  1. Boy oh boy have you misread the posts on Dalbec. Everyone agrees he is tearing up AAA for Worcester with fantastic numbers (OPS over 1.000, for example). However, the problem is that the Sox currently have not one but two first basemen, and their third baseman (I think Dalbec is playing 3B) is Devers. In addition, it has been pointed out that Dalbec has hit AAA pitching well before, but could not hit MLB pitching. Plus he has defensive issues (at 3b and 1b). I don't especially like Casas because he's slow and I think overweight. On the other hand, he is in fact hitting MLB pitching and his fielding is OK. And he's 23 (vs Dalbec's 28).
  2. Probably not significant, but right now overall team salaries seem to be the obverse of success on the playing field-- Rays and Orioles have the two best records in the AL but are ranked 27th and 29th in team salaries. Cincinnati Reds salaries are ranked 25th, and they lead the NL Central (such as it is). Arizona Diamondbacks salaries are ranked 21st and they lead the NL West. Mets lead MLB in salaries but are in 4th place in the NL East. Yankees are 2d in salaries and 3d in AL East. Padres 3d in salaries, 4th in NL West. Phillies 4th in salaries, 3d in NL East. Dodgers 5th in salaries, 3d in NL West. Jays 6th in salaries and 4th in AL East. Braves, 8th in salaries, and Rangers, 9th in salaries, seem to know what they are doing. Braves have easily the best W-L in the entire NL and the Rangers have the 3d best W-L in the AL and lead the AL West by 5 games.
  3. I'm not defending Bloom, who would probably admit Kluber (whose WAR is currently -0.8) was a mistake. I'm alluding to Cora's ability to get some use out of Kluber.
  4. I kind of disagree. Yes, it seems absurd. On the other hand, those 3 innings did in fact “save” other bullpen arms. Kluber was useful.
  5. Interesting excursion into Dalbec territory: no good slot for him at Boston; plus he probably won't be able to hit MLB pitching even though he is tearing up AAA. Meanwhile, the Sox are winning--with good hitting and pitching and even defense--without Story, Sale, Houck, Chang, Schreiber, et al. Why aren't those guys missed more? In game 1 vs the Twins, Duran led off and hit three doubles, one that drove in two key runs, and was promptly removed for a pinch hitter, Refsnyder, because the Twins had a lefty on the mound. Ref walked, and Dugo hit a 3 run double to seal that win. And last night, game 2, Duran didn't even play while the Sox won 10-4. Nor did Reyes, the current fav of talksoxers to play SS (until Chang or Story returns). Instead, it was nasty Kike, the people's non-choice, who was part of a very nifty double play, home to 2b to 1b. Did I forget to mention that Crawford got his first win (5 IP, 0 runs) since April 9? Kluber went 3, giving up 4 runs, and got credit for a save!!
  6. Astounding play by Wong to start that double play by throwing to 2d base. I doubt that that particular double play--home to 2d to 1st--is made even once per season in MLB.
  7. He's tied for the team lead in K's and you want more K's? His OPS for April was .585, for May was .766, and for June so far is .894--and you want to fix his approach at the plate?
  8. Worth repeating: another terrific win. Great to see the bats go to work against a pretty good starter. And Crawford's 5 scoreless innings were just as great.
  9. Yep. Joining the dud liberation movement.
  10. Stunning stats. The pitching's been pretty good too--and I'm pretty sure Raffey didn't throw any.
  11. He was pretty good for the Giants, especially in the postseason.
  12. Not by name, but the question was asked--why Kike at SS and not Arroyo? Do you think the Sox 3d base coach made that decision?
  13. Thank goodness you were never part of the Sox front office. They wouldn't even let JBJ be the regular centerfielder until they were sure he could hit. He was the opening day centerfielder in 2014 but didn't get to stay there August. Sox have always preferred hitting over defense.
  14. Very good point. The Sox would be ahead in this game if they only had a good SS out there. We must remember this day, one which will live in infamy. Let's face it. Cora is clueless. I think I even saw Kluber on the mound. Will this foolish tinkering never end?
  15. Five righty bats vs. righty starter Ober. This will teach Duran not to keep hitting doubles.
  16. Excellent laydown.
  17. Didn't you just post that Wong and McGuire have hurt the Sox pitching this year? Also, I have said repeatedly I like McGuire. I just like Wong more. As for Casas, I agree with most people that he seems to be the answer at 1b. In fact, I think that DWAR of -0.8 might be bogus. He's a little weak on grounders and doesn't have much range, but I like his fielding of throws to 1b. Plus his OPS was .585 in April, .766 in May, and so far in June is .894.
  18. My bad. Just 2 days ago too. I was just thrilled it wasn't 4 runs in the first inning. After those 2.1 innings, Murphy went 2.2, Pivetta 3.0, and Martin 1.0 for 6.2 innings of shutout relief in the first game of the doubleheader vs the Yankees.
  19. Well put.
  20. Actually, I agree. In fact, I think his height makes him a better target for throws to 1b--plus he is good at stretching for the ball.
  21. Wong's DWAR is +1.1, tied for 2d best in MLB. You may not like him, but I do. Casas's DWAR at 1b is -0.8, tied for 3d worst in MLB.
  22. Completely agree. I thought JD transformed the 2017 team into the juggernaut they became when he joined them in 2018. What fantastic addition! But, as you say, the trend was in the wrong direction, plus I got tired of him swinging at those low and away sliders. I am of course astounded at how well JDM has hit for the Dodgers this year, but I'm not at all unhappy with Turner. Am I the only one who noticed Turner has the higher WAR (so far)?
  23. About a month or so ago I thought Crawford was the best candidate from the bullpen to go back to starting. Now I'm not so sure. But I sure don't want Kluber back out there. Pivetta would be better than Kluber, but right now he's pretty useful coming from the bullpen. Ort would be my absolute last choice for starter, but he wasn't half bad last time: 4 IP and 2 ER.
  24. Agree. With Duvall back, Cora has tons of outfielders: Duran, Duvall, Dugo, Refsnyder, and Yoshida. Three bat lefty and two righty. I continue to be amazed whenever Yoshida plays LF (vice DH) because the other four are all better defensively. Of course, if Yoshida does DH, then Cora's got a problem with who plays 1b, Turner or Casas.
