End of the season was a HUGE letdown. With a few games to go, 4 teams were competing for 3 spots and the Bruins ended up as the 1 team that didn't make it. Going to try and forget this season but that might be hard since I play NHL 15 regularly. Bruins tied the record for most points a team has ever had without making the playoffs. Would have made the all time record if they won the shootout against the Lightning. I hate how our 9 shootout losses or whatever were the difference between us making it and not making it. We better have the 3 on 3 rule in effect for next year.
Bruins are one of the best teams at creating chances, but for the last 2 years they've been struggling at finishing. At first it seemed like a fluke and that they were just getting unlucky, but you have to wonder if their current style of play or skill at finishing is actually flawed. Something seems wrong with their style of play. They almost always dump the puck in and then try to force a battle along the boards in the offensive zone to win the puck. The problem with this is that it makes both teams fumble around with the puck, and after much stick jabbing and poke checking, the Bruins sometimes win the puck in the offensive zone and are able to get in their shooting formation. But the method they use to get the puck in the offensive zone seems luck reliant. By dumping and chasing, they create a chaotic battle for the puck where because they aren't more physical, it's luck which team ends up with it after much stick slapping and fumbling around. Then when they do get close to the net, or even get all alone on the goalie, they usually fail to elevate the puck. So all the goalie has to do is drop to the default butterfly position and he wins. This is what happened on pretty much every single one of the Bruins' breakaways in the last 5 games of the season.
With the referees getting softer and not allowing as many fights, perhaps it's harder to play the same physical style. As long as we have Claude's system in place and have guys like Hamilton and Lucic around, we should still try to be a physical team. We should try to become what we were in the 2014 season when we won the president's trophy. Let's be a physical team that also has a fast skater on every line. All of our lines should be made more like the Lucic and Pastrnak line, with both physicality and a finisher present. I guess. I'm not an expert on team building yet. But I know we had an awesome team in 2014 and just cause we lost a game 7 in the playoffs doesn't mean that team was flawed. Let's become like the 2014 team with more finishing ability.
