All right!!!! Thunder got us 2 big wins, now moonslav can get the Sox back on track. Houck probably got the word and came out confident. 2-0 after 2!!!!

It absolutely was not. Yes, certainly, we all hate the Sox to lose, but they lose about 40% of the time, so it isn't that big a deal. The game was well played. Ray pitched great and went 6 innings. The Jays, who can hit, hit Richards hard, which is hardly a surprise. And Rios and Workman saved the rest of the bullpen from having to pitch. Good news is that Verdugo looks exactly like the guy we saw earlier this year and made a terrific play getting that guy out at 3b. Kike had a bad game, but he is entitled. Dalbec is not entitled, but that's another story. If you are Bloom or Cora, you have to be thinking the Sox need another starter for the stretch run. Richards and ERod both now have ERA's over 5, and Perez and even Pivetta are shaky as well.

Need the win tonight. Moonslav 59 and mvp 78, listen up! One of you needs to start tonight's game thread. And the rest of us need to be rooting for the Yankees against the Rays. Our Sox need help.

I'm delighted it's not 9 innings, but no way would I pay for that. Also no way the Jays did not deserve this win.

Ray pitching the 6th means the Jays manager thinks his guys can win the next two games as well. Their bullpen will be more rested. Plus of course Ray continues to inflict real pain on the Sox lineup. Bobby Dalbec can celebrate after this game. He fouled a couple of pitches off.

Meh. I've been to games at Fenway twice and hated it both times. Horrible sight lines. Lovely ballpark on TV, though. Plus the hot dogs and beer at home are a whole lot cheaper.

I would have Richards out there until his arm fell off because I don't think the Sox can catch up in a 7 inning game.

Worth noting too is that those dingers by the Jays were just hammered. Nice grab by JDM.

Thanks. I wasn't paying attention, except to realize that Ray has been very tough today when he has needed to be. And it has made absolutely no difference which Sox hitter is at bat.

Ray owns the Sox today. Beyond question. The Jays could still take this series, 2-1.

Definitely. Plus he took away at least two pretty good strikes from Richards. On the other hand, Ray has been tough whenever he has needed to be in this game, and that's the real problem.

Not quite right. I said at least twice on this game thread that credit goes to Vazquez for keeping Richards out of trouble. I've said that on other game threads as well. I've also pointed out he has the 2d best DWAR, +1.2, on the Sox. What I don't like about Vazquez is he leads MLB in passed balls by a big margin. I also think he gives up too many wild pitches and isn't nearly as good at throwing out baserunners as he used to be. His hitting is OK, but down from previous seasons. And he's getting heavy.

This is what I wrote earlier today. Houck at 7:10 this evening is probably our best hope for a win. Those who are clamoring for a great-hitting first baseman are missing the point. The Sox need a decent starter--as hard as those are to come by without selling the farm. Richards, Perez, and ERod are all suspect. Yesterday against this same team, Pivetta gave up 4 in 4.2. Verdugo and the Jays bullpen saved that game for the Sox--and the Sox bullpen too of course.

Richards curve a little up and Thunder's hero just broke the dadgum baseball. So Richards can't seem to move off the spot designated for those who are likely leaving the rotation (or the Sox).

Ray getting more calls than Richards.

Watching Dalbec and Chavis go up against Ray is painful--except when Bobby got that BB. Ray now has 4 K's and those two have half of them. 3d time thru the order coming up with Kike leading off the 5th inning. Meanwhile Sox pitching needs to keep it at 3-1.

The Sox still have 4 innings and 12 outs, but Ray is tough and the Jays bullpen probably won't have to do more than 1 or 2 innings.

That's the difference between Richards and Ray. Fastball right down the middle gets absolutely pounded if it's Richards'. No more than a lazy fly or a foul if it's Ray's. Fair is fair. Vazquez definitely gets some credit for that dinger because he called for the fast ball.

Fenway looks nice. Nice crowd too for a Wed afternoon.

I'm not a Vazquez, but am more than happy to give him some credit when the pitcher is doing well, and so far that is the case with Richards today. Just 3 innings so far, but still.

Now he's throwing changeups, and they are working.

Maybe Ray's fast ball rises. Whatever, it works. That one was right in the middle and JDM couldn't do much with it.
