  1. We need to take it to the stinking birds today! Go Sox!!!
  2. That's exactly what it is. Johnson would not be able to start on 3 days rest. Did anyone else see that Marrero and Jonathan Aro are being called up too?
  3. Some more Clay ERA data: In 11 games with the "worthless" Leon catching him, Clay has an ERA of 2.80. In 4 games caught by Hanigan, his ERA is 7.11. I'm a big Hanigan fan, so this is not a knock on him, but obviously, Clay and Leon are clicking. It will be interesting to see what happens when Hanigan returns from the DL in about a week.
  4. LOL "Weird Haircut" Clay does indeed look like an idiot. That being said, since the weird haircut, Clay has an ERA of 2.48 over 9 games. Prior to that, he had an ERA of 6.03 in 6 games. Clay can look like an idiot all he wants if it's going to make him pitch well.
  5. There is plenty of defense. Please point out something that I've posted in defense of the team that is wrong.
  6. Somebody has to defend our team. Yankees fans sure aren't going to do it. LOL
  7. He has been working on it, but as I posted earlier, it's easier said than done. Throwing more fastballs has messed up his release point on the sinker, causing him to leave a lot of pitches up in the zone. He is most effective, obviously, when he can keep the sinker down.
  8. One of the reasons I don't like to bet is that it always seems to come back and bite me, as is happening with Porcello. It's very similar to why I won't have Sox players on my fantasy team. It's a jinx, even though I'm pulling and betting FOR my players. I honestly do not understand how you can bet against them. And frankly, I do think you get more satisfaction out of being able to say you were right then you would from Porcello pitching well, despite what you say. Your posts tell me otherwise.
  9. Of course even a good defense is not going to save him every night, but it will make a big difference. As I just posted in the other thread, if Detroit had even an average, not good, defense, Porcello's average ERA from 2012-2014 would have been 3.74. Put an above average defense behind him, which ours was supposed to be, and the results would be even better. We must also not forget about the advantage that the Vazquez/Hanigan tandem was supposed to provide with their top rate pitch framing skills.
  10. Porcello is having a bad year so far - no one is denying that. Even with that, his ERA should not be 5.61, based on his peripherals. It should be somewhere around 4, and that's when he's having his career worst year. That aside, I think you and others underestimate just how bad Detroit's defense was, causing Porcello's ERA to be consistently higher than his FIP. In 2013, for instance, league average BABIP on ground balls was .245. Porcello's BABIP on ground balls was .260. For a pitcher whose ground ball rate was 55.3% that year, that's like a death sentencs. Also, Porcello's defense adjusted ERA from 2012-2014 was 3.74. If he had an average defense playing behind him during those years, he would look like a much different pitcher.
  11. You are not a know nothing, but seriously, a pitcher's W-L record is almost meaningless, in and of itself. I am so thankful that King Felix won the Cy Young over Sabathia a few years back.
  12. I honestly have no clue what you mean by his BABIP death. If he has a decent defense playing behind him, his BABIP will be fine. See 2014.
  13. I'm not basing anything off of just one year. What I posted in my previous post gives several indications that expecting Porcello to pitch like he did last year is a reasonable expectation. Porcello has not had a good year. There is no denying that. However that does not mean that he will stink for the remainder of his contract.
  14. Again, by looking at his career numbers, you are not taking into account that pitchers do tend to improve as they enter their prime years. Porcello's SIERA in the last 3 years is 4.07, 3.31, and 3.88. And this year? It's 3.99. An ERA that far off of his SIERA is not sustainable.
  15. The staff is currently very bad. There is no argument there. But as I've posted a few times already, 4 out of 5 of our starters have pitched at career worst ERA levels. There was no reason to expect that, not only from Porcello, but also from Masterson, Miley, and Kelly. If the starters were pitching close to their level of expectation overall, this staff would be mediocre, even slightly above average.
  16. There is definitely proof that Porcello has altered his approach though. Regardless of the reason for altering that approach, it does seem to be the reason why he has been hit hard this season.
  17. Going back to being a sinkerball pitcher is not that easy. Throwing the 4 seamer more often apparently messed up his release point, which is causing him to keep balls up in the zone. He has been working on getting that release point back. And yes, I do think he can be a 3.8 pitcher using his sinker more, if he can get that effectiveness back. He did it last year when he had an improved defense behind him, and his FIP has been in that neighborhood. What is so unreasonable about that notion?
  18. This post is a bit of a stretch, in more ways than one.
  19. I was going to mention the same thing, that not many pitchers are pitching at the MLB level at such a young age. Good post.
  20. Actually, I'm not. I'm looking at a 3 year trend in his xFIP, not ERA, and also factoring in his age and what was supposed to be an improved defense playing behind him.
  21. No, career stats are not the best barometer we have. Not for a young pitcher who is entering his prime. Porcello's stuff has been about the same, until this year, and his stuff says that he should have an ERA in the neighborhood of 3.7.
  22. Looking at Porcello's career numbers and saying that he will pitch to those career numbers based on there being there being a sufficiently large sample is akin to expecting Papi or Napoli to perform at career levels with no regard to the aging curve. You can't project a player's performance based on career stats alone.
  23. Losing is always difficult, but I'm not sure there is any discord or deadwood in the clubhouse.
  24. I am not in the camp that wants to trade anyone with the intent of blowing the team up and looking toward next year.
