  1. devers strike zone command is striking - just how he has handled lefties
  2. I was always in favor of a post-ASB call up. I did not care about the AAA promotion as much. It's really about the kid. It's not like anybody would have been scared of a promotion from AA.
  3. No. I wish he had more power - I'd like more thunder at 1B - but Travis is an okay fallback. Moreland turning back into Mitch Moreland should not have surprised anybody.
  4. You can always monday morning QB this - and I don't blame the team for using some kid gloves on a 20 year old (who has always been the youngest kid in his league) who has not had a ton of high pressure competition. Just glad they took the plunge at all - instead of going for a short term stopgap who did not have a higher return potential. The players staffing 3B cost them games ultimately. It certainly was not obvious in April that Devers was ready for this job.
  5. it's basically akin to the football sideline rule - he has to be "inbounds" when he secures possession (or in the field of play - by whatever the defitinion is) ... his momentum can take him anywhere after, but he has to hold the ball the entire way
  6. Devers had the least to do to provide a major improvement - let's put it this way, he has provided 0.6 fWAR in one week. So he has produced more in one week than the rest of the 3B options have this season.
  7. Hosmer should be cheaper - has enough untapped potential. Devers by most accounts (and a few eye test games) is fine at 3B. Frazier is good as a 3 true outcomes sort.
  8. Wren was a bad GM ... poor relationship with his scouts, stopped bringing in upside (from an org which had a terrific record and network in the area)
  9. Definitely better than a less witty version of those 2 old guy muppets in the balcony
  10. Would have been music to my ears since I had to suffer the Costas-Kaat version of the broadcast
  11. It's just baseball - go figure, you get a great outing from Fister and you think "we stole a game and now we have Sale" ... and then Sale and Kimbrel BOTH stink, but we win anyway. Also - rare that a game which ended with a 3 run walkoff where that homerun might have still been upstaged by that Jackson catch.
  12. lot of personnel changes between those years - both with Boston and its opponents. 162 is a large enough sample - but every season is its own story ultimately. The sample size argument only really holds if the variables are relatively similar. 2012 - Everybody was hurt 2014 - Nobody could hit 2015 - Nobody could pitch Every season is its own story
  13. watching on mlbn - Costas and Kaat are very very hard to listen to
  14. Small sample sizes abound ... caution is warranted. A .471 BABIP ain't forever. At the same time, his walk rate very early is 50% greater than anything Middlebrooks did. From watching, he has much better command of the strike zone as a 20 year old than Middlebrooks every had.
  15. It's what you get when you are an 18 year old in a full season league - scouts always noted the swing was there. Funny what happens as you grow into your body. Almost all of these plate appearances have involved him being the youngest kid in the entire league.
  16. Votto At the same time, Votto is exactly what the team needs. While I would not like trading, say Bogaerts and Groome for Votto and Cozart (for instance) ... that deal is not terrible, and there are reasons for both sides to do it.
  17. Our #2 hitter, like hitters #1-#9, should focus on not making outs. .347 OBP is not as amazing as I'd want - but fine.
  18. More true in 1997 than now. 12 man pitching staffs mean that there are just fewer bench players - guys HAVE to play.
  19. Pedestrian compared to Aaron Judge - solid compared to anybody else. Stuff happens at different rates - David Ortiz was a not-very good regular in Minnesota. Things happen - ultimately the upside of this team lies on the kiddos, which for any organization is a good problem to have. Indeed our kid led team is a 1st place one knowing that there is room to improve.
  20. He's going be Holt on the low end, closer to Zobrist on the high ... plug in wherever makes sense ... I don't mind them giving Devers some time off here and there (like 1 out of 3 games) ... between Benintendi, Moreland and Devers, there should be enough at-bats for him.
  21. I think the question is not will Devers be here the rest of the year ... just how will his work be managed. I think it would have been easy to do a straight platoon - but he looks surprisingly stout against lefties already. (first Pawsox homerun, a hit yesterday) But Nunez gives Farrell a lot of options to manage rest and PT - it's like getting a good Brock Holt.
  22. Nunez is basically a version of Brock Holt who is actually good (see Holt 2014). And that would help! Between 1B, 3B and spelling other spots there are the ABs for him.
  23. yeah, there's "taking pressure off the kid" but that is a bit much ...
  24. They don't bring him up at all if they had an intention of cutting bait quickly. He is going to be part of the 3B situation the rest of the way - the only question is how much platooning they do. (my guess = quite a bit)
  25. Maybe - the consensus scouting I've seen says he is fine at 3B, and eventually his bat will profile anywhere.
