  1. Of course, ERod then gets two huge K's largely with his fastball, primarily above the zone, which is the best place for it.
  2. Erod still loves his fastball fully as much as opposing hitters love it.
  3. Got it. Bad idea to have your best hitter at bat with 2 men on base. What was Cora thinking? The problem isn't the order in which they bat, it's what they do when they are at bat. Last night, down 3-2 in the top of the 7th, Duran leads off with a single and later steals 2d. Meanwhile, the heart of this year's lineup, Devers, Bogaerts, and JDM, all strike out. And you want to rearrange the deck chairs on the titanic.
  4. Well stated, as always.
  5. Love it, especially your pursuit of silver linings. I also agree that Bloom's decisions were good. I have my doubts however, that Sale, Schwarber, Arroyo, Houck, etc can right this ship. Read on. 1. We have no specific dates on when they return (except for Houck), and the need, the very urgent need, is right now. 2. We don't know 2021 Sale will be as good as 2018 Sale, that Schwarber can play 1b and hit AL pitching, that Arroyo can stay off the IL while playing hard, that Houck can pitch more than 4 innings, that there won't be further injuries to key players, that JDM, Vazquez, etc will emerge from their slumps. 3. These past five games/losses suggest there is more wrong with these Sox than is rationally fixable. All five Sox starters are suspect. And the lineup just might be. In the top of the 7th last night, for example, the Sox were down 3-2, and Duran led off with a single and later stole 2b. But the next three batters, the absolute heart (Devers, Bogaerts, and JDM) of the Sox lineup this season, all struck out.
  6. score one for vegasbob.
  7. Still a good team with just four weaknesses--hitting, pitching (rotation), fielding, and baserunning.
  8. That said, I think some of the sports/venues are silly, like golf, tennis, basketball, and baseball, all of which have better venues elsewhere. Beach volleyball is a joke. I do like the equestrian events, track and field (of course), decathlon, pentathlon, wrestling, swimming, canoeing/kaying/rowing, wrestling, weightlifting, and probably some others I've forgotten (like archery and shooting/marksmanship).
  9. Not much of a rotation and not much of a lineup. Sure looks like 5 losses in a row, all of them earned.
  10. Come off it. Yes, of course, there's going to be political actions by some of the athletes, but they are also the best athletes in the world competing in a venue that means a lot to them.
  11. Duran leads off with a single, and Devers, Bogaerts, and JDM all strike out. This team is in big trouble.
  12. All things considered, a good 4th inning by Richards. Two infield singles, then an 9 pitch walk because Candelario fouled off a bunch of pitches. Then the K, then the sac fly, and finally a ground out with a good defensive play by Cordero.
  13. 5 straight fastballs by Richards: single, ball, ball, strike, fly out.
  14. Finally, in the bottom of the 3d, the WEEI guys notice that all 4 of Richards' pitches are working. Then of course he throws his very popular fastball right down the middle--producing a sharp single to RF.
  15. The mystery to me is how much Vazquez and Richards seem to love his fastball, which is the exact same pitch opposing hitters want to see. I get his concern about his curveball, now that he can't doctor it up, but even it is a better pitch than that fastball. Tonight he looks like he has four no-baloney pitches: fastball, curve, slider, and changeup, so no reason for half of them to be fast balls.
  16. Good job by Richards on Haase. Fastball out of the zone, fouled off. K with the slider plus curve and changeups. He needs to mix his pitches to be effective.
  17. Richards throws too many fastballs, period. Dinger by Cabrera, age 38, opposite field. WEEI guys say Richards is on a "have a dinger" streak.
  18. The rotation is a fright, top to bottom--even Eovaldi. The hitting isn't--Sunday night the Rays closer threw nothing but sliders and still kept that 1 run lead. But the optimists have a point. Still plenty of baseball yet, and this team has bounced back before.
  19. I like our chances tonight, even with Richards.
  20. Sometimes you want to go Where everybody knows your name, And they're always glad you came, You want to be where you can see, Our troubles are all the same;
  21. Remembering the OP, I guess it's time to remind ourselves that even after 4 losses in a row and realizing our rotation top to bottom is suspect, it's still worth it to root, root, root for the home team. They've brought us a lot of great moments and could still bring us more.
  22. All this talk of Schwarber surprises me because right now he seems like a bad fit: he can't play even though the Sox badly need his bat right now; he's an outfielder on a team that needs a first baseman who can hit; he's not a starting pitcher, which is far and away the Sox biggest need right now. Indeed, the one thing he seems best suited for is representational. He represents an intent to kind of, sort of, maybe improve the 2021 Sox.
  23. I'm inclined to agree with this for one simple reason: much depends on the pitcher on the mound and how well he is pitching in that game and against whichever hitters are at bat in clutch situations.
  24. Berrios, now a Jays starter, went 6 today vs. KC and gave up 0 runs. The Sox have a 3 game lead over the A's for the top wild card slot, 5.5 over the Yankees for the second slot and 6.5 over the Jays for the second slot.
  25. Can there be any doubt that the Rays are better than the Sox?
