    I don't know if you saw the edit that I added to the post that you are responding to, but I'm really not arguing the fact that Moncada might need work on his defense. After all, he's what, all of 19? He's still likely at least another year away from sniffing the bigs.

    I really don't know what the percentage is, but my impression is that the subjective calls are higher than 20%.

    Not only that, but errors are also to some extent a function of the other players on the team. Who an infielder has as a double play partner can make a difference. Who an infielder has as their first baseman can make a difference. How many "errors" does a good first baseman save the rest of his infield? This wouldn't apply as much to a 2nd baseman, but let's say that 2 different shortstops both make 10 low throws in the dirt to first base. One first baseman picks 8 of those throws, while another first baseman picks 3 of them. There's a difference of 5 errors for two shortstops who have virtually done the same thing.

    Yes, it does tell me that he most likely needs to work on his defense. However, his defense might not be nearly as bad as the 19 errors in 63 games suggests. Edit: I really am not trying to argue whether Moncada needs to work on his defense or not. I have not see him play at all, and I have nothing to go by other than what I've read here. My argument is against the use of the stat "error" as a good measure of a player's defense.

    It's not complicating the game. It's enhancing the game by getting a better understanding of what is really taking place on the field.

    Maybe it's a band aid approach, or maybe Pablo is just as frustrated with the way he's played this season as the fans are. Either way, at least he is working at it and making an effort.

    I still think it would be a good idea to trade Pablo for Shields in some capacity, thereby killing 2 birds with one stone. We get our #2/3 pitcher and we open up 3B for Hanley. That being with the expectation that JBJ and Castillo hit well enough to stick.

    I read that JBJ is the first player in Sox history to have 5 extra base hits in a game. Go figure.

    I was just responding to Spud's comment that errors are errors. There are some virtual statues (Jeter) out there that people think are good defenders because they commit so few errors. It's likely that Moncada does have to work on defense, but giving me his number of errors tells me virtually nothing.

    Yes, there are. Not having watched Moncada, I can't really comment on the validity of those errors (the exact reason why we need advanced stats!). I think what is even more deceiving than the player with a lot of errors is the player with a relatively small number of errors because he just doesn't get to many balls. Fielding percentage - phhht!

    People are too hung up on the $9 mil figure, IMO. That amount for one year did not handcuff the team in any way. Keep in mind the idea of more money for fewer years. Was it too much to pay? Probably, but that answer is more of a hindsight answer than not. Also keep in mind the philosophy the FO was going with of that of a groundball pitching staff with what was supposed to be a good defense. Keep in mind that Vazquez was supposed to be behind the plate. All of that figured in, Masterson was a risk worth taking.

    One of the beauties of WAR is that it allows you to compare pitchers to hitters, first basemen to center fielders, and a current player to a player from the 1970s. Again, it's not perfect, but it does a pretty good comprehensive job. Also, even with looking at all the other stats, WAR gives a nice summary of a player's overall value.

    It was great to see the team play so well last night. Several members of the team said they were all playing for Farrell. What a great and inspirational message to send to him.

    Since being called up the 2nd time, his slash line is .339/.373/.518/.891 . His slash the first time up was .230/.260/.284/.544 . Saying this with the usual small sample caveat, that is a HUGE improvement.

    Kelly actually pitched well. Not great, but for him, it was a victory.

    As I just posted, Masterson was a very good pitcher in 2013. He was injured in 2014. Why would it be unreasonable to think that, being healthy again, he could regain his 2013 form? If he pitched anything like he did in 2013, he would have been a bargain. IMO, it was a low risk, high reward signing. It didn't work out, but it was worth the risk.

    I think it's fair to say that the way they pitched is not that surprising. Any pitcher at any time can pitch worse than expected. I think it's unfair to say that they pitched to their abilities. Miley's ERA+ is lower than his previous 3 year average. He has pitched better in the 2nd half, much more like we expected. Masterson was coming off an injury. In 2013, he was a very good pitcher. You would expect a fairly young pitcher to rebound when healthy, maybe not to his 2013 level, but certainly better than what we saw this year.

    Ok, without much thought, my initial reaction when hearing that this was the first time in MLB history that all 15 home teams won was that I was surprised it hadn't happened before. Your post piqued my curiousity, so I did the math behind it, which I should have done before making my above statement. For simplicity, if every game is taken as a 50-50 proposition, the odds of all 15 home teams winning is 1 in 32,768. Let's say that there are roughly 120 days each season when there is a full schedule of 15 games. Mathematically, this should happen once in about every 273 years. So you were right - it was more likely to be another century before this occurred. According to Elias, the previous best record by home teams was 12-0 on May 23, 1914. Good stuff Youk.

    I would have to heartily disagree as well. Not all "errors" are created equally. As SK said, errors by themselves don't say much about fielding.

    If you want a player's stats for any particular time frame, the best place to go is to Baseball Reference, then go to the player's game log. Once on the game log, you can click on the starting date and the ending date that you want, and BR will calculate all of the player's stats for whatever period you selected.     I disagree. The only starter who has pitched to expectations this season is Buchholz. The other 4 have pitched at their career worst ERAs for the first part of the season, thought Miley has pitched better in the 2nd half.
