  1. Come on SK ... Ellsbury's first full season was in 2008 at the age of 24 ... he had an OPS of .730 with 50 SB's leading off. In 2009 age 25 an OPS of .770 with 70 Bags ... 2010 he was out with injuries. In 2011 a .928 OPS 52 SB's 32 HR's 119 Runs 105 RBI's all from the lead off spot. In 2012 he was mostly injured ... wrist this time. In 2013 .779 OPS (about .021 short of Adrian Gonzalez batting 3rd for LA) 52 SB's So far 4 years healthy and 2 years not. Take the averages of his 4 good years and hope that he has learned how to stay healthy. He is 30 ... not 34. A 5 year deal is not going crazy.
  2. Ellsbury is 30 and keeps in shape. Has worked hard each time he was injured. The Beltre injury was brutal as he was not wearing his pads. I will take Ellsbury's 2011 season over any Red Sox Season in the past 15 years. What is Ellsbury was in the 3 spot with Ortiz batting behind him all season ... would not his numbers be better? batting lead-off is not easy. I am a fan of Ellsbury there is no denying this fact ... but rightfully so. I will not be surprised if Ellsbury averaged 20 HR's and 35 SB's with a .290 Average and a .350 OBP over the next 5 years. Mark it down.
  3. Ellsbury can do better than his 2013 numbers. Is 5 years a long term contract. Again, you have no problem paying Pedroia until he is 38. Which is it with you?
  4. I'll take Ellsbury's 2011 season over any season that Boggs had with or without Boston.
  5. Joe Namath could not guarantee a super bowl win but he did ... but you are right it is not up to anyone of us. I will defer to the Sox Front Office. My wish list for Free Agents is: Ellsbury (because of my blind man crush and the fact that he is the best lead of hitter the Sox have had in the modern era) Salty ( because I think we can sign him at a good price and the right number of years - 3) Jose Dariel Abreu (because I am a bit of a river boat gambler) Masahiro Tanaka (because you can never have enough quality pitching) Drew (because we cannot count on Middlebrooks and or Bogaerts at this time)
  6. I agree with your about Middlebrooks chasing low sliders off the plate. Maybe he has to strap on the big elbow protector and crowd the plate like Victorino. I have also noticed that he has been taking first strikes on a consistent basis ... I mean balls right down the pipe. He may want to mix that up as well since he is a good fast ball hitter. Either way he is starting to revert as of late to his early season form. The off season will be as interesting as ever now that the fan expectations are once again sky high.
  7. I like Nava ... his average is 80+ points less when batting from the right side ... maybe he should pull a Victorino and bat from the left side all the time. Just because you can switch hit does not mean that you should. Nava is a 300 hitter against right handed pitching. And you are correct they would have a lot of flexibility with Ells, Vic, Bradley, Gomes and Nava. I will guarantee you that Ells can play center field for 4 more years. Hell, the Sox signed Cameron to play center when Cameron was 82. Not every field is Fenway ... even if they move Ells to left 4 or 5 years from now he will still be faster than your average left fielder.
  8. Yeah ... this team is really good. In fact our record could be even better with more saves early in the season. If we play to our best level this season we will win the World Series.
  9. Well said Dojji ... well said.
  10. I am not buying the 'adjusting to the park' theory. The Sox went after Napoli because he had always killed the ball at Fenway and his swing is suited to the park. You cannot double count the positives. I like Napoli ... but nothing has changed from his 2013 signing ... has it? If Napoli were 26 without any health issues I would sign him to a 60 / 6 contract immediately. Napoli might have 1 more good season left or 5 ... but the smart money may look at the opportunity with Abreu.
  11. Love Pedroia, who doesn't? A healthy Ellsbury is better than a healthy Pedroia. Pedroia never got run over by Beltre and I believe that he shut it down last season with a similar injury that Ellsbury stole a base with. If you do not think that luck has something to do with injuries you are mistaken. Ellsbury is a tough kid and he has been unlucky injury wise. Each time he was injured he worked his way back. Yeah yeah yeah I think Ellsbury is a great talent, home grown on the farm, it gets on base ... gets pitchers off their game ... remember that Ellsbury does not get to bat with Ellsbury on base. Ellsbury is a winner.
  12. I do not remember stating that we should give Ellsbury a 8 year deal. I might have but I do not remember saying that. As far as the 18.5 vs 16.6 AAV ... I am not so sure that he would not stay with Boston at 16.6 and I am not completely sold on the fact that the Sox would not give him 18.5 either.
