    A day game, so I understand why this is a short game thread. That said, it's been a heckuva game so far and, indeed, a heckuva season. I am not discounting the weak defense, but am saying these Sox have done enough good things to merit our approval. Plus I do think Cora has an uncanny touch with who to play and when.

    Bogaerts thought that was going to be a slider. Good pitching.

    He was the starting SS with the Angels when they released him. I also like his approach at the plate. So, not only do I think the Sox should keep him, I think he keeps that job. No one else, not Kike and certainly not Arroyo, has done as well.

    Looks like all three of us thought that was spectacular. So of course it was. I just saw the replay. It was better than spectacular.

    Agree. We haven't seen that kind of flip to start a DP this season.

    Between 2 stints with the Sox, Iglesias played for 4 other teams--Tigers, Reds, Orioles, and Angels.

    Certainly that applies to the Angels, who released him.

    In comes the great one for Seattle--Sewald. How great? 2 games ago he came in and gave up back to back dingers to Bogey and Devers.

    Agree. His defense and his hitting. Of course, in the improvement category, he doesn't have much competition. Most Sox lineup players seem to have gotten worse.

    Two cutters in the absolute middle of the plate--fouled off. Still, Dalbec did get a walk.

    A couple of pretty good pitches by Richards, but the calls went to the hitter. No matter. That curve looks pretty good.

    That's also a good description of your mental acuity and knowledge of the game.

    Not so horrible a call. Bogey was hoping for a walk because he knows he can't hit this guy. Besides, a leadoff walks wasn't going to help much if you happened to watch Devers and then JDM K. Gonzalez has demonstrated a decent mix of pitches and excellent command, which is why he is getting the calls. He's a pitcher. Houck is a thrower.

    On the other hand, Houck just tore thru the Seattle 5, 6, and 7 hitters like they were helpless--and while sticking to fastballs and sliders. Command does affect the outcome of pitches thrown, and Houck seems to have hit the corners well in the 4th.

    All 3 runs against Houck are earned. That was a stupid, unnecessary throw by Renfroe. I also didn't like that Devers made no attempt to stop that ball.

    Works for RP'ers because they only face hitters once in game. Whitlock has a much better assortment of pitches than Houck.

    Just tuned in to see Houck stink it up in the 3d. He seems to be a 2 pitch wonder--fastball and slider--or have I missed his excellent curve and/or outstanding changeup and/or devastating splitter?

    I have never been against shifting players to a new position, but I do trust management--you know, the guys who have won 4 WS after the 86 year drought--to make those decisions. And guess what? Devers has owned 3b since 2017 and Bogey SS since 2014. As for Crawford, he plays for the Giants, is 34 to Bogey's 29, and isn't nearly the hitter Bogey is--and probably isn't the hitter Dalbec (who is 10 years younger and a whole lot cheaper) is.

    And that's the way it is, Wednesday, September 15, 2021 with the Sox in a 3 way tie for the 2 AL wild card slots. With Seattle starting lefty Gonzalez, Schwarber gets the nod over Verdugo, who has really struggled against lefties this year. As for the defense, right now I think Dalbec is as good at 1b as anyone else on the Sox and certainly better than Schwarber. Actually, I think this is as good a defensive infield as the Sox have had this season, but LF and RF are clearly suspect even though Renfroe has that rifle arm which very, very recently won a game for the Sox by getting 2 outfield assists, one of which was one of the best throws any of us have seen.

    Completely agree the defense goes up and down just like hitting and pitching although I would argue that hitting and pitching are much harder to master and more likely to incur slumps. That said, my point remains: this is still the same motley crew the Sox started the season with. Preferred outfield was and is Verdugo, Kike, and Renfroe--with their collective strengths and weaknesses--and the preferred infield is Bogey and Devers on the left side, now mostly Dalbec at 1b, and almost anyone at 2b. I would argue quite strenuously that Dalbec has actually improved at 1b, which I thought was inevitable given he came up as a third baseman.
