  1. Cora came to the team with several ideas that he wanted to implement, based on their success with the Astros. One of them was resting players regularly. Another was to sit a player at the first sign of a slump. In the long run, I think it will help our players to stay fresh. That said, I really wouldn't mess with the alignment of Beni, JBJ, and Betts in the outfield.
  2. It's not 'picking the right years'. You will be able to find good teams that have good records in one run games. You will be able to find bad teams that have good records in one run games. Team records in one run games are all over the place. That's the point. It's very random.
  3. And in those same seasons, here are the records in blow out games (5+ runs): 2004 36-20, .643 2007 36-17, .679 2013 33-13, .717 You can tell a lot more about the talent of a team by looking at its record in blow out games. A team's record in 1 run games pretty much tells you nothing, except maybe how lucky or unlucky a team has been.
  4. It seems that the number of pitches thrown in a game has more of an effect on future performance than days of rest has. And the cumulative effect is greater than the immediate effect. That, coupled with the idea of not having your starters face an opposing line up a 3rd time through the order suggests to me that limiting pitch counts would be more effective than more days of rest in between starts. That said, I'm not opposed to giving a starter an extra day off here and there.
  5. Ten to fourteen days sounds a little optimistic. I just hope it doesn't linger on and on.
  6. As I said, you have a lot to learn about bowling. You are way off base with your bowling post. So don't respond to me if you can't take me seriously. That's your defense every time you are losing a debate.
  7. Awesome game, and great game thread! And the Yankees lose on top of it! Let's go!
  8. But check out his OBP.
  9. And Boone is a doofus.
  10. Our defense was indeed rather shaky this game. And yet, not one error has been charged. Something is very wrong with this picture.
  11. I agree. Keep Mookie in the lead off spot.
  12. Stanton will be fine. That said, I am glad the Sox didn't get him. I didn't want him on the Yankees either, but I didn't want the 10 year deal.
  13. One of the best team's in baseball, the Astros, and one of the worst teams in baseball, the Padres, went to the bottom of the 10th in a 0-0 tie. The Astros won the game on a seemingly routine infield pop up that Hosmer overran, allowing the runner from 2nd base to score. Good stuff.
  14. I'm anxious to see the return of ERod. Velazquez and Johnson are now long man options in the pen, if needed. Complete the sweep. Let's go!
  15. Exactly. A team should never take any opponent lightly.
  16. The umpires and their calls, the time of day or night of the game, and strength of schedule are actually all random factors which affect the outcome of a game. Kind of my point. If you had a different umpire in a one run game, with all other things remaining the same, it's very likely that you would have had a different outcome If a game is won by 5 runs, you can be pretty sure, but not 100% sure, that the random factors were not significant factors in the outcome of the game. If the game is decided by one run, you can be pretty sure that the random factors played a significant role in the outcome of the game.
  17. Who is not giving Dombrowski any credit? Who doesn't think that this team has a good chance to win the division? There is a legitimate reason to be concerned about the depth of our starting rotation. If they can stay healthy, we'll have one of the best rotations in baseball. But their ability to stay healthy is a valid concern.
  18. You have a lot to learn about the sport of bowling. The lanes do not stay exactly the same. The oil pattern is constantly changing due to the lighting, room temperature, and the balls rolling down the lanes. The bowlers have to constantly make adjustments, including ball changes. When the pins are set, they can sometimes be off spot. A pin being off spot by just a millimeter can be the difference between a strike and a 10 pin. Sometimes a bowler can throw a great shot, and leave a ringing 10 pin or a stone 7 pin. Bad luck. Sometimes a bowler can throw a bad shot and get a strike. Good luck. Bowling is not nearly as random as baseball, but it has its randomness. Throwing the same shot is a repeatable skill, despite not always getting the same result.
  19. How was the 2012 team better than the 2013 team? They had a better record, but that was due to their outrageously lucky record in one run games. The 2013 team was actually better than the 2012 team. Just not as lucky.
  20. Repeatable skill means that there is some statistical correlation between records in one run games and overall records, and/or some correlation from season to season or even from the first half of the season to the second half of the season. Yes, I am saying that given the same or similar teams, winning 1-2 run games would not be repeatable. Winning 4+ run games would be.
