I didn't say lack of intent was a plus. Would I prefer a player who was playing badly but trying his hardest over a player who was playing badly because he didn't care? Absolutely. Would I prefer Hanley being bad in LF because he is a flake over Hanley being bad in LF because he is a malcontent. Absolutely. Intent does matter.

Of course it's gone wrong. It's gone very wrong. Have I ever said otherwise? Your suggestion that we could have had Cruz and that he would have performed well with Boston is just as hypothetical. You are not dealing with what is, despite stating that that's what you prefer to deal with.

Not naive of you. You have a valid point. It's just like the putrid offense in May really hurt this team, regardless of the fact that they are hitting better now.

If this had happened and Cruz fell apart, I can hear the criticism about why the FO would sign a known steroid user who was obviously only hitting well because he was on steroids. I know it's a hypothetical argument, but you know it's true. To some, the FO is damned if they do and damned if they don't.

This is a great example. It's also a great example of the randomness of baseball events affecting the outcome of games, particularly the close ones. As far as FIP goes, the only things that affect FIP are BBs, Ks, HBPs, and HRs. Bautista's HR would be factored in, but the other hits would not be.

Once again, I am not arguing against the likelihood that Moncada needs to work on his defense. I am arguing against the use of the error as a good stat.

Intention does matter. If Hanley's mind is not in the game because he doesn't give a crap, then that would be a whole other issue in addition to the stinky defense.

Any player is tradeable for the right price. That said, I think Pedroia is worth more to the Sox than he is to any other team. I also think that Holt is more valuable to the team as the supersub than he would be as an everyday 2nd baseman, or whatever position. The idea has some merit, but I can't see him being traded. And I am personally against the idea.

I didn't say it was not his fault. I think whatever position he ends up playing next year, he needs to put in the extra practice this offseason and he needs to work on his focus. I just don't think that putting a player who is not always in the game mentally at first base is not a good idea.

No thanks to signing the known PED user. I'm not naive enough to think that no Red Sox player has ever used PEDs, but signing him and having to root for him would be akin to Yankees fans rooting for ARod. Sickening.

Perhaps, but that doesn't make it a better stat because it tends to "even out". And it might not even out. It's been shown that umpires tend to give better more strike calls outside the zone to pitchers who dominant and who are known for their control, subconsciously, I'm sure. So, missed balls and strikes calls don't really even out. Perhaps official scorers have a similar type of bias depending on whether someone is known as a good or bad defender.

I don't disagree. Then there is also the judgment call on whether the batter would have been safe anyway if the defender did not have a slight bobble. Another thing about the subjectivity of the error call, which doesn't really have anything to do with this conversation but it irks me, is that an error call not only affects the defenders stats, but it affects the batter's stats in more ways than just BA, and it affects the pitcher's stats.

I don't think it's a lack of athleticism that is at the root of Hanley's defensive woes. I think it's a lack of being in the game 100% mentally. I don't think it's intentional on his part.

I was not expecting either Pablo or Hanley to play better than their career norms. However, I don't think it's an unfair or an unreasonable expectation for them to play somewhat close to the level at which they've played the last few years. I can understand both signings. Our offense flat out stunk last year. The FO attempted to address that problem by signing two of the best bats available. I will say again, no, no, no to Hanley playing first base. Please, no. If the FO is truly making defense a priority this offseason, then Hanley needs to play elsewhere. I would rather he stay in LF than play 1B.
