Yes, I agree that we can make some nice upgrades that won't be very costly. Fortunately, I don't think we need that much. For me, I'd go with a BP arm and a LH first baseman, in that order. I am pretty sure Bloom has something in the works, but if the team made no moves before the deadline, I'd be okay with that. We're getting Sale back, which is about as good an upgrade as you can get at the deadline.

I think most of us are in agreement that he might top trade prospects or go over the tax limit if it's for a move that will help us in the long term. He won't do either of those things for a rental player.

The geek squad is way ahead of you Denny. Believe it or not, this stat pretty much already exists (introduced in 2015), Baseball Prospectus' Deserved Run Average or DRA. It factors in almost anything you can think of, including who is umpiring the game and the weather conditions.

The list of the ways in which ERA is flawed goes on and on and on. Yes, it's a simple stat, but it is nowhere near the best stat for determining a pitcher's performance.

I get the argument either way as well. I don't blame Boone for not playing the infield in. It's interesting that Boone himself did second guess that decision though.

I will trust whatever Bloom does. I'm not opposed to being buyers and sellers, but I am opposed to weakening our pitching depth. If Bloom can trade Richards and get a better starter in return, I'm all in.

I am a huge Cora fan, but his lineups this season have been questionable. That said, they are working. And small sample size notwithstanding, look at what Kike has done recently out of the leadoff spot.

So, the plan is to be able to upgrade starting pitching and possibly 1B with Richards' or Perez' remaining salary, plus get a PTBNL in addition to that? Count me in if we can do that. But if there's a better starter available for that cost, why wouldn't the team who takes Richards or Perez just take the better pitcher to begin with?

Yes, we absolutely need to keep the depth. Some feel that upgrading 1B is a higher priority than acquiring pitching (after Sale and Houck), but I would not give up pitching to upgrade 1B.

100%. For me, it's not about the in game decisions, which, as you know, IMO make little difference. It's all about instilling confidence in the players and getting the ability to get the most out of them.

If it makes you feel any better, I still think the Yankees make the playoffs. I no longer think they will win the division (not that I count them out either), but I do think they'll grab a wildcard.

Perez pitched very well in last night's game. Again, his inability to go deep in most games is an issue, but he will typically pitch well enough to keep the team in the game. Not saying that he has an edge over Richards, or vice versa, just that I wouldn't be so quick to write either one of them off.

I cannot agree with you that ERA is the definitive stat for a pitcher. It is too flawed. That said, I can agree with you that over the long haul, a pitcher with a good career ERA is probably a good pitcher. I don't think that statement is as true when you're talking about a pitcher with a not so good career ERA.

The average HR/FB rate fluctuates from year to year, but it is typically about 10%. Also, HR/FB rate is not a repeatable skill. It's one of those mostly luck or random things. FB rate is a repeatable skill, but not HR/FB rate.
