? They should be in 1st place but aren't. These Sox are tough.
  4. Phillies got clobbered last night, but tonight they played the Sox tough despite having to start Howard, who started out tough, got shaky, and had to leave after 68 pitches. Am I the only one on this thread who thought the bottom of the 9th was nerve-racking?
  5. What announcers? I'm listening to WEEI and they say he's been horrible at the plate and lousy in the field, which is true. Are they Fox announcers saying how great Harper is? If so, it shows they are fools because he is vastly, vastly overpaid.
  6. Game. Guts ball by Barnes. Love those knuckle curves.
  7. Horrible, horrible call by the homeplate ump on the swing and miss which he called a foul.
  8. This ump is giving nothing close to the Sox pitchers.
  9. WEEI good commentary on that K by Ottavino--that the K pitch was a fast ball with a lot of break, which it was--96 2-seam sinker. Same pitch gets Bohm.
  10. Herrera, Bohm (PH for pitcher and play 3B), and Marchan up in the 8th. Ottavino and Barnes for the win.
  11. Fast ball down the middle, fouled off by Kiki.
  12. Gonzalez, 4 for his last 36, singles sharply to RF and Plawecki barely gets to 2B.
  13. No question the strike calls have favored the Philly pitchers tonight.
  14. WEEI guys talking up the Sox "great bench" tonight, which of course hasn't been used. moonslav, you listening?
  15. Hernandez done good despite the HBP and the run scored. Another tough game.
  16. Ump still not giving Eovaldi any calls and plenty to the Phillies pitchers.
  17. Fox interviewed Richards with a split screen and the WEEI guys made no complaint.
  18. Well, they do lead MLB in attendance and probably have pretty good TV ratings. As I said on another thread, in his first season in Philly, Bryce Harper significantly increased their attendance.
  19. Bye, bye Howard. 68 pitches.
  20. Radio announcers griping about the split screen. I agree.
  21. By the way, Eovaldi getting that walk notwithstanding, that 2 run rally was thanks to me. Right before the Sox came to bat, I put the radio on my iphone which connects to my hearing aid. That one change in routine made all the difference. One of my absolute favorite recordings is Ella singing Max the Knife.
