  1. Reread what I wrote. I'm no expert, but I do know Cora has tons more expertise than any of us. It's that simple. Nobody on talksox ever managed squat. Nobody on talksox has access to the information Cora has. The criticism of Cora is all about frustration that the Sox lost a game. On another website long ago and far away, every single time the Sox lost it was Francona's fault. He coulda/woulda/shoulda done this or that.
  2. We don't know whose idea the stealing was. Weren't you one of those claiming Cora should have used Jansen for the save? The Sox have 13 pitchers, of whom just one is a lefty--Joely Rodriguez. So, the way this talksox board operates, if Bernardino had made the roster, the boo birds would have complained every single time a lefty batter got a hit: "Why didn't that idiot Cora get a lefty pitcher on the roster?"
  3. Cora didn't lose the game last night, not even close. Reyes made the error to bring in the first run and Abreu the error that definitely contributed to the 3d run because it allowed the runner on 1b to get to 3b. Without Abreu's error, Mariners on 1st and 2b when the next guy hits the grounder for a very likely GIDP and a win. As I've said before, these game threads are infested with idiots who don't know diddly about managing a baseball team. Did I forget to mention that Cora sent McGuire in to pinch hit for Wong and that McGuire doubled?
  4. What is point of this thread when all of talksox ignorant? Jansen unavailable Saturday night, but everyone condemned Cora for not using him.
  5. Jansen unavailable. Stiff back. Cora made other good moves to win game. Ignorance rampant on talksox.
  6. Jansen not available, stiff back.
  7. Absolutely right. Kirby was pretty good last year too--31 starts, 190 IP, ERA 3.35. I just got a little rambunctious because, well, it's another season. One of my favorite scenes from Fever Pitch is when the season tickets arrive. I'm pessimistic like most of us this year, but right now there is a glimmer of hope because both Bello and Pivetta had good starts, the defense looks pretty decent, and the lineup is supposed to be better. Someone else said 5-5 on this road trip wouldn't be too bad, and I agree.
  8. I almost forgot. Congratulations and many thanks to MVP 78 for our first win of the season! In fact, it was actually a good win with a good start by Bello, almost decent relief, and lots of hitting by the Sox. Now let's see if Moonslav can get us our second win.
  9. Only the hoi polloi indulge in sarcasm. That was irony.
  10. Not so. The catcher has by far the best view of the strike zone, and he agreed with the ump's calls. If he had complained to the ump about those called strikes, you would have a case, but he didn't and you don't. I'm fine with human umps and believe, quite strongly, that a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.
  11. Worst loss in the entire history of Red Sox baseball!!!! Pivetta pitched a gem, and Winck got 2 scoreless innings, but the lineup looked like namby pambies. Cora needs to throw some bats in the showers. What's that word? Lollygaggers! And allow me to single out Duran and his new hairdo. What a wuss. Can't hit a breaking ball to save his life, and he's our freaking leadoff batter. On second thought, maybe the new guy, the GM, needs to throw bats into the dugout.
  12. I was mostly watching March Madness, but did stop in to watch the Sox and Pivetta. His breaking stuff looked wicked and I think his fastball was around 94/95 mph. Plus 6 freaking innings in his first freaking start!!! Back to back good starts by Bello and Pivetta, plus decent defense (except McGuire can't throw anyone out going to 2b). Who woulda thunk? Last night the lineup without Devers reminded me of sleepless in seattle. Just lost.
  13. Thanks. Hard to stay away from talksox when the season has begun. 75 years ago I got the box scores 2 days later in the Stars & Stripes--so I could see what Ted Williams had done. I was not very interested that the Sox were in 2d place. 5 years later I was hooked when we lived in W.Springfield, MA and I could listen to Curt Gowdy call the games--and even though the Guardians ran away with the AL (after the Yankees won 5 straight WS). That fall my dad returned from Korea just in time for the WS, the one in which the Giants swept the Guardians (who I of course rooted for). And Willie Mays made that incredible grab in the Polo Grounds. This season, like last season and the one before, is kind of like old times, but I am grateful for the 4 WS wins of the John Henry era, which now is beginning to look like the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.
  14. Is Kimmi gone? I know she found some posters unpleasant.
  15. How can you say that when the Sox scored 6 runs with Devers and nada without him?
  16. Amazingly comprehensive laydown, thanks. About right, I think--not especially optimistic, as it should not be.
  17. True--and who knew our rotation would be our best area? The 0 is 0, actually.
  18. Without Devers, a miserable Sox lineup. Duran absolutely, positively can neither see nor hit a breaking ball. And why oh why is Dalbec on this roster? He has had an infinity of chances and never delivered. I know, it's early. 160 games to go, but tonight was just miserable. Sox pitching looked good, however, especially Pivetta. Good move leaving Winck in for the 8th.
  19. A fair point, but it actually works both ways. Sometimes the next reliever saves the previous guy's bacon by getting guys out and preventing that baserunner(s) from scoring. I notice Rodriguez did get credit for a hold.
  20. Need the bats, I'm afraid, because Pivetta is suspect. But I said that last night about Bello and was dead wrong. I believe both teams are going with 4 righty starters in this series. Last night Cora started 5 lefty bats--Duran, Devers, Casas, Yoshida, and Valdez, but platooned in Reyes at 2b when I think Seattle brought in a lefty reliever. Valdez was 1/2 and Reyes 0/2.
  21. Nice win. I did watch parts and especially Jansen closing.
  22. Captains Courageous is on right now, 6 pm, on TCM. Terrific movie with Spencer Tracy, Freddie Bartholomew (who's excellent), Lionel Barrymore, and Melvyn Douglas. Based on Kipling novel. Tracy got the academy award for best actor. Freddie plays a spoiled rich kid who becomes a mensch by the end of the movie--thanks mostly to Tracy. Terrific photography of sailing ships off the shores of eastern USA.
