I don't think anyone is advocating for the Sox to to spend like Tampa Bay, but, thanks to the luxury tax penalties, there are limits. A solid farm system allows the Sox to spend up to the limit, without going over it every year, and be selective with free agent signings.

Sale is in the running for the Cy Young this year. If he should win, that gets him an extra 2.5 mil next year. I don't think he's going to want to miss a start, just because. If he feels healthy, he's not going to miss more than one start.

Yup, I would think the Cora's input on hiring a hitting coach and the overall team approach to hitting is what he should get credit for. -
