  1. For those who just can't get enough.....
  2. Once again, I don't see the harm in discussing a baseball topic, regardless of whether it's been beaten to death or not. We are debating civilly, for the most part, and are not hijacking any threads or other discussions. Right now, there just isn't much else to discuss. At any rate, I am going to start a separate 'Dead Horse' thread for those of us who want to continue the debate. That way, the rest of you do not need to be bothered by the discussions. Simply do not read the thread.
  3. But he was fired. Does that make him a bad GM? Is it that cut and dry? Is that the bottom line by which to judge a GM?
  4. Only because that someone else we know turned down two opportunities to interview for a GM position and also turned down a position with the Yankees. And those are only the opportunities we know about. He could have been rehired pretty quickly if he wanted to be rehired.
  5. Nice. Take pictures! I don't have a lot of confidence in Hanley playing first base, but not because he's lazy or because he has a bad attitude or anything along those lines. Offensively, I think he will bounce back if he is indeed healthy. Remember, he was an offensive beast before he ran into the wall and hurt his shoulder.
  6. You are probably right that most fans will not give him the benefit of the doubt, and that Dombrowski will not give him a very long leash if the team starts to falter.
  7. OK, my bad. I completely missed that joke.
  8. I'm glad that you don't hate Porcello. There is no reason to. I am encouraged by the way he pitched at the end of last season, and I expect him to be more the guy the Sox thought they were getting when they traded for him.
  9. It is probably not a coincidence. I think Pablo realizes now that even though he's always been overweight, there has to be some degree of diet and conditioning for him to be a good baseball player.
  10. Why? Just because you hate Porcello?
  11. No love from me either. I don't usually begrudge players (like Ellsbury) for defecting to the Evil Empire. That said, Boggs and Damon are the exceptions. It makes me sick to even see a picture of either of them.
  12. @ SoxnCycles - Your signature about Dombrowski being fired by the Tigers brings up a very good and valid point. Thank you for that.
  13. Leake had a better year by 0.1 of a win. Leading up to their contracts, Porcello was the better pitcher. Also, Leake is projected (by Steamer) to have a 2.0 WAR next season while Porcello is projected to have a 2.8 WAR.
  14. No folly whatsoever. In the season leading up to Porcello's extension, his WAR was 2.8. His WAR for the 3 year period leading up to the extension was 8.5. Mike Leake's WAR last season was 1.7. His 3 season WAR was 6. He is also 2 years older than Porcello at the time of their respective contracts. Porcello was the better pitcher. Put another way, Leake received his contract after posting a 1.7 WAR. Porcello posted a 1.6 WAR this season. Porcello would be right in line for the contract that he received, even after pitching poorly last year. Imagine what he would be getting this offseason if he had pitched well.
  15. Pablo has always been fat, yet he has always been a good 3rd baseman, both offensively and defensively. Last year was way, way out of the norm for him. At least he has taken Dombrowski's advice to heart and is conditioning hard this offseason. Keeping the weight off during the season is a problem that he's had, and it's something he is going to have to work hard on throughout the season.
  16. No, he really can't be any worse. And that is the reason why I don't blame a certain unnamed GM for the way the team played last year. No one would have expected Sandoval to go from being a 3.1 WAR player to being a -2 WAR player, even considering normal decline. I think he will be about a 2.5 WAR player this year.
  17. I am more inclined to believe that Farrell is disregarding the data than I am to believe that the Sox are not collecting it. However, I don't think his disregard of the data is something that he was doing in a negligent manner, but rather out of necessity. Farrell's strength is as a pitching coach. I don't believe he would warm up relievers unnecessarily if his hands weren't more or less tied. I questioned Farrell's ability as a manager last year. I am not defending him as one of the greatest managers ever. I am just willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on whether he's a terrible manager or not until after this year.
  18. I am pretty sure Fangraphs does its team projections based on the Fangraphs depth charts. So yes, they have an AAAA guy currently slotted at 1B for the Os.
  19. I know that BP's and Davenport's projections are updated several times throughout the season as more data is added and new players are signed to teams. I'm not sure how often Fangraphs updates, but I'm guessing they update throughout the offseason as well.
  20. The Pablo for Shields trade made all the sense in the world to me. The word on Pablo is that he has worked extremely hard on his diet and conditioning this offseason. He will not be nearly as bad as he was last year.
  21. I'm not convinced the Sox are done either. However, Dombrowski might very well wait until midseason to see how things shake out. He will not be shy about pulling the trigger on a big trade during the season once he has identified what the team's needs are.
  22. I would sign a #2/3 starter, but I would be very hesitant to send a package of prospects for one.
  23. I personally don't understand what the problem is if I and some others want to debate something baseball related, even if it's been debated before. That's the purpoe of a baseball forum, after all. At least it was something to talk about when not much else is going on.
  24. First of all, I highly, highly doubt that the Sox are not keeping track of how many times relievers were warming up or how many warm up pitches they threw. That to me sounds extremely unlikely for any team. It's quite possible that Farrell had pitchers warming in the pen more often than other teams. I think most of that was due to the weakness of our staff. It's a difficult call when your starter starts struggling early. You don't want warm up a reliever if you don't have to, yet if the starter is struggling, you pretty much have to get a reliever up before the game gets out of hand.
  25. A few things about this year's rotation versus last year's: 1. The same 2-5 that we had last year can now actually be 2-5. Last year they were expected to be 1-4. That may not be a huge difference, but it is a difference. 2. Rodriguez was not in the rotation to start the year. Masterson was. So, Price replaced Miley and Rodriguez replaced Masterson. Those are two significant upgrades. 3. Do not discount the effect that the Vazquez and Hanigan injuries had on the staff. Swihart did the best he could under the circumstances, but he was not ready. Having a healthy Vazquez behind the plate will improve the staff. 4. If the BP is as good as it projects to be, it can shorten the games to 6 or even 5 innings. Fangraphs early projections: Red Sox winning the division with a 92-70 record.
