  1. Trading Beni would be a huge mistake, IMO, even if it is for Stanton.
  2. We will always be one of the big spenders, but there is still a limit to how much Henry will spend. Teams can no longer afford to just sign expensive free agent after expensive free agent. The Yankees are not even doing that anymore. The penalties are too stiff. Having a strong farm system is a priority more now than in the past.
  3. My hope was that Varitek would take the role of bullpen coach. Unfortunately, that doesn't sound like it's going to happen.
  4. Yes, absolutely.
  5. That sounds reasonable as to what he will get. I would not sign him for that, but I think he'll get it.
  6. I agree. This kind of contract is crazy talk. Of course, Boras is just blowing a lot of smoke right now, but if JD is going to get anything close to that, then I say pass.
  7. Very sad. Best wishes to his family.
  8. I don't really have anything against signing Hosmer for the right deal, but 7/150 is crazy talk. Add to that the fact that he has a QO attached to him, and that's double crazy talk.
  9. Well, that was kind of my point, but I didn't want to dwell on it any more. At least with Ben's last place finishes, the teams were expected to contend. If we do indeed hit a cliff, then we may have years where the team is projected to finish in last place.
  10. I did not mean that as a knock against you for posting that. I was just saying that I think we all say that coming.
  11. Dombrowski doesn't need a pass for this year or last year. He put contending teams on the field both years. The team getting knocked out in the first round of the playoffs is not his fault. As far as hiring LaRussa goes, once again, I just don't see the need. Roenicke was hired as Cora's bench coach to provide that experience and to complement Cora. IMO, Dombrowski should have hired a VP that could challenge his views a little more, rather than someone who seems like he would be in complete agreement with them.
  12. I give Dombrowski credit for at least giving the appearance that he is trying to embrace analytics.
  13. I realize that some of those teams didn't work out as planned, but to my knowledge, every one of the teams were projected to get into the postseason. I also realize that projections don't mean anything and that the games still have to be played, but my point is that the GMs did their jobs in the offseason. I have felt excited entering every season. That, to me, is different than knowing you have a bad team and won't make the playoffs even before the season starts.
  14. This breaks my heart. RIP Roy
  15. IMO, the HOF should be reserved or the truly, truly elite. Someone once said that if people have to debate about whether a player should get in or not, then he probably shouldn't get in. Makes sense to me.
  16. Agreed. He also does not seem the least bit overwhelmed by the media microscope that he will be under.
  17. The GM's job is to put together a team that is projected to be competitive and make the playoffs. During the Henry era, every team put together has met that goal, including the teams that have finished in last place. The GM cannot control what happens on the field. To that end, Dombrowski has done his job to date.
  18. Alex Cora - My man! THE ANALYSTS WILL BE IN THE CONVERSATION: For years, the discussion of analytics has slowly reshaped from whether statistical data is useful (surprise! it is!) to the question of implementation and blending data into on-field decision-making — how to make numbers seem useful rather than scary (or pointless) to players. Cora said that Houston represented a phenomenal example of an organization that successfully connected its analysts with its manager, coaching staff, and players, and vowed that under him, the same would occur with the Red Sox. In that vein, it was interesting to note that Dombrowski said the Sox would add a “quality control coach” — someone who may well be in uniform — to help connect analytics to the field.
  19. That was kind of obvious. That was the whole reason for resetting the penalties.
  20. I am very excited about Cora, even more so after reading what he had to say today.
  21. My problem is, why is there even a window to begin with? The farm system should provide a revolving door of players ready to step in when others leave for free agency, not something to be depleted in one fell swoop, thereby creating a window. That said, I completely agree that things could change in 2-3 years.
  22. We both have acknowledged that it could disappear before it actually gets here. As of now, it's here. It's no different than the 'prophecy of doom' that I listened to a good bit of the year about how we had a .500 team.
  23. I don't think Dombrowski was a year too soon. It was already a good team, ready to make that push for the playoffs. The timing was fine. The extent of the sell off is what I take issue with.
