    Duran's defense is negative, but he sure has been useful leading off. Given his sitting out the Toronto series, I think we can credit him with more than his share of chutzpah.

    Since this thread is actually about injuries, allow me to say that Kike Hernandez has had a setback, whereas Arroyo, Duran, Refsnyder, Cordero, Dalbec, et al are healthy. Except, of course, that Duran is a conscientious objector to vaccinations can't play in Toronto. So for now it makes sense to see those healthy guys as keepers even though none of them is a sure thing.

    These days a strong bullpen seems to be the sine qua non for success. On the other hand, I think our bullpen has done better than I expected and think Houck just might have solved the closer problem. So I'm inclined to agree don't overspend on the bullpen. I just looked at the top closers in MLB, the guys with the most saves and good (under 3.00) ERA's. The two best seem to be Jorge Lopez (Orioles) with a WAR of 2.0 and an ERA of 0.75 and Clay Homes (Yankees) with 2.0 and .52. Lopez's salary this year is $1.5M and Holmes's $1M.

    SoxProspects says that Seabold has good command and four pitches fastball (92-95), slider, changeup, and a curve--but that none of those four is "great." So he relies on command/location and mixing his pitches effectively.

    Wacha will have the standard five days rest for tomorrow. Schreiber likely to be the closer. Duran also out.

    Terrific win. Hill a little lucky, giving up 4 BB's but getting a no-baloney quality start, but I couldn't be happier for him and the Sox, who have scored the 2d most runs in the AL (after the Yankees) and have the 4th best ERA after the Yankees, Astros, and Rays. One game at a time.

    Not really. The same guy who allowed the three Sox baserunners, then turned around and got two weak grounders by Bogey and Verdugo and a 3 strike K by Story. The Cleveland infielders, drawn in by the manager, made perfect throws off both grounders. If the Sox had pulled that off, we would have said, "well done," not "boy are those Cleveland hitters lousy."

    Last night Houck the Great faced the 6th, 7th, and 8th Cleveland hitters with a 4 run lead.

    They have indeed. I have to confess that I'm kind of on uppers because I did not think the Sox would win the first two in Cleveland. Plus I think Francona is good. So I'm giving them--Cleveland--credit if only because the Sox are three outs away from what I think would a huge win. This season all wins are huge.

    Jeesh. Are you oblivious to the fact that their are two freaking teams on the field and that the Cleveland pitcher and his infield were perfect once the bases were loaded? I'm disappointed too, but some credit has to go to Cleveland.

    Signature at bat by Story. Despite the hype on his rbi's, he hates to swing a first pitches right down the middle, but doesn't mind swinging at pitches out of the zone for strikes 2 and 3. Well done, Cleveland and their manager. Bogey, Dugo, and Story were all pathetic.

    Good play by Cleveland. Bases still full, but 1 out now. Bogey failed miserably to move the runners.

    Next thing you know, Cleveland will use two guys to push the baserunner off the base. Or, if only one is available, he'll his foot to kick that hand off the base. Terry has some gall calling for a relook.

    Based on what we just saw, Duran stealing 2B, I'm pretty sure Cora told Duran something like what I just said.

    Schreiber has the right stuff to close. Houck has done so with a lot of guts, but he doesn't have the right stuff. I'm inclined to defend Duran on that attempted steal. He was out, and I hated that. But up to then the Sox were totally incapable of batting in a runner from 2b, plus Duran is fast, the Cleveland catcher made an absolutely perfect throw to get Duran. Man on 3b has a way better chance of scoring than a man on 2b. Then came the deluge of JDM, Bogey, and Verdugo to get 3 runs and the lead.

    To remind: I am a huge, huge Sale fan, an enormously professional and dedicated pitcher. So, regardless of how much of the 2017 and 2018 Chris Sale he still has, he is still an asset. The question is, what suits him best?
