  1. You have no idea how happy and excited this post makes me. If that's the case, I may have to move Dombrowski up to equal ranking with Ben.
  2. I would not be surprised if Pedroia retired and forfeited his money if he can no longer play. I know that's crazy talk, but I can see him doing that. As someone else suggested, the team could hire him in some kind of coaching capacity instead. That said, I'm sure the union would frown upon that.
  3. Truth. Please don't let the BP blow any games early.
  4. The more crap you throw, the better the chance that some of it sticks.
  5. It makes sense why Henry would put a hold on the spending, but as I said before, I find it odd that he would not go all out this year and wait until next year to tighten the reigns. That said, 1. I am not advocating for Henry to spend more money. 2. I am good going into the season with the team we have. I just don't understand Henry's logic in not spending this year as opposed to waiting until next year.
  6. Dombrowski has officially become "Dumpster Dive" Dave, not that there's anything wrong with that. I am glad to see that he is signing all of these minor league contracts.
  7. I have never been a fan of the Hot Stove, but this offseason seems a lot worse than most.
  8. You are correct from the players' and coaches' point of view. I'm speaking from a purely selfish point.
  9. I can see both sides of the argument. If I were an owner, I would not be willing to pay out the large contracts that some free agents are demanding. And while I think that owners have the right to try to maximize their profits, within reason, I don't think it's for them to pocket so much money with little consideration of putting a quality product on the field. IMO, it's the fans that should go on strike.
  10. It's sounding more and more like one may be coming our way. From a personal standpoint, I really hope there isn't one.
  11. Yes, it is. I like to think that it *is* discipline, and that owners have wised up to the risks of long term contracts. But just when I start becoming hopeful, some owner comes along and shoots me down.
  12. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it.
  13. I give you permission to call me out personally if we fall short this year due to our bullpen. And I give you permission to say "I told you so!"
  14. The baseball offseason is far too long, IMO.
  15. FTR, in case there was any doubt, let me say that I love stat geeks.
  16. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that I didn't like Koji off the field. I agree that he seemed like a really good guy. I just like those other guys, Foulke, Kimbrel, and even Papelbon, maybe especially Papelbon, as well.
  17. I'm not so sure that these things tend to even out over time.
  18. I agree that FIP, xFIP, and SIERA are all good measures. I think DRA is better. It's not hard to find (Baseball Prospectus sortable stats), but BP does not allow you to filter stats the way Fangraphs or BR does, unless you have a subscription.
  19. There are so many scenarios like this that show the problems with ERA. I'm not saying it's a terrible or useless stat, and I will quote ERA myself because of its simplicity and familiarity, but there are better stats by which to measure a pitcher.
  20. We have a winner.
  21. We don't have to go to a Yankee board. The Yankee enthusiasm here isn't all grounded in reality.
  22. Like bkz, I think he'll get traded this summer.
  23. Jayson Stark‏Verified account @jaysonst 49m49 minutes ago It's Feb. 1, less than 2 weeks to pitchers & catchers. Here's the new normal in free agency: 16 teams haven't signed any free agent to a multi-year contract. 23 teams haven't signed any free agent to a deal longer than 2 years. The discipline by clubs this winter #unprecedented
  24. Offensively, of course. On the whole, I don't think so.
