  1. Eovaldi and Sale will at least take the field in 2021 for sure. E-Rod may never play baseball again. Really tough break. The Tony C of the 2020s.
  2. Heh you are right Eovaldi/Sale should be considered for only one slot, as you will rarely have both healthy at the same time.
  3. Best case scenario for the rotation by the end of 2021, barring a free agent signing, I think is: 1. E-Rod (I really hope that he's able to come back) 2. Sale (returns midway through 2021 right?) 3. Perez 4. Eovaldi 5. Houck If Pivetta can force his way into the group, fine, but I'm not sold on the guy. I do hope we make at least one significant starting pitching pick up in the offseason, because the worst case scenario is E-Rod is gone, Sale never gets back to what he was, Eovaldi spends 2/3 the season on the IL, the league figures out Houck and he never makes it, etc. Reality will likely be somewhere in between those two extremes.
  4. I'm wondering who the better signing was, Lackey or Price. Both had very similar careers in Boston. They didn't live up to expectations except for one year, and we won the World Series that year.
  5. I love how you've moved onto 2021 already. I really wonder if Sale will be able to contribute even then.
  6. Coming out of 2018, I was totally serious when I thought that Chris Sale, if he could avoid surgery, needed to switch to the closer's role. I thought his days as a starter were done. And then he got that monster extension; it didn't make any sense. Henry should fire himself.
  7. That would have been wonderful. He'd be back by now, fully ready to dominate the American League.
  8. Sadly Sale has been broken since August 2018 and without Tommy John, I don't think we'll see Chris Freakin' Sale again. I'm actually hoping for TJ surgery at least the back end years of the contract will be great.
  9. Wait, what? Sale likely down for the season? Edit: Oh I see your other thread. Sucks, but not surprised in the least.
  10. Are there concerns about Bogaerts’ health? Saw an article with that title but the link didn’t work.
  11. I don't know anything about his personal beliefs, but I know not everybody can shine in the Boston spotlight (see Renteria, Edgar). When someone does, I prefer keeping them. Beltre was a great fit for the Sox on the field. I was also sad to see Victor Martinez go during that same time period. Of course now I can mourn the loss of Betts, who shined about as bright as someone can here. But I'm also on record as saying if he wants $40 million per year it would be best to move on from him.
  12. I still think the Sox went after the wrong Adrian. Beltre proved he could play here at a high level, yet they didn't make an attempt to keep him, and instead traded Rizzo to get Gonzalez. Man, Beltre should have been our 3rd baseman for the last decade.
  13. I'd probably sign Jason Vargas from that list to a 1 year deal.
  14. According to 2020 MLB free agents by position WWW.MLB.COM Although a number of star players signed contract extensions before the 2019 season commenced instead of testing the open market this offseason, the current free-agent class still included many interesting names. Below, you'll find the list of this year's crop of notable free agents. The list will be updated throughout the available starting pitchers are: Andrew Cashner Jason Vargas Clay Buchholz Marco Estrada Clayton Richard Matt Harvey Ervin Santana I'm holding out some small hope that Hector Velazquez gets his groove back and can help carry the 5th starter role along with Weber.
  15. Apparently these guys are going to be free agents next offseason: Starting pitchers: Corey Kluber (club option), Trevor Bauer, Robbie Ray, James Paxton, Masahiro Tanaka, Jake Arrieta (club option), Marcus Stroman, Jose Quintana Adding one of them seems to be a priority.
  16. I think Andrew Cashner is still available right? Didn't he do well for us once he moved to the pen?
  17. I agree and I think it was a great trade. I'm excited about having Verdugo & Jeter. Connor I know nothing about, but no reason not to be optimistic. I thank David Price for his role in the 2018 World Championship, but I really doubt he had anything left in the tank. I also don't think we had much of a chance of keeping Betts in 2021, so this trade was the best we could make of the situation. But uh, who is our 5th starter?
  18. If we trade Betts & Price and don't get any major league players in return, what free agents are available to plug the outfield and starting pitching spots?
  19. You must not remember how long he takes between pitches.
  20. This reminds me I hadn't checked to see how Kimbrel did last year. 6.53 ERA, yikes!!!! I'm so glad he didn't stay. He turned into a pumpkin overnight.
  21. Yeah after 2008 I thought he was our version of Jeter with better defense.
  22. I think it's reasonable to expect that Price & Eovaldi will make about 20-25 starts each and have trips to the injured list. So of those 20-25 starts, the big question is how quality will they be? I hope that Eovaldi at least will show us the talent he showed in parts of 2018, but realistically the 40-50 starts overall will probably end up around league average (4.10 ERA combined). Sale is the big question mark. I'm really worried he breaks down by the end of April and needs Tommy John surgery.
  23. I love Mookie but my priority is finding young talented pitching, both starters & relievers.
  24. Our lineup last season was 4th in runs, 5th in OPS, and 4th in total bases in MLB. That's pretty good, but the pitching undermined it. 19th in ERA, 16th in batting average against, and 21st in WHIP. So yeah, we're just not a balanced team. But I don't think you can "go for it" just because of the batting. If they'd signed Gerrit Cole we'd be having a different conversation.
  25. I (sometimes mistakenly) size up a team and determine whether it's a winner or loser by May. I thought the 2003 team was a winner. I thought the 2013 team was good but not great until, you know, they started pulling off heroics. But the 2019 team never had the feel of a winner. Sometimes a team becomes a winner mid-season but it's too late, like when Lovullo took over the 2015 Sox at the end of the season.
