It irritates fans (like me), who believe when we watch competitive sports, we want to see competitive sports, not competitive front offices. Also, "rebuilding" is entirely different from "tanking" (which is deliberately trying to lose, something seemingly more prevalent in the NBA).

It's New England. That's who we are. I have a friend here who hates winter, and in mid-May she was heard to lament: "Oh God. In six weeks, the days will start getting shorter again."

I don't buy it. I saw him play in Portland and he was the same way. I hadn't heard of him, and I was amazed at his athleticism at third (just playing at a level way beyond others in AA). But he also made an error--exactly same type on a throw as he has made at the majors. Nothing has "sped up on him"; that's the way he is, and he just needs to work on it to improve (which I am confident he will).

A real 3 baseman? This is great in theory, but you might bear in mind how the RS did when they had this same problem a couple of years ago. I would guess for these three you would be demanding a .300 hitter, excellent fielder, who hits 30-40 dingers a year. There are 30 to choose from. Who do you have in mind? And if a team had such a mythical star, why would they dump him?

Blaming NFL ratings on nice white folks angry at the anthem protest is total right-wing b.s. You will recall that BLM called for an NFL boycott before that, leading to the kind of double-think we are now getting used to: black leftists are hurting business by not buying our product!!!!!! Bad evil black people!!! the people not buying our product are good, decent white folks who do not like black people not buying our product!!! Poor patriotic white folks!--we need to lure them back.

He looked really bad last night. In the last few weeks (months?-- into last year?) he has proven not to be that .230 hitter the Sox could live with, but more like a guy you would want to replace with a DH. I do not understand how anyone who has proven he can hit in the past can look so bad. (But then, Daniel Bard comes to mind).

Totally agree. ... Of course, the RS also have the best record in baseball. So maybe this is the way to go.

I don't take the content real seriously, but the juvenile sexist and homophobic slurs are tedious and should be embarrassing to those who cannot seem to restrain themselves. I'm sure all this seemed extremely bad-ass when we were, say, 10 years old. It's boring now. Another way to block these overgrown pre-pubescents is to go to "settings" on the upper right of the page (on the red border).

"Save" is a completely artificial stat (well, so are all others, I suppose). A guy who can only perform in 'save situations' is a guy who is more concerned with stats than production. (Although in fairness to Kimbrel, I don't recall him ever saying anything about only coming in in certain situations--maybe his agent has?) Can you imagine a batter saying "Sorry. I only hit with an 0-0 count." Or a fielder-- "Nope. I'm not standing out here if they're going to hit ground balls; I only do pop-ups."

Trying to get Hanley hurt? The conspiracy theory is absurd. Isn't the manager's job to try to get the team to win as many games as possible? One way to do that right now is to play Hanley. (as in tonight).

Plus he was married to MMonroe! To be in the company of Arthur Miller--that ain't nothin'! I never saw JD play either, but I was sitting in a small espresso shop in Little Italy (La Roma, I think), when he walked in-- a fairly ordinary looking guy. Must have been for the Old TImers game that year? I didn't recognize him at first, but his awful (in the old sense) presence just filled the room. -
Has tanking now become the Holy Grail of pro-sports? Am I really seeing discussion of a first place team getting rid of starting pitchers and an ace closer for prospects? Or have I missed several onion-like layers of irony here?

The image that is burned in my memory is the look Frank Malzone used to give over his shoulder when one went through his legs--a look that he had many many opportunities to practice. He was a gold glove 3b, whose errors were attributed to his ability to get to balls that other third basemen couldn't touch. (He also had difficulty with balls hit directly at him, which is not all that rare a weakness!)

OMG! We disagree. The sky will fall. Perhaps the best way to put it is that the chances that Devers' D will improve are much better than the chances that JBJ will become a decent and consistent hitter. But of course, by any ordinary definition, JBJ is the better athlete.

Agree entirely. But he and a couple of others who throw around sexist and homophobic language as if they were bad-ass kids on a middle school playground don't bother me, thanks to the 'block' function.
