But of course a cell-phone is different from a statistic. You can test a cell phone to see if it works. How do you test a new mysterious statistic? Self-validation is not enough. (I believe I recall such a test from Moneyball for why OPS was preferable to, say, BA). But have we studied those tests? (Some are simple--I remember mathematical demonstrations in the 60s as to why bunts were not useful--of course, MLB managers paid not attentioin). One does not need to understand, say, dWAR to 'use' it. But one is required, I think, to demonstrate (or to describe such a demonstration) of why it is preferable to other stats.

Exactly! As Richard Feynman said in the context of physics, if you have a word to explain some phenomenon or problem but cannot explain it in ordinary language, then you do not understand it.

Please explain in plain language what DRS is and exactly how it is computed.

Not sure how folks can bemoan the loss of core players like that but still support getting rid of current (or near-current!) players whose salaries or d- or f-WAR (or whatever the f. it is that no human can explain in plain language) or speculative upside or downside isn't what a fantasy-sports-owners would prefer.

Ha! That's why my students were not allowed to cite "Google" or, their favorite "THE" dictionary. (That said, I and every academic I know uses those resources and Wiki all the time! They just aren't definitive.)

That is not quite correct. You can be sarcastic without being ironic (as in the above example). Although it is true, on the internet, the two terms are used indiscriminately.

I think we need to distinguish sarcasm from irony. The way I used to explain it to my students was: You ask me why you got a certain grade, and I respond: BECAUSE YOU'RE a F**KING IDIOT! If you got an F, that remark is sarcastic; if you got an A, it's ironic. (I'm not sure they completely got it, but at least it made an impression.)

Not me. I don't want real sports to be like fantasy sports. I want to follow human beings and see how the same humans do year to year. Thus even after players are gone, I will tend to follow their careers (like Mookie, Boggs, Roger, Lester, Manny [OF COURSE!], Ellsbury, Eck ... ).

Right. That's the point we were trying to make. (They weren't uncommon in minor leagues not too long ago, right? Seems to me my brother and I went to one in Portland ... AAA then ... and it was great--like being kids again. And even with an hour drive, we got back at a reasonable hour.)

When we were kids (some of us!), didn't games start at 8PM? And, even as kids, we could stay up long enough to listen to them?

Anyone who has watched a ST game will agree that the runaway winner is the pitch clock! OOPS. Did I speak too soon? Are they not using it yet? (I had assumed they were). In any case, the games I've seen are showing pitches generally about 12-15 secs. Is this just because young pitchers are used to clocks in the minors?

Think like a fan (a customer). Some of us don't like to see the product change each year because Pantone invents or declares a new Color of the Year.

I knew about ERA more than 60 years ago, as did every baseball fan or casual player I knew, and the calculations were no more difficult than batting average (I realize long division may remain a mystery for some fans). I also knew how to add up Wins and Losses, although in those days, it was a lot easier to count W's than L's.

Exactly. As I've pointed out before, name me one fan (including yourself) who ever put money down or attended a game because they wanted to see the fWAR or dWAR race (you don't need to disparage me for not knowing the difference. I don't. And don't care.) As for HRs being boring, think Sosa and Bonds, the race that saved baseball.
