  1. Palodios you are very astute in your analysis. Every year is an entirely different set of circumstances. I hope Ben realizes that he does not have to stretch for projected marginal improvements. I do not know if Vazquez is MLB ready but there is every indication that he is defensively. Brentz and Cecchini would get more love if it were not for Bogaerts and JBJ. The Sox have a lot of high ceiling prospects in the organization and we will be re-stocking with 3-4 high picks in 2014 if we do not give away picks for FA compensation. One of the great accomplishments this season was that Papi stayed healthy. That was huge. Why add an aging Beltran as it will only increase the changes of one of the 2 going down.
  2. Signing Beltran would be a big mistake. The guy is old. You say that they drop only one draft spot ... is this accurate? ... in the end they loose a top draft pick ... a pick who could be the next Beltran ... a Beltran in his prime. I think now is the time to go with youth, save the cash for the future. Sox fans got much more than they could possibly hope for in 2013. As long as the Sox are competitive and they will be they can always make moves as the season progresses. You never know Brentz may come on strong and give you everything that you can expect from a 37 y.o. Beltran but for league minimum. Stay away from Beltran. We already have one senior citizen with Big Papi.
  3. Trumbo would be an excellent pick-up if we cannot come to terms with Nap's. The Angels will want something in return as it is not a salary dump situation ... there lies the rub.
  4. It will be interesting. A million here and a million there. Sox do not need to speed 3/36 on Drew. He is not a need. He is a nice luxury.
  5. Not surprising all 3 reject QO. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/thirteen-free-agents-turn-down-221920366--mlb.html
  6. I think that making the playoffs constitutes a successful season for most MLB teams.
  7. How about 65% ... KC has not been this close to making the playoffs in a long long time. The A's offense is made up of castoffs ... with a good many X-Redsox.
  8. It's all about pitching ... you do not have to look further from the A's organization to know this truth. The Red Sox will not have any issues producing runs even while replacing Ellsbury & Drew with JBJ & Bogaerts. The Sox should have a strong bullpen in 2014.
  9. Nava has a better chance of outperforming Beltran over the next 3 years. Maybe the Sox are just driving up the price to the Spankmees ... signing Beltran makes absolutely no sense whatsoever for Boston. Boston needs to get younger not older.
  10. Nava and Salty would be best served to hit from the left side most all the time ... especially so at Fenway where they can bang balls against the monster.
  11. I guess that you did not hear the news. Papi signed a 7 year extension.
  12. How about the Sox give JBJ a shot. He showed that he can play the field ... scouting report says he was born to play center. His numbers in AAA suggest that he can produce a respectable OBP and we have the players to allow him to bat at the back of the line-up.
  13. How about an incentive based 39 /3 with 19.5/3 guaranteed?
  14. When the hip goes it goes ... think Bo Jackson who is arguably the greatest athlete ever.
  15. He is a nice player.
  16. I agree with you Spitball but would like to make an addition. Get Tanaka and dump Dempster. I think that owners realize that without PEDS in the game any longer signing a player to a long term deal that takes the player past age 34 - 35 is a very risky proposition. A 30 y.o. CF should be signed for 4-5 year max. A 30 y.o. pitcher who has logged a lot of innings might be limited to a 3 year contract. I love Pedroia but I was not a fan of taking him out to age 38. If he wants to finish his career in Boston sign him to age 36. Like Ortiz if his goal is to finish in Boston and he still has the skills then he can do 1 year extensions after that. He is smart to stay with one team ... he will have ample opportunities in Boston for many years after his playing days are over. Not everything in life is about money.
  17. Depth Chart as it stands now: Left Field - 1. Gomes- LHP / Nava- PHP, 3. Carp Center - 1. JBJ 2. Victorino 3. Berry Right Field 1. Victorino, 2. Nava 3. Brentz I think that we can get by with this. Beltran does not add anything at this stage of his career defensively. Love his bat but we do not need him in the field or on the base-path.
  18. Many of you have Napoli with a 3 year contract that is significantly more than the 3/39 that was agreed to 1 year ago. Granted his fielding was an unknown that turned out to be a plus but the guy is one year older on the downside of his career. Maybe the hip issue is not as big an issue as it was last year. I was not aware that this condition can correct itself. I like Napoli at the original 3/39 and that is still taking a risk. The fact that we have a 2013 WS Championship would this not be the best time to semi-rebuild for the future. I have no trouble keeping Napoli because 1B is a need but let's let Ellsbury, Drew, and Salty go. Nava and Gomes can share LF, Nava can spell Victorino, Carp can spell Napoli. Lavarnway can share C with Ruiz / Ross. Sox can still deal Dempster to NL team. Koji is our closer. We will not ask Koji to pitch more than 1 inning in any regular season game.
  19. Ok ... true ... Darish did not have any MLB experience either. Nor Dice K ... Dice K could have been much more successful if he trusted his stuff more ... he nibbled and nibbled ... I think he once loaded the based with walks and then pitched his way out of it allowing no runs. Dice K had the stuff ... not the mindset. What will it cost to bring Hudson in? Nice to have Hudson but at what cost never have I heard what the price tag will be.
  20. The Crawford contract was really the bad contract of the three. Signing Ellsbury now is more of a need than the signing of Crawford. Re-signing Ellsbury is simply putting him the 1 hole for 150 games. When Crawford was signed the Sox already had the first 5 in the order settled. Do you pay the money that was paid to Crawford for a player batting 6-9. Come on man. btw ... It is quite possible that Ellsbury will not get Crawford kind of money.
  21. Brentz is near being MLB ready. It will be interesting to see how he does in Florida this coming Spring. Sox have enough outfielders why go after someone as old as Beltran who could lose it all anytime now. Right ... eventually it happens to ever MLB player.
  22. I am putting Lester, Buchholz & Lackey ahead of Peavy
  23. Many center fielders do lead off. Ellsbury is one of the best lead off hitters in the game today. Stealing 50+ bags with only being caught 4 times isn't a bad thing either. If the Sox did not have JBJ in their organization they would be over-paying to bring him back. I think that JBJ is going to make Dojji eat his words. Bogaerts is the odd's favorite to win Rookie of Year award in 2014. I am telling you now that JBJ may give him a run for the money.
  24. Agree ... if Boson cannot sign a legit #1 or #2 then why bother. Peavy is a solid 4 or 5.
  25. You are right ... that sounds crazy
