  1. Sorry Jung ... I am not buying this baseball skill vs. athletic skill argument. I would imagine that most MLB players pitched at one time in their career. Little League etc. Perhaps Ellsbury never pitched. Perhaps he never had to make throws because he was running down everything hit. How many runs in the course of Ellsbury's career has he cost the team because of his throwing arm? How many of those runs have cost the Sox winning the game. This whole stuff about his arm is crazy. His arm is stronger than Damon's ... was Damon just an athlete as well with no baseball skills. We are not talking golfers here and even if were were today's golfers are very good athletes. All baseball players are athletes ... even David Wells was an athlete. Big Papi and Prince Fielder are athletes. Sumo wrestlers are athletes. Would Ellsbury be in the majors for his speed alone ... he obviously has athletic skills that translate to baseball.
  2. Ok ... we get your point ... you hate Harvard because George Bush went there.
  3. Well from Pedroia's point of view better to get the contract completed in case of a career ending injury.
  4. I assume the 32M does not include dumping Dempster?
  5. Isn't Pedroia plus 4? I think we have space for Ell's
  6. Are you talking about Bush ... he went to Yale. Obama was a drug user too!
  7. How are we tight on the cap this year ... I do not understand really. Minus Hanrahan - 7M Minus Bailey - 4M Minus Dempster - 13M Minus Drew - 10M Total -34M Ellsbury 2013 Salary = 9M 18M- 9M = + 9M Salty, Ross, & Napoli = 20M Help me here ... what am I missing?
  8. Ellsbury can transition to left in years 4-6 especially if JBJ develops. With Ellsbury we have a legit chance to be contenders for the next 3 years. JBJ can also give Ellsbury some nights off. Ellsbury can still lead off and snag 25+ bases for the next 6 years. You keep talking about Ellsbury's athleticism ... I have no idea what you are talking about. He is an athlete.
  9. Damon was making 13M per and that contract began 8 years prior to the 2014 season. 13M in 2006 is probably closer to 20M in today's baseball dollars. Damon averaged 23 SB's over his 4 years in NY. Furthermore a 6 year contract for Ellsbury is similar to the 4 year contract with Damon. Damon began his contract with NY at age 32. Ellsbury will begin the 2014 at age 30. So I have to disagree about the financial risk that you speak of.
  10. I understand completely what you meant UN ... If we can sign Ellsbury for 6/100 let's get it done today! Especially if the option is Beltran or Ellsbury.
  11. I have to disagree ... there is no way that Ellsbury is singing a 3 year deal at age 30. Beltran is 37 years old. I am making this argument under the assumption that the Sox want to stay under the luxury cap. I think going out the next three years is enough for forecasting. Will 16.6M be overpaying for Ellsbury at age 33 vs. 15M for Beltran at 37? Based your your contract assumptions UN ... who would you prefer to sign ... Ellsbury or Beltran?
  12. If Ellsbury signs for 6/100 = 16.666M per. Beltran would be 15M per. Based on your assumptions Ellsbury is only costing 1.666M more per. We were not on the same page ... I was talking per year and you were talking total contract. Pretty hard to compare a 3 year contract against a 6 year contract. For the 3 years of Beltran it will cost the Sox only 4.8M more to have Ellsbury for the first 3 years.
  13. Ruiz staying with Philly on a 3 /26M deal. Crazy. This helps the Sox as Ruiz > Salty so we can conceivably sign Salty 3 / 21? Comments?
  14. Great ... Hudson made the right decision.
  15. I know that baseball is business but in the post season we had Gomes playing because it was said that he lit a spark with the team or some nonsense along these lines. Ellsbury helped deliver 2 championships over the past 6 seasons. Should not management consider that Ellsbury brings the same something to the team that Gomes brings and then some. Just saying. There are a lot of superstitions in baseball and not signing Ellsbury over a couple of million per seems like a mistake. That being said I really like JBJ and if JBJ were not with the Sox Dojji would be drooling over him.
  16. Beltran earned 26/2 for his last contract. Will he get the same I do not know. You mentioned Ellsbury signing for 6 years at an average of 18 per. 13+5 = 18. So 2 years of Beltran would offset 2 years of Ellsbury + 5m per year. Ellsbury is a premier lead off player. Which would you prefer to have UN? Anyway UN ... what kind of deal do you think Beltran will sign ... he is connected to a lot of teams. I think he will get a similar 26/2 deal that he just came off.
  17. If the Sox sign Beltran they might as well just sign Ellsbury instead for 3-5m more. I cannot picture Beltran playing right or center at Fenway.
  18. I am constantly telling my 4 y.o. son to tell the truth ... I might be giving the lad bad advise and perhaps being politically incorrect at the same time.
  19. what do you have in mind?
  20. Damon worked out well for them I would imagine that Ells will also.
  21. He will mash 25 if he signs with the Shanks.
  22. I agree ... and the FO would love to have him back but at the right price. An outfield of JBJ, Jacoby & Victorino would be insane ... easily the best defensive outfield in MLB. Add 6-8M to Jacoby's contract (what did he earn in 2013) subtract 5 million by dealing Gomes, subtract 14M by dealing Dempster ... etc. I agree with most of you that the thing with Ellsbury is that it is all about the years. If he can be happy with a 5 year contract to stay in Boston. Although I do not see Jacoby declining as some do, eventually you can move JBJ to Center while Ellsbury will still steal bases playing in left. Ellsbury really should retire in a Sox uni. Word is however that Texas is looking long and hard at Jacoby. IMO ... some team is going to give him a 6-7 year deal that will be hard for Boston to match. And remember this folks ... you heard it time and again from me ... Ells will mash 20+ HR's next season. And you can all remind me if I am wrong.
  23. Hassan's name has not been brought up but he is another of the promising players on the farm. He also attended Duke so it makes sense that he has an intelligent approach to hitting.
  24. True that! Makes all proven MLB superstars like Stanton all the more enticing.
  25. It's nice to dream.
