  1. Pivetta (3.86) vs. Valdez (2.25) tomorrow, so, given the overall weak defense, weak pitching, and weak hitting, a sweep seems likely.
  2. June swoon that got a head start on May 31. The Sox Road Warriors of April and May are becoming the Sox Road Worriers.
  3. JDM, Bogie, and Devers have all stunk in both games at Houston, at least so far. But, heck, the pitching and defense are what have hurt the most. Sox, so far, would need 6 to win this one and 12 to have won last night.
  4. Worthless freaking infield. Worthless. JDM, Bogie, and Devers ain't helping much on offense either. moonslav may have been the first to prophesy, "beware the month of June." If you are an old Sox fan, you know this Sox phenomenon called the June Swoon.
  5. By all means do so. This was just one game, one in which the Astros clearly had the better starter.
  6. My bad, especially for someone who prides himself on spelling.
  7. Irquidy vs ERod, on paper at least, was/is a total mismatch. So winning today would be an upset.
  8. Looks like Irquidy is going to get ERod off the hook by shutting the Sox down.
  9. He seems to me to be throwing as hard as ever. What missing last year might have caused is the loss of pitching skill, the ability to throw tough pitches to hit. Plus he has always been inclined to be a slow starter, needing a lot of pitches to get through the first inning or two or three.
  10. "Seems to be up and down lately?????!!" His ERA is 5.47, which, especially in a year when pitching is dominating, tells me ERod is up, down, down, down, and down. Then repeat.
  11. This could be the perfect game for ERod to stink because Irquidy so far is literally unhittable.
  12. Irquidy continues to throw first ball strikes, I think to every Sox batter, with impunity.
  13. Irquidy, meanwhile, can throw consecutive fastballs right down the middle and get a called strike, and foul.
  14. 4 runs and 6 outs for ERod. I could be wrong, but I think doesn't have a single sharply breaking ball in his repertoire. Cut fastball, fastball, and a slightly breaking changeup are about it. I cannot remember the last time I saw him throw a curve or slider. Lo and behold, finally a slider, out of the zone, swung on and missed for a K.
  15. It's only 2-0, but easily the most one-sided pitching "duel" I've seen this year. Sox lineup looks helpless, Astros lineup confident.
  16. Very first pitch swung at outside the zone--and another GIDP. But not without giving up the 2d run.
  17. I could be wrong, but I don't think the Astros have swung at a single pitch outside the strike zone.
  18. Both hits of sinkers, which ERod likes to throw almost as much as opposing hitters like to hit it. And a single off the changeup.
  19. I met Bob Feller not long before he died--on Memorial Day in downtown DC. He was enormously proud of his service in the Navy in WW II and had every right to be. Same day I met Robert Duvall, who had served briefly in the Army and was proud of his dad, a retired Rear Admiral who was buried at Arlington.
  20. There is nothing like a GIDP to get ERod back on track.
  21. Yankees now 5.5 back, losing their 4th straight while the Rays won their 5th straight. Sox now need to win their 4th straight to stay 1 back of the Rays. Come June, everything could change of course.
  22. Yankees have now lost 4 in a row, Rays have won 5 in a row, and the Sox have won 3 in a row. Need this win to stay 1 back of the Rays.
  23. I too don't hate the Yankees and in fact relish the rivalry, which over 120 seasons has definitely favored the Yankees. Two of the oldest cities in America with very different appeals. More to the point, I think the Rays are the better club and threat to the Sox and hope that--and I know it's still May--the Yankees can be a spoiler.
  24. Fewer pitches per inning. Ahem. Agree on all of course. Meanwhile, the Rays remain hot and are about to take their first in Yankee stadium--3-1 in the 9th.
  25. Terrific win! Marlins left between 6 and 7 thousand guys on base, scoring 1 of them.
