  1. Agree--both starters are probably done. That makes it a battle of the bullpens.
  2. We certainly saw that with ERod's changeup. Tough pitch to master.
  3. His OPS doesn't count on nights when he is pitching this well. And so far--4 innings, granted--the first six Sox batters are hitless with 4 K's and 1 BB. Both hits were singles by #7 Verdugo (in a slump) and #9 Chavis. Yes, Montgomery did get lucky when Bogey hit the liner straight to the SS with the bases loaded. Also when Bogey's long drive went foul.
  4. He's thrown at least one splitter (for a strike) and he has 2 fastballs, one of which breaks down.
  5. Perhaps, but he has been extremely valuable in the bullpen and relieving puts less stress on his arm.
  6. The NOAA map says there aren't that many rain clouds in the area, so I guess the Yankees chaplain wrote out a weather prayer: rain, rain, don't go away, stick around for just one more day.
  7. Houck is throwing great, no question: 8 K's and 1 unearned run in 4.2 innings. But he did give up back to back walks to start off the 4th. And let's not forget that he is going against the Yankees weakest lineup this season. Montgomery is going against a much tougher Sox lineup which he has tamed. They came out like lions and tigers--see all the dingers they hit in their last 2 games-- and have been converted to pussycats.
  8. Sloppy, sloppy field which is good for the Yankees at bat and bad for Houck and the Sox defense.
  9. Season to date, sure, maybe he does stink. But tonight he doesn't stink one bit. The reason why the Sox hitters' "approaches" are off is that he is mixing up his pitches and location. His changeup is especially effective tonight against the Sox righty-dominant lineup.
  10. This game is being played like it's in Yankee Stadium, not Fenway Park. We got the rain. We got good pitching by the Yankees pitcher. And we got the Sox lineup not supporting a valiant effort by rookie Houck.
  11. Changeup low and outside of the strike zone, so of course dipstick Vazquez, the master of passed balls, the chubby catcher who wants to steal bases, pulls the ball for an easy ground out to SS.
  12. Completely disagree. At least against the Sox good hitters, Montgomery has them by the short hairs. He mixes up his pitches and pitch locations.
  13. Too many times this season a Sox hitter gets a ball on the outside corner and pulls the ball weakly for an out.
  14. No Sox pitcher can pitch to the outside corner the way Montgomery has against JDM in this at bat. 4 straight on the outside edge, but 2 just missed.
  15. Kudos to Houck!!! He definitely stumbled with those 2 walks, but recovered beautifully. Vazquez, on the other hand, pisses me off. Does he lead MLB in passed balls? Is he thinking about stealing a base when he's catching?
  16. Vazquez gave up that run, pure and simple.
  17. Houck pitched beautifully in the first 3 innings, but now has walked a couple. As for the lineup, their problem, very clearly, is Montgomery.
  18. WEEI guys say he isn't really stretched out yet. But we'll see.
  19. What do you mean???? He hit one deep but foul and line out on another.
  20. Good at bat by Bogey, but no cigar. Houck and Montgomery both have thrown 47 pitches in 3 innings. But one must assume Montgomery will stay longer.
  21. This is 2 visits to the mound this inning. How many are allowed?
  22. A walk to Devers actually makes sense with Bogey on deck. Even loading the bases.