  13. No one seems to be bothered paying Pedroia 14M per when he is 37 and 38. Do you really think Pedroia is going to have the same range and bat speed when he is 37 and 38? 6 years for Ellsbury takes him to age 35 to begin the season 36 at seasons end.
  14. The decision on Abreu is not mine to make .... we will see what BC does. If Abreu is not in his plans then the Sox will resign Napoli but I think it a stretch if they offer him 13M per guaranteed money.
  15. 100M over 6 is 16.7M per. Are you telling me that you would not resign Ellsbury for that?
  16. I clearly stated that no one but God knows what either player will do next season or any season thereafter. Based on what I have read they are projecting 60M / 6 for Abreu ... if compared to Napoli at 13m and should Abreu produce at Napoli's level then Abreu would be a better value. Also if Abreu signs for 6 years then clearly a better value. One thing that you are missing on Abreu is that it is because of the fact that he has not hit major league pitching that he can be signed for at 60M / 6. Obviously if he had produced his numbers in the majors he would go for 20M per.
  17. I agree with you 100% but if you listen to most of the folks on this Forum you can kiss Ellsbury goodbye. I on the other hand think that Ellsbury should retire wearing a Sox uniform. He is a premium athlete and when healthy one of the best players in the game today. 100M / 6 might get it done and the Sox can easily afford it because of the players coming up through the minors.
  18. The Sox will probably offer Napoli a 2 years deal similar to his 2013 season contract. Base of 5 million with incentives if they do not go after Abreu. Nothing has changed from when the Sox signed Napoli. His career OPS is .855 and his OPS for 2013 is .835. Napoli's numbers for September are crazy with an OPS of 1.260. 15 BB's to 16 SO's. I doubt that the Sox will sign Napoli to a 26M/2 guaranteed contract.
  19. A lot depends on Abreu. Abreu is younger and probably healthier. Some are projecting 60m / 6. so better value than Napoli as well. If the Sox go with an infield of Abreu, Pedroia, Bogaerts, Middlebrooks, Salty with an OF of Victorino, Ellsbury, Nava with Gomes and Carp coming off the pine are they going to miss Napoli? There is no way to predict ... Napoli's health could hold up or not ... Abreu might be over-hyped and not able to hit MLB pitching or he could be the steal of the decade and bash 40 HRs with a .295 average and .380 OBP. If Abreu does the later then Napoli will be a fond memory. BTW ... I think Bogaerts will hit .280+ with 20 HR's next season as the full time SS and Middlebrooks will better his numbers for this season. Scoring runs will not be a problem for next years team.
  20. I think at the end of the day Napoli will get his 13M for 2013. Not much to be angry about really.
  21. Is the speedster Berry no longer with the club? The Sox had lead off hits and they did not have him run ... makes no sense to me
  22. Like most things in life it really depends on the individual. Was Michael Jordon always talented ... probably so .... at the same time did he work harder than any other player on his team in every practice and game ... his teammates claim that he did.
  23. Don't rule out Boston from the Tanaka sweepstakes. Should they land Tanaka at approx. 9M per surely Dempster will be dealt. I think Boston is in good shape with respect to the Salary Cap.
  24. I read some place that Abreu began as a short stop ... meaning that he was the best fielder and best athlete on his team during his younger years. Seems as though he out grew short and then out grew 3rd base and finally landing at first. I would imagine that most MLB players played short on their little league team but this guy was in the Cuban National Program. Have you seen the videos on this guy? I would like to qualify my position on Abreu ... I want Abreu in Boston if he makes the grade with the Organizations scouts. If they do not think that he is the real deal then I accept that. If they feel that he is worth signing then so be it.
  25. Why would Boston give Napoli a 1 year deal for 14M when they would not give him that same deal last season? Answer 1: They give it as a reward for Napoli because he played hard the whole season. Answer 2: At the start of the season they were in a rebuilding mode but now they have the best record in baseball and Napoli is a big part of that. Answer 3: Napoli's numbers for 2013 season are about what Boston had expected so they will not give him a guaranteed 14m for 2014. The Sox overpaid for AGON based on his 2012 numbers and now his 2013 numbers. Abreu will cost Boston about 40% less than AGON and Abreu could very well out perform AGON. The Sox parted with AGON primarily because they were able to dump the Crawford and Beckett contracts. Boston made out like bandits in the night. AGON was also a bad club house guy. Now comes along Abreu ... like a gift on a silver platter.
