  1. So much for that idea, huh? Eleven runs so far for the Sox, and counting.
  2. As has been stated many times, WAR, like every other stat has its flaws, and no assessment should ever be made based on one stat alone. If you want the best assessment of a player, or the best comparison of two players, you look at as much information as you can. That said, IF you were limited to using one stat only, WAR would be the best stat to use. It is the most comprehensive and it does give a very good idea of what a player's value to the the team was.
  3. The team is on a mission tonight for Farrell. Nice to see.
  4. Like our other starters, he should be better than what we have seen.
  5. Good to see that Pablo has taken the criticism of his weight gain to heart:
  6. Cherington said that defense would be the top priority this offseason. It looks like JBJ, Betts, and Castillo will get a long look in the outfield.
  7. Rusney! Let's see if Kelly can hold the lead now, for at least an inning or two.
  8. Go Papi! Win this one for Farrell!
  9. This news really sucks. Thoughts and prayers for Farrell and his family.
  10. We are going to have some tough pitching matchups this weekend.
  11. LOL Boring GT mojo! I like it! Go Sox!!! Oops, I probably should have typed all that without the exclamation points, to keep in line with the theme.
  12. Then, that's all I'm doing too, except I was making my own comment about literal versus figurative statements.
  13. Of course he can. He's the last person that needs my help. But I can defend him, just as you can defend iortiz in a discussion that did not involve you.
  14. It sounds like Farrell will be back as well. I do question this coaching staff's ability to properly "coach" these players, but I have no proof that this is where the problem lies. I would not be unhappy if he were fired, but I also would not be unhappy if he were given the chance to fix this mess next season, along with Ben. I really think that the FO needs to be insistent on some of these players putting in some extra work this offseason, either with conditioning (Panda) or working on drills (Hanley). I know they can't force it, but they can be very adamant about it.
  15. The line "I'd bet money on it" or some variation of that is just a figure of speech to convey confidence in one's opinion, not to be taken literally. How often do people nonchalantly say "I'd bet my paycheck on it"? I'd bet that very few of them would actually do it. But you already knew that.
  16. I agree with you on Rodriguez. He is likely going to be in the starting rotation to start the season, and he should be fine. However, if the FO picked up 2 starting pitchers this offseason and started Rodriguez in AAA, I would not complain. At minimum, I really believe the Sox need to pick up a top of the rotation starter this offseason. It doesn't have to be an "ace" necessarily, but a solid #1 type. If that happens, then as you said, the rotation and the depth look pretty good.
  17. There are some who are not going to be happy until Ben is gone, which is fine. I can understand that feeling with the way the team has played 3 of the last 4 years. However, I think it is making some people a little closed minded in terms of moves like bringing in Dipoto. It may or may not help, but at least give it a chance, and at least acknowledge that the FO is trying to improve their talent evaluation.
  18. It does look like a good move. I am not denying my personal bias against Maddon in that previous statement. I cannot stand the guy.
  19. I think this is all true and fine in terms of having one rookie in the rotation. I just think that two rookies (or relative rookies) is too big of a risk. While both of them have looked good, Rodriguez and Owens are largely unproven at the big league level. It's not that it can't work, necessarily, it's just not a gamble I'd want to take. An added benefit of keeping the young guys in AAA to start the season is the depth that they provide in case of injury/underperformance. If Rodriguez and Owens are both in the rotation, who is going to give us quality starts when we need 1 or 2 additional starters?
  20. I'm pulling for Lester, Theo, and the Cubs. It's too bad Maddon has to be a part of that team.
  21. From what I've read, one of Dipoto's main tasks is to re-evaluate and re-assess the talent the team already has, mostly in the minors, to help determine exactly what we have and who should be used in trades.
  22. It can be. He doesn't make the calls in a vacuum. He makes the calls based on input he gets from a team of talent evaluators.
  23. Pencil necked geeks are the best, IMO.
  24. Agreed. I don't recall the exact numbers, but analyses have been done on WAR and it has been shown that WAR works. BP also has its version of WAR, I believe. They all vary slightly in their definitions, but they are all very reliable and valid in terms of describing what has happened on the field.
  25. The FO and Ben are responsible enough to acknowledge that what they have done the past 2 years has not worked. Rather than the continual bashing, give them some credit for bringing in a fresh pair of eyes to help them fix the mess that the team is in.
