  1. We have a winner.
  2. We don't have to go to a Yankee board. The Yankee enthusiasm here isn't all grounded in reality.
  3. Like bkz, I think he'll get traded this summer.
  4. Jayson Stark‏Verified account @jaysonst 49m49 minutes ago It's Feb. 1, less than 2 weeks to pitchers & catchers. Here's the new normal in free agency: 16 teams haven't signed any free agent to a multi-year contract. 23 teams haven't signed any free agent to a deal longer than 2 years. The discipline by clubs this winter #unprecedented
  5. Offensively, of course. On the whole, I don't think so.
  6. Don't you think it's a good idea that Notin made this a separate thread so the people could find it?
  7. People deserve a 2nd chance. He got a 2nd chance and a 3rd chance, and screwed up both times. I don't think he deserves a 4th chance.
  8. The aforementioned DRA takes this into account, on both the starting pitcher's part and the reliever's part.
  9. ERA gives the same value to a pitcher who has a dominant 1-2-3 inning as it does to a pitcher who walks the bases loaded without recording an out, leaves the game, and has a reliever clean up his mess. And that's just one of the many flaws of ERA.
  10. Deserved Run Average (DRA) - A stat whose time is well past due.
  11. I don't know that he was my favorite, but he was my favorite when it came to closing out games. He just didn't mess around and almost never created any 9th inning drama.
  12. Any single season correlation between payroll and winning is not very strong. The correlation coefficient is somewhere in the neighborhood of .25. In some years, alphabetical order has a stronger correlation to winning than payroll does. That said, there is a much stronger correlation between sustained spending, or lack thereof, and winning. If you look at 3 year cycles, the correlation between payroll and winning is closer to .6, which is pretty strong. It makes sense that this would be the case.
  13. I am a fan of all of the aforementioned closers. I'm just not a fan of signing any of them to big deals. Truth be told, when the Sox re-signed Koji for $18 mil/2 yrs, I winced. That said, with Koji's deal at least it was only for 2 years.
  14. I do not disagree with either of those statements. His BB/9 and HR/9, along with his crazy BABIP of .216 are all causes for concern. I think he can be effective for another year or two, but he is not worth the risk of anything over 3 years. Even 3 years might be pushing one's luck.
  15. MLB players are not reacting very kindly to this signing.
  16. Thanks for posting this Harmony. I still think it's ridiculous. It's not like he only messed up one time and they're willing to give him a second chance.
  17. So, why even bother? Kind of stupid, if you ask me.
  18. Baseball Prospectus ranks catchers defensively by framing runs, fielding runs, blocking runs, caught stealing runs, stealing runs, and throwing runs. Out of 117 ranked catchers in 2018, Leon ranked 7th and Vazquez ranked 14th. Swihart ranked 38th, which is not bad out of 117. As a team, Boston catchers ranked 3rd out of the 30 teams. Those are based on the measurable stats. I think Leon and Vazquez would rank even better when you factor in the intangibles. Regardless, don't mess with a good thing.
  19. Amen, brother sk.
  20. I tend to agree with that.
  21. The problem, as I see it, is that Cora seems hesitant to give him the playing time that he needs. Why, I don't know. He's a good athlete and could probably be a very good catcher, but he's been sort of yanked around in our system. I don't think he can get to where he needs to be with the limited playing time that he's been getting.
  22. So, you're saying you've called me stupid in the past, and I just didn't catch it?
  23. I really don't disagree with any of this.
  24. I am interested to know why the ban was rescinded. Anyone?
  25. Ah. I happen to agree with your optimism, though I think you're being facetious. I responded that often times your best relievers come out of nowhere.
