  1. Probably there as a sounding board for Dombrowski and Cora.
  2. I suspect Benintendi. Groome and stuff will at least put them in the ballpark, especially if the Marlins care about the dumping salary thing. I am not sure I would do it - but that is a different question.
  3. It was a known issue. At the same time, it's not really his job here. We make a big deal of the manager hiring his coaches - but the Red Sox NEVER did that with Francona. And we obviously just saw a purge of Maddon's coaching staff. I don't think the Red Sox not having a manager is a huge issue here so much as the coaches decided to go somewhere else.
  4. We are not Tampa North either. The team has a very large payroll and will maintain one. The team is actually using its farm the way large market teams do use them - keep your stars and use other stuff to supplement. They got pretty good quality in all of their trades so far, and the guys they identified as keepers seem at worst highly defensible. No team has a farm system which produces star prospects forever. Kids graduate, and then there is some gaps in AA/AAA for a bit. Question now is whether Dombrowski can fill those gaps in. Obviously the evidence is inconclusive. Remember, at the time of the cliff, none of the Red Sox most important position players will be 30. The "cliff" as it were is entirely within the Red Sox control.
  5. Well, this will be harder to bounce back from. But hopefully it can at least stabilize things. The reality with Pedroia is that really his deal has been all about injuries. When he has been healthy, he has been almost metronomically consistent 3-5 win player. In 2014 he had his .337 OBP, which was his career worst by a significant margin - so nagging stuff and basic fluke can explain that. The deal made trading him hard yes - but the Red Sox were never going to get fair value for him. He meant more to Boston than to anybody else that way ... plus, as noted above - he was still really good, and a serious bargain for the production. Really riding it out was the only option. He's been one of the best 15-20 players in team history ... but you do have to start thinking about the end here.
  6. Cora and he are very close ... I could see him up for another spin.
  7. That's because on average it's true
  8. If the Yankees did it - it is a weird move. If Girardi wanted a rest (which it sure sounded like during the playoffs) it makes more sense.
  9. Girardi out - could have seen it coming ...
  10. If he could stay in the middle of the field, the org would have kept him there.
  11. The extra inning record and just how much adversity the team had to fight through refutes that imo. Now - there was not a lot of joy, and I do think Farrell is somewhat responsible for that environment. But this team had a certain toughness to it. We saw it in Boston after the two routs in Houston in the ALDS.
  12. I think there is a 20% chance Chavis is part of the 1B picture by the middle of 2018.
  13. No - they won 90 games and have to figure out if the 90 win team is really them or the 69 win version of 2016 is. Is it a fluke or not - and then what do you do? I doubt they deal Goldschmidt - but this is the prime window to do so if you think there is a fluke.
  14. They had such an extraordinary season that the team will ask "how close are they REALLY". That will drive this. Now obviously they are much more likely to deal Greinke - but I think they will see if someone will blow them away. (it probably won't happen)
  15. I think they absolutely shop Goldschmidt - or at least let everybody know they will take a phone call ... this season was amazing for them, but if Goldschmidt can net a king's fortune Abington, MA Mike Hazen has to take a look.
  16. In September - well it did sap power seemingly ... but yeah that proves my point too.
  17. Defensively the reverse alignment is probably better ... what IS funny about Moustakas is favoring him over Hosmer despite a lot of the same red flags ... checkered performance, inconsistency ... meh defense. The homeruns are a key difference - but how much of that is offset by a significant difference in OBP.
  18. Fair enough. Maybe Betts should have - his season was downer. Wrist hand things are really tough. Really anything that messes up the ability to hold the bat seems very hard to fix during the season. Chavis last year on the farm another good example.
  19. In retrospect, I agree with you about quality. The comps you cite are flawed. Kershaw and Strasburg both missed a number of starts. Pomeranz was better than both Lester and Arrieta, both of whom had lousy seasons.
  20. No - because I have seen enough players with that exact injury issue to withhold judgment.
  21. About the same as his pre-trade 2016 ... and very low in terms of innings per start for a #2
  22. The Red Sox won 93 games without much, if any, "good luck". (well the 15-3 record in extra innings ... but in terms of player production outcomes) The question is whether the lack of amazing seasons from the kids was systemic or just coincidence. I could see Butterfield staying ... Cora has guys he might want to work with - but I think Dombrowski will drive the process (as was the case with Epstein). But it will be a strong coaching staff that Cora can (and will) delegate a lot to.
  23. It's 1B ... you give someone a glove and hope for the best. Having 1984 Keith Hernandez would be awesome - but a luxury. Carlos Santana I'd list as the high probability answer - which is actually pretty good. Some power, good on-base skills ... can catch if our catchers get hit by a meteor.
  24. Duda makes more sense on a short deal - if the bidding gets to 4 years or something ... Hosmer is more attractive (the 3 year age advantage kicks in). Although for my money "none of the above" becomes the answer ... or "give Jose Bautista a first baseman's mitt and a 1-year deal" or "bring back Moreland"
  25. First ever non-white manager.
